The core of Big Planet Noise was formed when Bob Irwin was just 5 years old. The day he picked up his first 45, the whole thing set to spinning – and records and music have been pretty much all he’s thought about ever since. Avocation eventually became vocation, leading to Sundazed Music and Modern Harmonic, all drawing inspiration from Bob’s legendary collection. But, what good is having so many records if no-one else can hear them with you?

Big Planet Noise is Bob’s way of inviting everyone over to hang out in the music room while he and co-host Gina Bacon flip through the stacks and play great records. And – the BPN chat room is where the action is… they yak about what’s on the turntable, tell stories, backstories, and share what was had for dinner, friends ’n family style. Gina keeps the celestial orbit steady-as-it-goes; making sure the stylus stays in the groove, the stacks don’t teeter and the drinks don’t spill all over the console. NB: Gina can also be heard on Saturday afternoons as the host of Someday Matinee (also on WFMU's Give The Drummer Radio stream), a show filled with live musical performances and artist interviews, direct from Music City.

There’s a reason it’s called Big Planet Noise… the show covers a lot of musical ground; familiar, forgotten, unheralded, unheard… The sonic menu is ever-changing; you’ll hear oddball teens, psychedelic wizards, mod lads, sitar savants, space-cadets, groovy soundtracks, and maybe even some bossa nova, when it feels right.

** Moby Grape proved to the world they were one of America's great bands. While history remembers the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane as being more important, the truth is neither group ever made an album quite this good.** < refering to the Moby Grape from a site I remember ,, I kind of agree when I first heard them

Photocopy, I've told this story before, but it bears repeating: My friend Andy grew up in San Francisco. When he was 11 years old one of his pals lived down stairs from one of the guys in Moby Grape and they could hear the band practice above them while they were drinking chocolate milk staring at the ceiling. First time I told the story I got it mixed up and said the band was downstairs. Recently I talked to him and he corrected me and told me all kinds of other fantastic stories about been a kid in that city, at that time.

going back to Susan Cowsill for a second - I recommend her 2010 album Lighthouse - a masterpiece, written and recorded in the aftermath of Katrina

The French book is massive & detailed. I need to read the Harkleroad.

From Cap'n Beffgeart to Zombies in just a few songs, that's some DJing right there.

Doug P. in Boston:

Hearing Hugh Grundy playing drums last year helped me understand what gave the Zombies their sound beyond Rod Argent's keyboards.

Also, John French wrote extensively in Grow Fins, the Reverent release. But it's a hard to read booklet.

The Harkleroad book was out of print for a while but another run was done in about 2012. I read it after the French book, strangely it didn't stick in my mind as much as the French book. Need to reread it. It's only about 125 pages.

@11:24 WR: I don't remember much about it either, I was reading it the same day there was another attempt at bombing the Landon transport system (two weeks after 7/7, I was living in London thhen) so I guess my mind was elsewhere. I do remember him telling how little they ate and how much was demanded during Trout Mask Replica days. btw, LOVE was supposed to play in London 7.7.2005, of course they did not and the rescheduled date had no Arthur Lee :(
