I hadn't listened to Ys for several years, but I started thinking of this track and sat and listened to it again the other night. There are some really beautiful lyrics in it, like the whole section about the bird hitting the window. And those Van Dyke Parks strings, wow.

Been spending *all* this time (not counting making breakfast for daughter) combing through old issues of LA Times to establish that I did in fact see John Bilezikjian in a club in Studio City area. Could have been another oud player, e.g., from nearby Glendale, which boasts a large Armenian population. Anyway, despite coming up empty-handed I've been fascinated with the old -- '70s, '80s -- classified ads that allowed one to scan most of a week's worth of activities at venues ranging all over the southland. Just the variety of shows on any given night is astonishing: Dolly Parton & Porter Wagoner, Vinnie Golia & Wayne Peet, the LA Phil, local choirs, Chicago w/ Fanny opening... We've lost that bird's eye view with the web, which has atomized the information into discrete, easily manipulated units of data.
