My background is just like Darryl's. Prog is kinda like country music. I hate so much of it, except for the stuff that I totally love. If you know what I mean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I just did an air drum solo to ELP and bashed my elbow on the windowsill - that, my friends is dedication ;-)
  4:05pm

Also with Prog it takes a more skilled musician that your usual pop/rock -- Musicianship is another thing I value about it

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm

before they buggered the hell out of the algorithm, I used to have the best ever Prog playlist going on Pandora. Now it plays some of the most gawdawful crap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm

it always gets that and justifiably, but i think some prog deserves to be taken as seriously as classical music

Funnily enough, I'm currently researching bands who played benefits for the Gay Liberation Front in the early 1970, and a lot of prog/hippy/rock acts were involved: Camel, Goblin, Monksilvar, Hawkwind, the Pink Fairies...

Avatar 4:11pm
Mr Fab:

I'm also not sure what is prog - I was always a huge fan of Roxy Music/Eno, Capt Beefheart, King Crimson/Fripp, Can, Hawkwind, Peter Gabriel solo. But you never hear Beefheart called "prog" like, say, ELP. I mean, is early Devo prog? Stuff like "Joko Hom" is in 7/8.
Avatar 4:12pm
worldsworstrecords:

I'm not sure if that was the same Goblin, Rich. The Italian band seem to have only existed from 74 onward I think, but these UK shows were 72/73... sadly there's very little info out there so I'm pissing in the dark somewhat
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Prog tends to be "progressive" in the sense of moving music beyond traditional pop structures of time etc. Lots of jazz influences, lots of classical influences. Lots of experimentation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm
Rich in Proganistan:

I nearly submitted a proposal all Prog program on the college station I was on briefly. It was under naïve assumption that: A: the people listening to the station would like to be exposed to unfamiliar music; and B: that there were listeners of the station.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm
Franco Twinkie:

GeorgieGirl! I'd love to hang out and brush up on the lost world of prog, but I have to go learn how to pick up my mom from bed without killing either of us.
Avatar 4:13pm
worldsworstrecords:

it's a conundrum, what's prog rock and what is art rock (Roxy), space rock (Hawkwind) and so on
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm
Rich in Proganistan:

Oh, another Goblin. Got you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm

Avatar 4:14pm
worldsworstrecords:

I think so Rich, but I'm not entirely sure
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

The lines get blurred quite a bit - like you say, art rock, space rock, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm
coelacanth∅))):

good luck Franco
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm
Rich in Proganistan:

I tend to think of all of it as 'art rock', even some Glam, RIO, Canterbury, et al. But Prog seems like it's distinguished by the musicianship of the artists, some classic music discipline (Jazz, Classical, Folk, etc.).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I'll add a theory here that musical definitions can be better explained by drugs and social culture (or lack of) rather than the music itself most of the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

So Mod tends to be sharp and short (speed), psychedelia very long and out there (LSD), and prog a bit wilder and dreamy and long (dope), etc. Very general definition, I know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Discuss ;-) lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I did read an interview with Rick Wakeman where he said that Radiohead needed to man up and admit they were a prog band, which made me laugh ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm
coelacanth∅))):

well, like..."punk rock". what the hell is punk rock? wasn't rock & roll by definition all punk rock at one point?
by the time the term was a "genre" there were vague lines between punk rock, rock & roll, pop... what's "new wave"? pop music.
Avatar 4:19pm
Mr Fab:

Your theory could be right, GG! i do think of my favorite wild 'n' crazy rock n roll, as "beer-soaked," and the best vocal/EZ as cocktail music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm
coelacanth∅))):

radiohead is definitely a prog band
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Mr Fab - there you go. Culture plays a huge part, I think :-)

Avatar 4:30pm

There's also a pastoral element to prog, I think. Not quite as pastoral as folk but on the same lines.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm

Chris: Gong have always struck me as "Sunday morning, I'm still mashed" music.

I just threw my card in the hat for Gentle Giant. But don't look at me, I love early Yes and the first 2 ELO albums too. ;)

Gong is my fav today... only because I need to outplay them as much as I have with Floyd. However, Caravan's In the land LP is a huge fav.

Thanks, my moustache comes out when I switch from Otis to Progus. 70s stash!

Chris said that they should do a Rick Wakeman Funko Pop. I may have to do one of my custom ones ;-)

i love gentle giant, but my favorites are probably pink floyd; then king crimson; then maybe gentle giant, maybe yes.....

I know this sounds weird but I've never been grabbed by Pink Floyd in the way most people I know have. I never liked them when I was a kid and I've only warmed up to them a little over the years.

right on. bitchin' stash, man.

All albums pre-dark side, I go back to on the regular. However, sometimes I just have a fix on a blue moon to hear Animals or Dark Side... but The Wall and Final Cut, my 13 year old self is like wow rad dude, and I am not listening, not one bit, sorry old me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm
ParUbi:

I especially love the early Pink Floyd, just because it is so much more free spirited and charming
  5:30pm
Martinibomb:

I think I just need to get some mushrooms or lsd and listen to nothing but Pink Floyd for 24hrs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm

I love Atom Heart Mother. Used to play that in my studio :-)

I mean Pink Floyd DO sound like architects ;-)
Avatar 5:31pm
Mr Fab:

Well MB, the Floyd have had a very rocky existence, from blinding brilliance to utter crap. Syd Barret was an outsider genius of the highest order, some latter album like "Meddle" are brilliant...and then there's what Otis said. Some great stuff scattered throughout the unnecessary ones.

When I was in middle school, I loved solo Roger Waters. I was young and thought Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking was killer. Ummmm, sorry Roger, I have tried, really I have. Only one I keep on the shelf here is the album The Body (with another fav, Ron Geesin)!

it took some immersion, but when wish you were here was constantly on the radio it clicked in me just as they stopped playing it to death. then, exploring what came before i fell in love.
favorite albums: piper at the gates of dawn; meddle; saucerful of secrets.
i stopped paying attention to them when the wall came out.

@linda wuz reading a study show our *ego* changes from one moment to the next and is not fixed. In the article I read there was a Buddhist involved somehow and he had to update his belief system about ego. Thought that was interesting and cool. How many religious orders can update a belief?

well, if Buddhism can't, it can't be done :-D

Though I certainly agree that the ego is constantly changing; it typically moves between pretending it isn't changing, fighting that change, or growth, in my experience.
