Favoriting July 26, 2020: Begin the Brackeen
We luxuriate, immerse ourselves and otherwise gorge, on the music of Joanne Brackeen, on this, her 82nd birthday. Her super-powerful, inventive voice on piano rings out on her own leader-projects, and her collaborations with Art Blakey, Stan Getz, Joe Henderson, Eddie Gomez, and dozens more - all add up to a packed program at The Stork Club that’s headed for some overtime.

Comment at Berkeleyside from Merrilee Trost: "I was publicist for Concord Records when we first started Concord's historic run there. Dick Whittington, Joan Kenston and I tried to talk Carl Jefferson into recording, but he was resistant. Joanne Brackeen called Jefferson the day of her performance there and he relented. Sent Phil Edwards out with his truckful of recording equipment and the rest is history."

Oh, she gets compared to McCoy all the time, RevRabb. Totally fair - especially on these 70's records. But she just kept on developing and finding great people to collab with.

Weasel Walter at the PO! Reminds me of seeing Judith Butler at the supermarket. I ran into Scott Amendola on the BART platform in SF a few months ago, and I *did* go up to him and say, "Hey, Mr. Amendola? Big fan." We chatted all the way back on the ride to the East Bay.

To the swank clientele assembled tonight: this bounty of Joanne shall o'erflow the banks of a three hour Drummer Stream show. We are going WAY the hell over tonight/today. There's another whole set behind this one, and it's a doozy, as the ancient Romans would say. I hope you can dally the dappled, drowsy day away with ol' Storkypants.

I had listened earlier that day, or maybe a day or two prior, to a 1999 Paul Plimley Trio CD on which Amendola had drummed (Lisle Ellis on bass). I had to mention as much to him, at which point he tried to recollect the circumstances of its recording more than 20 years prior.

The cover of this album and of another of Brackeen's, Keyed In, would lead one to believe it were on the CTI label. Same tightly framed close-up photograph. And lo, the designer for Tappan Zee/Columbia was Paula Scher, who designed for CTI.

bad tambourine playing will ruin any song; excellent tambourine playing can lift a good song to be a great song. often more important than the drums as far as keeping the track together.

Indeed, they are, doctorjazz. I'm now at the point where when I see one, I have to think hard about whether or not I already have it. Occurs to me I should inventory them and add them to a t-i-n-y piece of paper I keep in my wallet on which I list in m-i-c-r-o-s-c-o-p-i-c type 1) Hyperion Schubert lieder series issues I need; 2) Naxos Haydn string quartet series issues I have; and 3) Albion Records Vaughan Williams issues I have.

Haven't even said the obvious that here's a female pianist whose not just a stylist or also a singer (none of whom I can think of who aren't essential btw) - but who absolutely rips both technically & energy-wise - & had awesome range as well. I hope that isn't patronizing ' I intend the opposite like - so there! Of course there are other female pianist who are significant - so I shouldn't overstate it....just think she kicks total ass.
