The Williamsburg Bridge, where I did a fantastic faceplant at the base of the bridge, when I hit a rumble strip and the front wheel of my bicycle came off. Helmet saved my life (it shattered). My left side of my face got scraped off, my molars were shattered to the gumline, and I woke up in an ambulance. I told the EMTs I didn't have insurance, they did a diagnostic. Although shaken, my brain was shaken up, it seemed fine, so, I signed a waver, got out of the ambulance, and went on my way. Couldn't get my bike together (still dazed), luckily a British chap noticed I needed help, and put the wheel back on for me. Took the subway home, horrifying image for all involved, and the next week I had the NYU dental school recontruct my mouth. Fun times.

Oh, I have that Frith track (an excerpt), on a comp I randomly foundd . and, hallos!

@Naila: It still cost me $14k to recontruct my mouth even w/ dental surgeon students (the Pakistani lad did a good job over the 6 surgeries). The fact I had to have the presenced of mind to refuse an ambulance trip, to stay out of crippling debt for the rest of my life, shows that 'murica is a third-world country.

Dental isn't covered by public health insurance in Canada either. I have a broken molar right now, and zero cash. On the upside though, the rest of our health system did keep me alive 18 months ago when a biopsy came in positive for cancer in my throat. The radiation and chemo therapy would have been unavailable to a person like me south of the border, and I wouldn't be here now, boring you with my tangential story....and that's why I have no cash to fix this tooth. And they live happily ever after, or, statistically, for a good five years or so. The end. (Almost?)

My mom died a week ago Saturday at 93, following hip surgery after a fall. The emergency surgery will likely be covered, even though the hospital is out of network for her Medicare Advantage plan. (Her hospital bill is over $100k.) But a second and subsequent follow-up appointments were not covered, and even though I said she would pay out of pocket, the doctors ultimately declined to see her. I find that unconscionable, made maddeningly worse by the fact that one clinic at the hospital kept calling to confirm an appointment that another clinic was canceling. Meanwhile, her PCP worked hard to keep me apprised of developments, sometimes emailing or calling me two or three times a day. Our system boils down to the integrity of the individual doctor. That's what's so heartwarming about capitalism.

it pretty much means the scene, or the place to be, but I'm not a native speaker, and most comes from cinema and music and watching deutsche welle. My spanish however, is much much better, no matter what my partner tells me...

ngh: the grammar is a mixed bag - it's so much more uniform and comprehensible - as is almost any other language than English. The cases and prepositions are a bear. The verbs are hard, too - and three genders. It takes a while but it's always been a pleasure for me to learn. Yep, I'm wacked.

Had to run errands. Thank you again, all, coelacanth∅, spodiodi. While in the car I tuned to Philosophy Talk, where today's discussion is about ethics in the time of Covid-19, including the competing demands of having elderly family in isolation. Boy, don't I know that! Fortunately, my mom was at a facility on near-total lockdown with no cases. Only after she was admitted to hospice care at the facility was I able to visit her. I was with her when she passed. It was peaceful.

Gonna make a big fat lasagna today for my daughter.

Just saw your remark about your dad, spodiodi. I lost mine ten years ago, and I continue to deal with inasmuch as I think about him, wish he'd been around when my daughter was born...that sort of "dealing with." But I suspect that on top of that you're dealing with all the stuff that a death in the family generates until things settle down. Family stuff, legal stuff, financial stuff, what the hell to do with the furniture, the books, etc.

Dean:

I can't fathom the difficulty of having to do this stuff from 3000 miles away. I lived 400 from my mom until I moved here up near us in January last year. Prior to that I flew down every two to three months to keep an eye on her. Up here she lived three blocks from our house. Ironically, with the lockdown, that barely mattered until hospice status.

Complications, doctorjazz, well, yes. Put it this way: when she was in Southern California my younger sibling who lived half a dozen miles away from her refused to have anything to do with her.

Dean. My sister and I always lived a short distance from my mom. And, the main conversion between my sister and I, pretty much daily, would be along the lines, "you know what mom said/did,?!?! With one of up comforting the other.

Dean:

In fairness to my brother, he lived near my parents for about a decade after I'd removed to N. Cal. Hence he had the more frequent in-your-face altercations with them than I did. I wasn't out of the picture by any stretch, but it was probably easier for me to turn it off.
