My daughter lifted up her head and asked, what are you listening to?! Time to have "that talk." You know, when you try to gently explain sampling and turntablism to your child.
Avatar 6:06pm
Mr Fab:

The Bran Flakes featuring our own Otis Fodder, host of Tuesday's extravaganza "Friendly Persuasion."

I blasted Ween in the car when I took my daughters to day-care. Now they can cope with Nick the Bard, so I claim success.

"This is Ovenguard Vol. 1" has ZERO google search results. DAMN>

I'm thinking of getting one of those bulletproof, Califone-style educational record players for our grandson, who's drawn like a magnet to both my and my son's turntable setups. Just let him loose with a bunch of junk records.

It was actually my wife's suggestion, which kind of blew my mind.

I think Discogs has some of the Ovenguard releases...

I'm a sucker for band with 'Bakersfield' in it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm

This is great, Don-O! Such a great label. I believe they put out Bran Flakes' first album.
Avatar 6:15pm
Mr Fab:

By gum, you're right, Don-O. Discogs does indeed have some copies available. Right on! I just have the Bran Flakes albums.
Avatar 6:16pm
Mr Fab:

Li'l Fab just up and left to another room. We're just too hip for the room.
Avatar 6:17pm

I sadly missed out on the other Samplers....so I'm not THAT "hip" after all.
Avatar 6:18pm
Don-O:

Warning, I might miss a track cue or two....or three as these tracks kinda bleed into each other.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm

This is pretty cool. Sadly, Known In Bakersfield is non-existent outside of a couple of Ovenguard comps.
Avatar 6:21pm

The liner note mentioned a future album, but......

Tomorrow’s moms is a good band name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm

There's a difficult show concept for completist/anal retentive types: A show composed only of bands who only put a few tracks out on label compilations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm

Or is that the song
Avatar 6:22pm

'song'?
Avatar 6:22pm

hey, i get it: "Ovenguard," like "avant garde." I'm quick like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm

It's the song name but you're right. Might've been a complete career game-changer for 'em.

Oh wow. I never would of gotten that, Fab. That's hilarious!

After all these decades, I got that, too.

Reminds me of a friend who interviewed Rose Maddox and asked her if she's gotten to put out any CDs and she said "CDs? Everything I DO is SEEDY!"

This is what it sounds like when you huff scotch garde
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm
Rich in Washington:

Wasn't there a Scotch Guard label too?
Avatar 6:26pm
Don-O:

Oh, as this was burned on a CD-R this is the second OG release that I had to replace as the original disc turned into tissue paper.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm

Aren’t cdrs wonderful?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm
solo mon:

Every household item had a record label named after it in the late 90s
Avatar 6:29pm
Don-O:

I just got a stack of them at the local thrift store......I hope they last long.....
Avatar 6:29pm
Mr Fab:

Loading tracks into the Sheena stream reminded me of the, shall we say, "ephemeral" nature of CD-Rs. Digitize 'em now, kiddies, before they're gone.
Avatar 6:29pm
Don-O:

ELO sample!! Yup, that's Otis indeed!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm
Rich in Washington:

I have hundreds of burnt CDRs in file drawers. Hopefully they'll last a bit but my CD decks are getting finicky in their old age and it's like a game of Russian roulette whether they'll suddenly stop playing during a set.
Avatar 6:30pm
Don-O:

I'm afraid you're right, FAB!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm
Rich in Washington:

I've been using these supposedly archival stable CDRs for the last decade or so but so many of these things I just burned them to a disc and possibly flushed the files. No telling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm
Rich in Washington:

Now i'm hearing 'Tomorrow's Moms' sung to the tune of Elvis Costello's This Year's Girl.
Avatar 6:32pm
Don-O:

I'm on the hunt for archive discs....if I can afford it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm
Rich in Washington:

I have some Shimmy Disc releases that have CD rot so bad you can see chunks coming off. And these are commercially produced CDs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm
Rich in Washington:

I'm wetting in the wings. Sorry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm
Rich in Washington:

I've been buying huge cakeboxes of JVC Taiyo Yuden CDRs, silver.
They're so popular that they are bootlegged! If you get the real ones, they come with a certificate of authenticity.
Avatar 6:36pm
Don-O:

Wow, that's intense for CDRs!!
Avatar 6:36pm
Don-O:

I assume they are NOT cheap!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm
Rich in Washington:

yeah, counterfeit blank CDs. Pretty crazy. They seem to work pretty good. I don't think I've ever had one just suddenly rot but who knows?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm
Rich in Washington:

something like $40 per 100. A bit steep, but at least you're not getting something like Memorex discs, which have an abysmal fail rate, probably as archival as warm cheese.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm
Rich in Washington:

I love CDs. I am going to rule the inevitable CD revival.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm
Photocopy Cha Cha:

I want the cd-r revival!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm
Rich in Washington:

hi Photocopy Cha Cha!
Avatar 6:40pm
Don-O:

I should Google that JVC set after the show.....
Avatar 6:41pm
Mr Fab:

Ok! We got the band name AND album title now:

Tomorrow’s Moms - "As Archival as Warm Cheese"
Avatar 6:41pm
Don-O:

Sounds cheezy!
Avatar 6:42pm
Don-O:

Hey, Cha-Cha!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm
StringOFperils:

Interesting. True re. MEMOREX cdRs...the few I made mixes on 15 years ago are now magnetically unstable...they're failing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm
Photocopy Cha Cha:

Ahoy Rich, Don-O, Mr. Fab and other cd-r's! Dunno if I am lucky or not but my cd-r's are old, many of them 20 years or even more and stiull working. Many a hard drive I have lost into the digital nothingness on the other hand, some even before the two year EU warranty was over.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:42pm
Aitch:

I've had high-end CD players be super finicky about old disks, so bought a really shit el-cheapo player that would play just about anything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm
StringOFperils:

Or optically I should say...they're falling apart
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm
Rich in Washington:

I've just found that pretty much anything marketed by Memorex has been utterly worthless crap. Their cassettes were a joke, especially the premium metal ones. Horrible, muddy sound and totally unstable.
Avatar 6:44pm
Don-O:

Hey, String O' Perils!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm
StringOFperils:

Hello....I never say hello.....bad manners
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm
Rich in Washington:

I should really rethink my reliance on CDs and CDRs, though. My CD decks are rather ancient radio station type CD players and getting a bit finicky, but otherwise reliable. (knocks on simulated woodgrain).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm
Photocopy Cha Cha:

I have no personal experience with memorex, but VERBATIM! Oh man, ironic name that one. Two years ago I bought them (the only brand that was available here in the sticks at the time), even by trying different pc's/burners only 10% could be burned AND played. And a few plays later, gone.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:46pm
Aitch:

So memos-wrecked. Failure implicit in the name perhaps.
Avatar 6:47pm
Don-O:

BTW, I'm using the sound wave patterns on my Audocity to figure out each track now. Yup, it's getting THAT unruly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm
Rich in Washington:

Oh yeah. Verbatim! Also any CDR branded by an office supply company.
Avatar 6:48pm
Mr Fab:

ha Aitch, yeah - "Memo-wrecks."
Avatar 6:50pm
Don-O:

Verbatim seems to have stable discs.
Avatar 6:51pm
Mr Fab:

Things named after office supply companies? Realistic. And they wonder why Radio Shack went out of business.
Tho there was an early sample/sound collage project named after it. I think I had a cd by Realistic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm
Rich in Washington:

There used to be this cheesy souvenir shop on the Oregon coast known for its stupid cedar gifts, hilarious out-of-date novelty T-shirts and huge file boxes of stupid generic bumperstickers with sayings that went out like 25 years ago. I bought almost all of their 'Are You Live Or Are You Memorex?' stickers and was giving them out to people for many years. I gave a bunch to Negativland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm
Rich in Washington:

Yeah, Realistic is great! I think Jon Nelson gave me some of their CDs fairly recently!
Avatar 6:52pm
Don-O:

Anything about Radio Shack!? Be still my nostalgic bleeding heart.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm
Photocopy Cha Cha:

@6:50 Don-O: in my personal experience, Verbatim discs are stable if you expect them not to work.
Is it live or is it memorex does apparently have its alternative meaning in cd-r land. I should start collecting old cd-r releases on memorex (in reality:NO.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm
StringOFperils:

Nice! I used to wear the bumper sticker that came with 'Is There Any Escape From Noise?' on the back of the jacket I wore when riding my bicycle. The industrial black on yellow sticker that said CAR BOMB.
Avatar 6:56pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm
Rich in Washington:

Oh, thanks Don-O! You beat me to it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm
StringOFperils:

Well, this stuff stands up a lot better than a lot of other things that came to be in the 1990s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm
Photocopy Cha Cha:

Of cheap supermarket cd-r brands Tesco was surprisingly good, Throbbing Gristle was perhaps ahead of their time with their 'tune' "Tesco Disco".
Avatar 6:59pm
Don-O:

My thanks to ALL for showing up and the stomach for this crap!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm
StringOFperils:

Thanks for the hour of good crap Don-O!
Avatar 7:00pm
Mr Fab:

@StringOFperils: Noise ages well. Unlike some cd-rs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm

I did not get food sickness of this so my stomach handled this 'crap' well, thanks Don-O!
