Hello Doug. A new copy of Lal Waterson's Teach Me To Be A Summer's Morning just arrived. Thirza was the first song played. Oh boy, especially as we lost a cat on the road outside the other week.

@Creature Boy ( Miles )
And a number of Cohen's photos were licensed for Burns's Country documentary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Fri. 9/20/19 9:15am Doug Schulkind:

@Uncle Michael
The claim that John Cohen is "Uncle John" and that the New Lost City Ramblers was "Uncle John's Band" has been called a "true rumor." The song mentions a number of songs performed widely by the NLCR. I elevate the rumor to myth and leave it at that. (We will be hearing more later.)

Avatar 🎃 Fri. 9/20/19 9:34am Sem:

Let's just say, ausmanx, that the federal Liberal party foisted 2 ill-chosen party leaders on Canadaians over a decade, waiting for 1) Trudeau to reach a minimally-acceptable age for a national leader, and 2) while the far right Conservative Party dismantled a lot of "social democratic" policy errors and thereby change fundamentally how Canada was seen beyond it borders. Mr. Trudeau is not the man his father was, ahem.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Fri. 9/20/19 10:45am Doug Schulkind:

Greetings, coelacanth∅! Groovings, Marie!

Marie, my WFMU marathon premium many years ago was a compilation I called Jazz Burns Ken. It was my outraged response to Burns's completely ignoring the world of jazz beyond U.S. borders. It's subtitle was "The World 'Jazz' Forgot" ("Jazz" referring to Burns's documentary)

Someone actually posted it on Discogs: www.discogs.com...

I heard they were singing Lotte Lenya songs, Listener Gregory, but BOTH COULD BE TRUE.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Fri. 9/20/19 10:52am Doug Schulkind:

Yeah, I did leave that dangling, didn't I? That was 17 freaking years ago. (That's a lot of dangle.)
  Fri. 9/20/19 10:52am Listener Gregory:

@Doug, there is much in this world that we will never know.
Avatar Fri. 9/20/19 10:52am northguineahills:

@Doug: and that was just one of many flaws in that doc. I'm pretty sure once he gets past Hank Williams, it will be shite in the Country doc, but so far it's been inclusive a bit more and mentioned bios of minor characters. Not confident he's able to ingest constructive criticism.

Oh god, the depths of my loathing for Ken Burns's "Jazz" documentary (and, frankly, most of his two-dimensional pablum) knows no nadir.

I thank Ken Burns for his service in digging up and sharing some incredible imagery.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/20/19 10:55am Funky16Corners:

Burns seems to labor under the assumption that a good documentarian can make a good documentary about anything they set their mind to. One would assume that someone with a real affinity for the subject matter (at least in a documentary of a historical nature) would have an affinity for the subject matter.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/20/19 11:09am Listener Scott:

I'm enjoying the Ken Burns country music documentary but I do get a real sense that he's coming to the subject as an outsider.

Still, even at 16 hours he's bitten off far more than he can chew; I mean, any documentary purporting to cover such a broadly-stated topic is going to suffer from editorial shallowness.

Still, I'm learning stuff I didn't know along the way and watching some amazing footage. So I'm basically okay with it. I don't sense that there's a danger he's having an adverse impact on the history of the subject, but I could be wrong because it's not really my subject matter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/20/19 11:09am Listener Scott:

Thanks for the extended John Cohen set which featured a lot of acapella folk music. I'm reading Jonathan Coe's "Middle England" at the moment and in the first chapter there is a reference to a tune sung by an unaccompanied Shirley Collins with quotes from the lyrics. I think it must be "Adieu to old England" which was the title tune of an album released on Topic in 1974. Would love to hear it, so that's a request, Doug.

It will be my pleasure, Hugo! (Maybe next week.) Welcome aboard the Drummer Dinghy!

Hi all! Late arrival (meetings...sheesh).
Looking back at the set list, Grateful Dead? Don't recall hearing them in these parts, cool!
Avatar 🎃 Fri. 9/20/19 11:22am Gina Bacon:

That's so good to hear, Doug...thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/20/19 11:23am Hugo:

I saw on Discogs that there are only two people having registered copies of Doug's premium. Hmm, I'll make it three.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/20/19 11:23am coelacanth∅:

i've seen John Cohen around, or someone who looks just like him. the wiki page says he resided in "lower hudson valley". i don't know if where i live is south enough to be considered "lower".
that lower picture is very familiar though.
rest in peace.
  Fri. 9/20/19 11:24am Marie:

Hey Doug, thanks for the linky to your premium premium
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Fri. 9/20/19 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

Remember that FMU premium I made from all those amazing Studio One recordings you gave me? That still blows me away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Fri. 9/20/19 11:26am Doug Schulkind:

Hellooooooo, holland oooooooats!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/20/19 11:32am Hugo:

Yes, and there's much more in the archives, Studio One and other labels. You'll get them in due course.

Belated welcome, Stanley dear!

I'm liking the Country doc, but then, all you have to do to get me to like them is have lots of great music (the higher the proportion of music to talk, the better). I am learning some stuff (only in the middleof episode 2).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Fri. 9/20/19 11:42am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Scott
I bet Barbara Manrell is going to sound better than you remember. Just a hunch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Fri. 9/20/19 11:43am Doug Schulkind:

Oh hey! Forgot to say hey to you, doctorjazz! HEY!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Fri. 9/20/19 11:46am Doug Schulkind:

Chase the Sun Boy was the name of my first band in high school.
Avatar Fri. 9/20/19 11:46am Bill Mac:

No worries Doug. I may run under a minute or two. It always works out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Fri. 9/20/19 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

It's God's plan, Bill Mac. And God rented us the turntables.
Avatar Fri. 9/20/19 11:48am Bill Mac:

You gotta have some monumental testicles to perform under this particular moniker.
