Just a reminder that in NY State, face coverings are still required out in public. I see maybe 1 in 10 or so not wearing them. The regulations are not just to protect the non-wearer, but those around them. Continuing to take precautions will actually help facilitate the reopening that we all look forward to, whenever it comes.

ottovonbqe:

Ok, so here is my story of the week. I am about to start a new (work from home) job and the employer requires a drug screening. They sent me the order and I went down to the local Quest laboratory. I live in western massachusetts but in a dilapidated city that isn't exactly a brain trust. So I drove into town, parked and put on my gear, and climbed the stairs to the third floor of the old building that Quest shares with a bunch of other medical type offices. Dim hallways, ancient HVAC, I start thinking maybe this isn't a great place to be. I open the door to the Quest office and see two guys sitting next to each other, masked but one of them has the mask pulled down, I guess to show that he doesn't care about it really. Then a woman comes in behind me, on crutches, no mask, immediately starts talking loudly about the "bullshit" sign about masks and 6 ft. I sign in and am relieved to find that I can wait outside and be texted. So I go out, cross the street, watch a maskless older man come along, sneeze into his hand, then enter the building. I put on my gloves and go back in when I'm texted, but am told I took to long and they went to the next person. I am starting to have an anxiety issue, and argue with the sole employee of the establishment, who is intaking the crutches lady. Crutches lady tells me to "take it easy buddy" and I can sense some murmurs of agreement from the guys behind me, and generally sense that the three of them have been discussing me and criticizing my decision to wait outside. So I left and came back in the afternoon.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45am
Jeffrey Davison:

ottovonbqe: yes, unfortunately the wearing of masks is now a political statement, one way or the other. This is not British troops being quartered in your home; it's wearing a mask in public during a pandemic, and it's for the general good. I had thought that the common good was a thing. Maybe that's just old-fashioned of me.

Welcome TDK60, Planet Tyler, Falcon, and Cooh John.
Sem and Planet Tyler: as I said, most of Meic Stevens's recordings are in Welsh, as he was part of that whole folk revival which included language as well as music, etc. Outlander is a great record. I also remember Ghost Town, which are recordings from around that time also, and include a couple or so tracks that were on Outlander. Not sure where these tracks fit in exactly with the rest of his output.

Good morning StringOFperils and Earth Walker.
Earth Walker: while I think some governments want to instill fear, and I don't exclude the USA, there are warnings that may inspire fear but those that inspire caution. This is a fearsome virus, terribly contagious, and we're a long way from a virus. This ain't the flu, which wreaks enough havoc. I don't think it's too much to wear a mask. I don't drive through red lights, even at 4am, with no other traffic, and not only because I may not see the cop parked around the corner. It's the right thing to do.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50am

I've been taking time to reach out to people I haven't been in contact with enough. I'd recommend doing that, as so many are shut in by themselves, and lacking physical touch. At least some kind words and love sent in another's direction will be welcome. And for god's sake, don't use that as an excuse to rant about what's going on, if at all possible. Most people are up on the news, or perhaps don't want to be.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51am

Thanks Nulsh. There are many English who are inherently prejudiced against the Scots and don't get it that Nicola Sturgeon is a respected and trusted politician. It's probably jealousy. Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05am
Stanley:

Jeffrey - thank you for the recommendation and the point about ranting. At the beginning, I was pretty good at keeping in touch but, apart from a daily call with my parents, this has dropped off significantly. Partly due to not really having anything to talk about but also, I have to admit, being tired of hearing what a spiffy time friends and family were having in their gardens. Of course, if I had a large house and garden, instead of a small flat in the city, I would be enjoying it just as much. However, I imagine most people, regardless, would have worries and difficulties at this time.

Earth Walker: I hear you about factory farming and raising of livestock. Very destructive in so many ways. Watching Chef's Table has been a good reminder that so many chefs are to thank for helping to revitalize local agriculture and more traditional ways. In many instances, the beneficiaries are upper crust people who can afford to eat in expensive restaurants, but I'm hopeful that these practices will be come more widespread, in the same way that "health food" and yoga were once the province of "hippies", and are now mainstream.

@stanley...It's a mad world, and I am, in my own ways, completely mad within it. Carrying a Panglossian world in my pocket, while the world royally kicks my a**, is a choice, unintelligible to many. I know I will be indifferently eradicated, but some bees will have been content, and the thought of that makes me smile. the best of all possible worlds CAN exist in a back yard, a window box, an allotment...

Morning Kevlicki. Folks, Kev is a farmers' market denizen. His farm is not attending the market now but making specific deliveries. The other day he brought me a big bag of various greens, direct from the farm. Wow, Muchas gracias Kev!

melinda is right. people don't realize how hard it is to garden productively. weeds, pests, birds, soil issues. takes a lot of time and you wonder how we have enough to eat at all.

Stanley: I do love Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. It's been a long time since I saw them live. Used to see them every time they came to town.

I have had good results with beans and peas, not much else. Doing ok with garlic too and hope to be "garlic neutral" in a year or two, i.e., able to grow 52 heads or so a year.

My wife just got back from shopping here in Nice she said around 95% of the people were wearing masks Good idea plus the French government I hear will give tickets for not doing so not such a good idea

I don't know why bandandas haven't caught on more. I think it would solve the problem of tough guys who think the mask is girly. They could come in confederate flag designs, camo, hot rod themes, etc.

Just heard that Jason Isbell has a new one out. Where is my card?

Alpha males are not scared of wearing masks. Fake alpha males are.

@ottovonbqe so true. I always grow some cherry tomatoes, herbs and salad greens but depend on my farmers market for most everything else, including the seedlings.

Granny: most farmers in the US are over 60. Doesn't seem like a good situation at all.
ottovonbqe: I do see a lot of bandanas and that new kind of face covering which is sorta like a bandana but a more complete face wrap thing.
Brian: ha! And yeah, Isbell has a new album. Haven't heard it but I hear it's a good one. (and thank you)
Stanley: no, I hadn't. Thanks!

I will say this for gardening. Farming is crushing work, gardening often feels like diversion. And some things like peas taste so much better super fresh.
