On We Go

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

As you've probably heard, Frederick Nathaniel "Toots" Hibbert, O.J., a great and influential artist who, among many other things, helped inspire some of us of a certain age to explore music beyond our own borders, has left us. But of course the music lives on...

Speaking of which: WFMU's Transpacific Sound Paradise joins in celebrating Global Music Month this September! Global Music Month is a collaborative online mega-festival featuring content from nineteen festivals and event producers in the US and Canada, most of whom normally present in-person festivals and concerts in the summer and autumn months. Because that's not possible this year they've teamed up to cross-promote online events all this month under the Global Music Month banner.

The full daily schedule for Global Music Month is here.

Here's a highlight from this past week's Global Music Month offerings:
SLAVIC MUSIC MEET: From the URGNT vaults:
The arts organization URGNT presents beautifully shot performances by (in this order) Fosho, Socalled, Alyona Alyona, Moskitto Bar, and Marina Krut - artists who might normally have performed at festivals like Sunfest in London, Ontario (which I had a great time attending last summer) or the Ashkenaz Festival or Small World Music Festival in Toronto:

SLAVIC MUSIC MEET: From the URGNT vaults from URGNT TRNTO LIVE on Vimeo.

You can find out more and watch lots and lots of great live-streamed and archival performances from the nineteen Global Music Month festivals and presenters listed below, all September, at:

Yeah, just choking a little, eyes burning more some days than others. Keeping an eye on the Bobcat fire in the San Gabriels, it's edging closer to the evacuation Zone for Franco's sister and husband.

Wow, this track "Umcolo" must be where Bow Wow Wow was inspired for, "See Jungle...Go Ape Crazy"
Avatar 7:40pm

Correct lyrics from Bow Wow Wow: Sir Jungle, Sir Jungle
Go join your gang, yeah
See your lover going crazy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm
Rob W:

African music did have more influence on rock than in the US at that time, I would say - but there's actually a more specific source for Bow Wow Wow (and Adam and the Ants etc). Google "Burundi Beat" or check this article: medium.com...
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 7:59pm
Bas NL:

Interesting article Rob! I used to be quite an Adam and the Ants fan because of their 'different' sound, but never knew where they got it..
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:01pm
chresti:

Thank you for the music, getting a little dance workout .
Avatar 8:01pm
winofigments:

Excellent article. Yes of course the Burundi Beat. Just noting that the melody of Umcolo is pretty much the same on the Bow Wow Wow tune and it looks like they took all the credit for the songwriting.

Hi, Rob and folks. There is also Mike Sin's show on Sundays 12-1PM on the Rock 'n' Soul stream. It's called Ranking Full Stop and it's an hour of ska.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm
Handy Haversack:

All this new excellent Sunday programming is the rock I crash against. Ken. We went to gaming every Sunday once the pandemic hit, and so I miss Suzy, Mike, and (until next week) Billy Jam. I'd like to pretend I'd get to it in the archives, but when?
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:29pm

Hi Ken, a recent fire WAS caused by fireworks, you had asked yesterday, out by Yucaipa.

@chresti, was that the gender-reveal fiasco?
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:38pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Good gravy, where do people get their common sense from? Over 100°, no rain in months and things are already on fire and they shoot off fireworks in the woods? That's crazy.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:38pm
chresti:

Michael, yes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm
Handy Haversack:

Seriously, Ken. That's why I confine my gender-reveal celebrating to shooting flare guns at propane tanks. Moderation, you know?
