Avatar 🎸 9:24am
YETI BOB:

@D(iL): Similar - had a few friends over for an outdoor barbecue - lamb skewers with fresh eggplant & cherry tomatoes from the garden, which were really good. And then went out with my wife (who is a very good sport!) for a kayak trip on the Chicago river yesterday - still exploring and trying to find the best spots to launch a boat. Got caught in the rain, and had to paddle through an "aeration station" which was like really turbulent and wild rapids. Urban kayaking is an adventure!

Avatar 🎸 9:33am
YETI BOB:

Oh, it was terrifying and I'd rather not repeat the experience! We didn't know about it in advance. If I had looked it up I would have read: "The Devon aeration station presents a hazard. When operating, three blowers force air into injectors on both sides of the channel. Do not paddle in the aerated water. It reduces the buoyancy of both boats and people and the currents can result in conditions equal to Class 3 whitewater. Paddlers are advised to turn around and head back the way they came before reaching this station." But we (foolishly) did it anyway, and survived. I had to paddle with all my strength to fight the machines.

Curious, what did the guys in the English Beat (The Beat) think of this rendition? Crowd sourcing here, instead of der Google.
Also, hello all.
  10:07am
Rick A.:

I never understood the mania over Purple Rain in the summer of 1984. I know Prince is talented singer, songwriter, guitarist producer. However, the film is not really that interesting. I guess it has an intriguing look, dark palette. However, as he proved with Under the Cherry Moon, Prince is not a great actor. There is always Pennies from Heaven as a polarizing 80s musical.
Avatar 10:09am
Joe McG:

@ReallyLisa: I wonder if anyone ever asked Dave Wakeling that question? I'd be curious myself/ @TDK60: I was amazed by how boring PT's book was considering how interesting he is.

I should revisit this live Townshend LP. Back in the '80s, when I was smart as hell and knew it all, I could not stand the version of "Barefootin'"
Avatar 🎸 10:09am
YETI BOB:

@ReallyLisa: There's a nice story on the Wikipedia article about the song. Basically, Pete Townshend called up Dave Wakeling to ask him how to play the song - it's in an unusual tuning
  10:09am
Rick A.:

Really Lisa, I saw the English Beat a few years ago at the Highline Ballroom, partly at Joe's recommendation. Dave Wakeling talked up the Townshend version, saying how much he appreciated his version.
Avatar 10:09am
sphere:

I think Purple Rain was more an act of self-mythmaking than actual fiction, and since Prince obviously thought he was godlike, that vibe really blew people away.
Avatar 🎸 10:10am
YETI BOB:

quoting from Wikipedia:

"I got a phone call at 11 in the morning, and somebody gave me the phone and said, “It’s Pete Townshend for you.” And I said, “Of course it is, he phones about this time every Saturday doesn’t he?” [Laughs.] I thought it was somebody making a joke. I picked up very sarcastically, 'Oh, hello Pete.' And he said, 'Oh, hello Dave, this is Peter Townshend here and I’m sitting with David Gilmour, and we’re trying to work out your song 'Save It For Later,' but we can’t work out the tuning.' They presumed it was DADGAD as well, and couldn’t make it work, and so I had to explain that I’d made a mistake and it was not DADGAD, it was DADAAD. And he laughed and said, 'Oh, thank heavens for that! We've been breaking our fingers trying to get our hands around these chords.'"

I'ma be blunt: Prince is/was the most broadly Talented artist I can think of as both Musician & Performer... but I never felt I needed anything by him. I feel like MTV ruined him. He was caught up in his identity crises & I wish he'd just been an Artist & gone deep. ...So how arrogant is that ??
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:11am

The only rock-star autobio a bit more boring than that one was Clapton's. What these guys think it very interesting about themselves varies widely from what I think makes them interesting.

The Blues Brothers is probably my favorite 80s musical. I was only 14 and the film taught me who John Lee Hooker and Elmore James are among others. Given my love of Robert Altman's work, I really like Popeye, another polarizing musical. It has an awkward pace, sometimes too frenetic and other times borderline catatonic though Altman created perhaps the most authentically animated world with live action actors.

I'm catching up on the show today and really enjoyed it! Hearing Cancion Mixteca was a real treat. I remember watching Paris, Texas some time in the eighties and I think that was my introduction to Ry Cooder. Good to hear this again!
