A little out of time, but I don't mind. Anyway, Donovan is great. I saw him at Madison Square Garden in 1969. He played on a stage covered in white flowers. Of course.

That must have been great, Myron

Six years ago, by pure chance, I crossed paths with Donovan at Boston's Logan Airport. There he was, unrecognized by everyone except me. In total surprise I called out his name, "Donovan Leitch!" and he extended his hand to me, a total stranger. We shook, and had a truly wonderful exchange. Donovan assured me he was planning a Boston concert appearance, and two years later I was in the front row.
Avatar 6:52pm

Wonderful, Doug. Was Donovan still flying Translove Airways?

I must ask ask...who is the arranger on these songs.. my guess is Mickie Most or Donovan himself...I'm probably wrong though...
Avatar 6:57pm
cometothesunshine:

sw2442 - no, neither arranged the records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm
Beantown Doug:

Jenny Boyd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm
Kim Reynolds:

Enjoying the Sunshine!
Avatar 6:58pm
cometothesunshine:

Usually I take pains to mention the arrangers, but they seldom gave credit. It is possible John Paul Johns helped on some, but I believe there were many uncredited people who scored these records.
Avatar 6:58pm
cometothesunshine:

Thanks, Kim!
Avatar 7:00pm

Seems kind of the perfect Sunshine show.
  7:00pm
MH:

Who was Mad John?
Avatar 7:01pm

Yeah...John Paul Jones would be probably bebe it....he did a lotta arranging for many artists and groups he appeared on...
Avatar 7:01pm
johnyoung1234:

There is a Facebook group 'Real Autograph Collector's Club' that someone associated with Donovan is aware of. Donovan has a special offer for members this month for any RACC member that buys a signed item from him through his website. He will sign and personalize LPs, CDs, etc. from the site. A friend of mine just received a really nice item directly from him in Ireland from the site. He even signed the customs form!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm
Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@7:05 cometothesunshine: what a pity! Sometimes the boots can surpass official releases (Syd-era Floyd BBC stuff comes to mind here) but would be nicer to give the artist some financial reward as well, no matter how little it is nowadays.

"Celeste" is one of my all-time favorites. It's a major "comfort zone" track for me.

Wear your love like lemons...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Yes he is very underrated as a songwriter, but he seems to have been very underrated as a serious artist in general back in the 60s. He was dismissed - at least to an extent - as a Dylan for teenyboppers; that definition is pretty far from his actual work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
Beantown Doug:

For me, when things aren't going well, and life gets especially tough, there is "Celeste."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
PaulRobeson1920:

Underrated is one way to view it : ) ... I would argue the culture had been repressed by Nixon era Public Policy's.... Brilliant music wow

Lord of the Reedy River is another favorite...I'm guessing on Mary Hopkin's version on Postcard, Donovan and maybe Paul are also on it...do you know Andrew?
Avatar 7:39pm
cometothesunshine:

Donovan appears briefly in the film If It's Tuesday...performing this song.
Avatar 7:41pm

sw2442 - that would make sense, given the bootleg of Donovan and McCartney from that period.

Having met Donovan briefly, in an impromptu way, I can confirm his absolute sincerity. The eternal Hippie, he was insistent on wanting to know everything he could find out about me.

This natural and super sincere quality is what makes his music beautiful and timeless.

Donovan 19 years old in that interview! Same as the average age of the American Solider in Vietnam. 19 years old
