I just listened to Satan Has Been Paralyzed by David Ingles. Irwin, you have a bizarre personality for even knowing about such a song. I guess I'm part of the bizarro world too now.

Has anyone ever done a live action version of "Satan Has Been Paralyzed" for Hoof and Mouth? I seem to recall the stage at Monty Hall's being wheelchair accessible.

The thing is -- what or when was ever "normal"? In my lifetime, just to name a few: Watergate, the 1970s energy crisis, the Cold War with its Mutually Assured Destruction, the Reagan years, multiple wars in Iraq, Weapons of Mass Destruction, 9/11, Chernobyl, Fukushima, oil spills, hurricanes, climate change, an ocean full of plastic, now this.... seriously, was "normal" just a a couple of weeks in the mid-1990s?

Tuning in a bit late. Saw you played some Miles Davis. Not sure if I've relayed the tale of the time I encountered MIles at a gig in Florida. What a strange set of circumstances that was.

This was back circa '74 or so. I was backing up Dick Douglas (Mike's cousin) at a gig in Kissimee, just down the road from Seaworld. As it happens, Miles and his band were staying at the hotel we were performing in. Unexpectedly, Miles and his entourage wandered into the lounge just toward the end of our final set one evening. At first, he and his band ignored us, but as the liquor began to flow (and who knows what else we were doing back then?) Miles first began to do interpretive movements on the lighted dance floor, yelling out request after request (The Horse,Color My World, Lucretia McEvil, Lemon Tree, etc.) before he motioned for me to hand him my trombone.

Of course, I was happy to oblige, even though Miles is not known for his trombone work. I thought he would call up the rest of his band. Instead, he asked us all to sit as he performed. Naturally. we were all thrilled to be in the presence of the great artist, Miles Davis.

Starting low, with a series of stacatto blatts that frightened the freshwater garr in the bar's large aquarium, to the point where it was bouncing off the glass, Miles then launched into a somewhat recognizable version of Green Dolphin Street. "THis is for my friends at Seaworld," he mumbled, "and I don't mean no damned people." We all laughed nervously as he continued, working the slide as he reached for higher and higher notes, yet falling short as he was, after all, playing a trombone instead of his customary trumpet.

Then to my dismay, he raised my trombone over his head and proceeded to smash it onto the stage. Everyone but me cheered, loving the sheer audacity of it. The showbiz. As for me, I was done for the night and my best 'bone was destroyed, Good thing I had my old Conn in my trunk or I'd have been out a gig, but it's spit valve leaked and it was misery for a few weeks until I could scrape together the dough for a new one.

As for Miles. he winked at me on his way out, but he didn't offer to pay for it. "I dig you, man," he said.

And truthfully, that was payment enough for me.
