Kind of like taking your parents record collection and getting drunk in a Radio Shack. Rock and Roll, Rhythm and Blues, Garage Punk, Regular Punk and Old-Fashioned Weirdos. Hopefully you have the patience for this fast-paced sonic impatience. Not recommended for the fan of 4 minute songs.

T-Minus 5 minutes

The crowd is milling around the front of the stage, waiting for the first notes to burst forth and everything explodes into pogo-ing, slamming, stage diving mayhem...
Avatar 1:55pm
recordrouletteclub:

I can feel it.
Avatar 1:56pm
recordrouletteclub:

Macho bouncers and 1980's mullet-sound guys not really knowing what to expect from this crowd.
Avatar 1:57pm
Mr Fab:

Ha, right! Oh, and if anyone ever publishes a punk/new wave/alt glossary, 'the front of the stage' is known as "the pit."

by coincidence, doing my big annual punk rock blowout with my pal DJ FU this Thursday on KBOO.

Cool!!
Avatar 2:02pm
Mr Fab:

Would that be DJ Nazi Punks FU?
Avatar 2:04pm
Mr Fab:

Much to my chagrin, I see that the thing that insists on calling itself the Dead Kennedys is playing again. Resist, people, RESIST!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm
Rich in Washington:

He could be! He's a huge bald radical Jewish substitute teacher. He's also a vet of the San Francisco punk scene, later L.A., can be briefly glimpsed in Decline of the Western Civilization.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm
Rich in Washington:

You're killing it, Danny! This is freaking awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm
Rich in Washington:

I love what Jello calls them 'the world's greediest karaoke band'.
Avatar 2:07pm
recordrouletteclub:

LOTS OF TYPING!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm
Rich in Washington:

Kind of sad that the other DKs couldn't do something post-Jello DKs. They're all really talented. I quite liked both Ray's and Klaus' solo stuff. I guess there's more money in DK merch and endless reissues.
Avatar 2:10pm
recordrouletteclub:

DK was a LOT of talent, everyone in the band!! Love DH Peligro, one of my drummer idols.
Avatar 2:10pm
Mr Fab:

Yeah, with all this typing, Danny’s fngers will be bleeding like an LAPD cop after a Black Flag show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm
Rich in Washington:

Oh I know! Punk rock shows are really challenging to playlist.
Avatar 2:11pm
Mr Fab:

future Sheenas DJ Don Bolles on drums!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm
Rich in Washington:

Wow. I haven't heard this in a long time. I love how early Red Kross, Black Flag and Jerks songs have this cross pollination thing going on due to interchangeable members.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm
Rich in Washington:

Oh wow, Dude! This is so awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm

Dave Dictor of MDC lives in Portland now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm
Rich in Washington:

YES!
Avatar 2:15pm
Mr Fab:

the DKs are great instrumentalists, but hey, the other Doors seemed pretty talented too- Robby Kreiger actually wrote most of their biggest hits. But without Jimbo, the were nothing. Chemistry is a funny thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm
Rich in Washington:

I feel like I'm in a blender. But I like it.
Avatar 2:19pm

Blender in a good way, right?

Oh yeah!
Avatar 2:19pm
Mr Fab:

Great sound quote going into Fear. Steve Allen?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm
Rich in Washington:

I've been digitizing all these punk rock radio shows I had taped when I was in high school. It's pretty crazy hearing them again.
Avatar 2:22pm
recordrouletteclub:

Yup. Steve Allen. Its a record about your brain. Great LP!! Songs about the different parts of your brain, etc.
Avatar 2:23pm
recordrouletteclub:

"How To Think" LP
Avatar 2:23pm
Mr Fab:

I know what you mean, Rich The digital clarity is odd. All i need now is the voice of Rodney Bingenheimer popping in with "All riiiight! That was The Misfits...the actual Misfts... right here, on Rodney on the Roulette Club..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm
Rich in Washington:

I also had - but sadly can't find - a bunch of tapes of Rodney and the ROQ that a friend would tape for me when in LA on his frequent bouncing back and forth between his split parents.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm
Rich in Washington:

yeah, that Steve Allen record is really wacky.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm
Rich in Washington:

a lot of my tapes where of horrid quality, the reception on the radio really bad - until KBOO boosted its signal and went stereo in the mid-80s, etc. Plus they're 30 something years old now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm
Rich in Washington:

Tom 'Pig Champion' Roberts of Poison Idea did a great hardcore punk show for a year or two. Those are the tapes I am slowly digitizing and posting to archive dot org.
Avatar 2:27pm
Mr Fab:

Good man! Do you have a link?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm
Rich in Washington:

I'll put it on the Sheena FB page. I don't like posting audio/video links on people's live playlists.

Former Rodney listener myself!
Avatar 2:33pm
Mr Fab:

Hey Geez, Step back from the mosh pit, you might get slammed!

there are cool folk who've posted Rodney on the ROQ tapes. Hearing them again I'm surprised how few commercials they ran. Like two spots, and both for local businesses, like some boutique on Melrose or sumthin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm
Rich in Washington:

I've seen a few sites over the years that've had old Rodney shows posted. I should look again.

Avatar 2:39pm
recordrouletteclub:

FAB- Also The Freeze-Gulity Face EP is GREAT!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm
Rich in Washington:

Argh. I had this album in its Crass-style foldup cover and stupidly sold it. I have the reissue CD but the remixing is kind of stinky.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm
Rich in Washington:

Went through this idiotic period where I sold off the bulk of my punk records. I am not sure why. Much of it is astronomical now.
Avatar 2:42pm
recordrouletteclub:

I did the same thing.
Avatar 2:45pm
Mr Fab:

I found that out in 2010 when i brought a stack to Amoeba and was shocked with, "So this is $100 in cash, more in store credit.." Woah! I realized that I had actually INVESTED in something?!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm
Rich in Washington:

I also gave a lot of them to my son when I bought him his first turntable. He ended up having all of them stolen by a roommate.
Avatar 2:47pm
Mr Fab:

i tried to make a "What Would Husker Du?" bumper sticker. It looked really cool, but I don't really know how to make bumper stickers.
Avatar 2:47pm
geezerette:

This is so great! Used to love the music section of LA Weekly as much for group names as for listings. Where'd all the energy & humor go to?
Oh, that's right, Sheena's Jungle Room!!!
Avatar 2:50pm
Mr Fab:

Thanks geezerette, we try! Yeah, I used to pore over the Weekly. (Helped that it was free, heh heh.) Shame that it's become such a shell of it's old self. But hey, at least it's still being published, unlike the Village Voice.
Avatar 2:51pm
geezerette:

Oh man I miss the Village Voice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm
Rich in Washington:

I loved all the radio commercials on the Everything Went Black compilation.
Avatar 2:52pm
recordrouletteclub:

Rich-that was such a good idea to have an entire side of that 2xLP just commercials!! LOVE THAT
Avatar 2:54pm
Mr Fab:

Yeah, i chopped out some of those commercials for the Sheena stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm
Rich in Washington:

DICKS!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm

Has anyone here heard/seen that Radio Soulwax Hardcore or Die thing? It's an insane mixup/mashup of 80s hardcore. And the video animates all these iconic album covers.
Avatar 2:56pm
recordrouletteclub:

RICH--Uhhh...no. Sounds cool!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm
Rich in Washington:

This show is wonderful, recordrouletteclub! I feel like I stuck my finger in a light socket. Someone's gonna have to peel me off the ceiling.
Avatar 2:57pm
Mr Fab:

Wow, will check that our Rich. Radio Soulwax did some classics back in the turn-of-the-century mashup days
Avatar 2:57pm
recordrouletteclub:

Thanks Rich!! THat was the idea behind this show!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm
Rich in Washington:

I liked how Reagan Youth sort of morphed into this stoner rock metal thing later on. It's actually not bad.
