hello mariano, ngh. sem gramophone is a korean label which releases a bizarre mix of korean music and bands like abba, metallica, and eddie rabbit

Really love it. Weird with the translation, it just transcribes it phonetically to "Sangju Arirang (Menarise)". Sounds like they're saying "Arirang" maybe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26am
mariano:

Ah, interesting: "“Arirang” is a Korean folk song, sometimes considered the. unofficial national anthem of Korea. Arirang is an ancient native Korean word with no direct modern meaning. But it is the name of a Korean mountain pass."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35am

True, rich. Good catch.
  12:38am
JakeGould:

@rich: Doing okay all things considered. Just took a walk around my neighborhood at night and the scene is very old school NYC. Other than Middle Eastern guys hanging out on my corner, I spotted two nodders and two wobble drunk guys walking around.

More than a few abandoned free food boxes with stuff I guess nobody wanted but were still sealed, and also saw pretty much every spa and salon in my neighborhood closed but emptied inside; business gave up the ghost. And a COVID-19 testing place popped up. And the scene around the local police precinct were cops seemingly ready for a riot but nobody there.

Anyway kind of positive aspect of not being able to find details on SEM Gramaphone and stuff online is it proves how Western most media is based and how deep and rich a world of discovery there is out there.
  12:41am
JakeGould:

There are lots of SEM Gramaphone vintage phono needle tins out there nowadays. But no details on their history. Assume they dealt with record player sales in Korea and then went into publishing media as well.

hi ParUbi, chresti, rw, coel, mariano, Jake
hey Jake, what's a "nodder"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45am
mariano:

A nodder's a yes-man, a sycophant, a toadie. Streets are full of them. Ok but seriously it means people nodding out on heroin.
  12:46am
JakeGould:

@spodiodi: Heroin nodder. To be fair, this part of Brooklyn still has an opiate problem so I have seen nodders in the past. But more earlier in the evening and when places like bars and such were open.

Now the shops are closed and to see nodders near closed roll gates with nowhere else to go is bleaker.

rich, this sounds a lot like the beginning of Forbidden Zone (of which, i found just found a 2012 playlist from when you had john schnall, (Jawsy Shore was the first I heard of him, on your show last week(!)), taking on the forbidden zone). i started to play it, then favorited it, then you began playing this... never occurred to me before that the mystic knights may have borrowed it from Black Sabbath. Black Sabbath's greatest hits was the first store-bought cassette i owned (a gift from my best friend's stoner uncle, when he saw how excited i was about my new boom box).

@mariano: Ha! I genuinely don’t know that sketch because Monty Pythion isn’t my thing. But I will tell you something funny that is very similar.

I used to sell or give away old furniture on Craigslist back when it was more viable; like 7-8 years ago. And lots of times — because of work — I would post stuff near the end of the week; like Thursday or Friday.

So sometimes I would get this weird flood of requests to buy or check out the furniture in the middle of the night. I would respond in the morning and uniformly never hear back. All the response were like “Can pick up now…” but like 1:30am for an offing chair and always from men.

Never found out why this pattern existed, but I have a funny feeling that in some way listing for “furniture” was some kind of weird slang to some for hookups? Why else would I get such a consistent pile of desperate responses for offing furniture in the middle of the night like that.
