This recording of Christo Redemptor sounds exactly like the session that's on Charlie Musselwhite's 1967 VANGUARD labum 'Stand Back !'. I wonder if Philips licensed it for re-release, under Harvey Mandel's name (he's on the session). Probably.

No kidding, I had Lonnie in my heavy rotation last week--an album called "Cosmic Funk," which, interestingly enough, wasn't terribly funky (but was indeed terrible cosmic). I think he's been largely forgotten, unfortunately.

Best Arkestra show for me was like that here, in Toronto, '82-ish. In a little dive bar under a flophouse hotel near here, that was levelled shortly afterward. John Gilmore pounding The Lightning Drum with those big hooked sticks that seemed made out of walking canes, June and several other dancers dancing all around us with veils, The sequined band marching around, and gradually coalescing on the little stage. Ra, magisterial, surveying it all. Changed my life.

@Dean..ACtually it wasn't at The Edge, but good guess ! Remember Larry's Hideaway? Total scuzz hole. But a great venue, for a time. Saw a really great Nina Hagen Band show there around that time too. So small, the audience was almost on the stage, and vice versa. Great acoustics. Probably should have worn gloves and a mask in there, upon reflection.
