Irene Trudel:

Yes and no, @Doug. There's something satisfying about manipulating the physical tape. What I don't miss is cutting a lot of tape and dropping the one piece you really need by accident into the pile. These days I actually prefer digital editing and its many levels of un-do when you make a mistake. Fun fact-- when WNYC moved operations to its current (all-digital) facility, John Schaefer was the last person to give up physical tape editing, and only under heavy protest.

I'd bee interested in a reel to reel myself, though I think my wife would divorce me ("you're going to start collecting those things too!?!?). An old friend had 1 in a nice audio system, and the sound was quite nice (though the hiss seemed even worse than vinyl noise)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:54am
Irene Trudel:

@TDK60, nope! I have lots of things on reel, including a couple of shows dating back to shows I did on my high school radio station. I also have a few DAT tape machines, only one of which still works. But maybe it's time for me to start that big archiving project I've always wanted to do.

@mBomb...I used to have a big AKAI machine as well, sold it, post-art school, out of poverty-driven necessity, which I still regret. The bottom end of the audio spectrum that thing could produce at 15 i.p.s. was phenomenal. I remember taping a Bobby Blue Bland CD onto that, and it sounded like a studio master tape.

@Irene, I know about the plan to drop John Schaffer, I'm a member, and we were emailed about the plan. I get the sense the new manager got much flack and negative feedback about it, and that had to backtrack on canceling (I was one, probably of many, who sent an email threatening to cancel my membership over it. Hi Doug. Freddie - what a monster. Miles actually had props for him. "Night of the Cookers" is a monument. (From a one time trumpeter in search of the lost embouchure.)

The trumpeter here is Ray Copeland. (Brooklyn boyhood friend of Randy Weston.) I'd bet anything a clear through line can be drawn from Rex Stewart to Ray Copeland.
