For more than 25 years, Bob Irwin, the Dean of Sundazed Music, has befuddled, disoriented, and otherwise thrilled collectors and consumers alike by refusing to drive between the lines. Swerving wildly from garage to psych, from surf to soul, from biker to bossa, Bob’s steering with his elbows and hollerin’ like a banshee as he careens all over Route ‘60s, knocking over traffic cones.

The show is called Big Planet Noise! – and it’s hosted by Bob and Gina Frary Bacon, the gal with the great voice. It’s almost always all-vinyl, from Bob’s insane collection. The show became a must-listen in Nashville, a town unaccustomed to such carryings-on, and it’s now primed to become a part of your not-too-proud-to-be-surprised lives. Strap in and head to WFMU.org’s Rock ’n’ Soul Ichiban stream, every Monday from 8-10 pm EST!

Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 8:16pm vanhooserd:

Yes. I don't know if Vee ever confirmed that Dylan really played with him. I'm joking about tapes. And I didn't mean to type Booby.

Thanks, joedz! Yours, too!
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 8:23pm Julie P.:

Fortunately not, Snayle, it turned just enough so that we only got some wind and rain (which we're quite used to here in the summer!). Had it been 30 miles or so closer to the coast it would have been a different story.

Gaylord - great score!!!!

So glad it missed you, Julie.

Snayle - and Dick Van Dyke.
  Mon. 9/9/19 8:45pm joedz:

This Graham Gouldman was actually a 45 backed with his own version of No Milk Today.
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 8:45pm Snayle:

youtu.be...
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 8:49pm vanhooserd:

So...don't compare guitars to banjos?
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 8:49pm bigplanetnoise:

joedz - a U.S. 45? Now I need that.
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 8:50pm Gina Bacon:

Don't talk about banjos!
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 8:50pm bigplanetnoise:

David - so funny. I talk about that piece of paper in our office that lists things that I don't like. Banjo-to-guitar comparisons are there, I believe.
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 8:50pm Gina Bacon:

Hahaha!
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 8:50pm Gina Bacon:

If that's not there, we need an addendum!
  Mon. 9/9/19 8:51pm Jay S.:

Love this one!

The organ on this track!
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 8:52pm bigplanetnoise:

Jay - me too. I was gonna play the 45, but I recently stumbled upon a beautiful stereo LP. So I went there instead.
  Mon. 9/9/19 8:52pm Andy R:

Wait, so this was issued on HBR? I thought they were on that other label that starts with an A...can't think of the name.
  Mon. 9/9/19 8:53pm Jay S.:

Abnak
  Mon. 9/9/19 8:53pm joedz:

Bob - yes a US 45 by Graham Gouldman on RCA. He also had a 45 of For Your Love on the same label.
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 8:53pm bigplanetnoise:

Andy. Quite a few labels. You're thinking of Abnak. That's where the hits were. But - JetStar, HBR, Abnak, ABC Paramount. They made the rounds.
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 8:54pm vanhooserd:

Bob...maybe you're working too hard, too many irons in the fire, etc.
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 8:54pm bigplanetnoise:

joedz - please send me your copy for verification.
  Mon. 9/9/19 8:54pm joedz:

Five Americans also had some great singles on Jetstar that are still in my wish list
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 8:55pm bigplanetnoise:

David - I always work too hard!
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 8:55pm bigplanetnoise:

Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 8:59pm bigplanetnoise:

Their Lp was actually recorded before Easter Everywhere, but the label held it back for a full year...

Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 9:05pm bigplanetnoise:

I did - but I'm playing the LP right now. Picked up a perfect copy here in town just the other day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/9/19 9:06pm Uncle Michael:

Cripes this Nazz is good!
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 9:06pm bigplanetnoise:

The black vinyl copies of the 2nd Nazz sound so much better than the red vinyl. Better vinyl, I guess.
  Mon. 9/9/19 9:06pm Dolemite:

..like Donkey Kong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/9/19 9:07pm Uncle Michael:

I'm stealing this track for my show and I don't care who knows it.
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 9:07pm bigplanetnoise:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/9/19 9:07pm coelacanth∅:

understandable
Mon. 9/9/19 9:07pm Tim from LH:

Todd could play!
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 9:08pm Julie P.:

If I recall correctly, the original colored vinyl LP's were kind of a marketing gimmick and weren't necessarily intended to be played.
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 9:08pm Julie P.:

Tim from LH, Todd can still play! He rocks!
  Mon. 9/9/19 9:08pm joedz:

I've got a red vinyl one, just to have it - found at a flea market for a couple of bucks.
  Mon. 9/9/19 9:08pm Jay S.:

Puzzling why that Nazz cut didn't become a classic rock staple
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 9:11pm vanhooserd:

Golden Dawn produced by Kenny Rogers' bother Lelan.
  Mon. 9/9/19 9:11pm Chuck:

I always thought that The Nazz didn't make it big because of the name???
  Mon. 9/9/19 9:12pm joedz:

Jay S - Open My Eyes never even became a classic rock staple!
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 9:12pm GregRnNashville:

Julie..engineer producer folk were taught back in the day all colored vinyl is inferior....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/9/19 9:13pm coelacanth∅:

i've heard colored records referred to as "plastic, not vinyl" (although vinyl IS plastic, but...) i guess they're different materials.
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 9:13pm Gina Bacon:

Favorite lyrics of the night!
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 9:13pm bigplanetnoise:

Black vinyl has the "slick" agent that colored wax does not. Graphite??? Something.
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 9:14pm Julie P.:

GregR, that's what I always heard. These days with the new releases it's no longer the case.
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 9:14pm bigplanetnoise:

I was sooooo happy to find a mono copy of this. Geek.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/9/19 9:15pm coelacanth∅:

i think the golden dawn lp is very good; but it didn't remind me of the elevators until a friend told me it sounded like the elevators.
...and, again, very good...but not at the level of easter everywhere.
  Mon. 9/9/19 9:16pm Chuck:

Kind of like the MC5... what kind of name is that? unless you knew marijuana cigarette blah blah blah you don't know!!
  Mon. 9/9/19 9:16pm Doug Schulkind:

What a breathless beautiful mess tonight’s show is. Pulse-quickening delights!
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 9:16pm bigplanetnoise:

coelacanth∅ - agreed.
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 9:16pm TDK60:

Damn! I used to have this Jimi tune, on an early 45 version of Hey Joe (I think) as the B-Side. Lost it and was never able to find again.
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 9:16pm Mailman Tom:

Norton Records re-issued this Hendrix song on a picture sleeve 45
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 9:17pm Gina Bacon:

Thanks, Doug! So glad you're here!
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 9:17pm bigplanetnoise:

Thank you, Doug!!!!!!!!
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 9:17pm bigplanetnoise:

Mailman - ahem. that was Sundazed!!!!
  Mon. 9/9/19 9:17pm joedz:

The original Hendrix 45 had a picture sleeve which is now very pricey
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/9/19 9:18pm Uncle Michael:

Chuck, I don't follow you MC5-wise.
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 9:19pm Mailman Tom:

Sundazed, of course!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/9/19 9:19pm coelacanth∅:

i admit i do not know the origin of the name mc5
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 9:19pm TDK60:

(I think) Reprise later released the Hey Joe 45 with another B-side.
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 9:19pm bigplanetnoise:

joedz - I do not have the pic sleeve. Do you???
  Mon. 9/9/19 9:19pm Dolemite:

Bob/Gina, any chance of spinning the mono mix of Beck’s Bolero sometime?
  Mon. 9/9/19 9:20pm Chuck:

The rock group MC5... supposedly it stood for marijuana cigarette something or other!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/9/19 9:20pm Uncle Michael:

Motor City Five
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 9:20pm bigplanetnoise:

Dolemite - we have in the past, and I'm happy to do it again very soon! With the extra backwards guitar at end that was on the single only?!?!?!?
  Mon. 9/9/19 9:20pm Eargasm!:

I can never get tired of Creedence.
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 9:21pm GregRnNashville:

A legit American band that had more commercial success than CCR?
  Mon. 9/9/19 9:21pm joedz:

TDK60 - later release of Hey Joe had Foxy lady on the other side
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 9:21pm Julie P.:

Bob, the agent in black vinyl you're thinking of is black carbon. And coelacanth∅, vinyl is a type of plastic, there are different formulations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/9/19 9:21pm coelacanth∅:

TDK -stonefree

Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 9:22pm bigplanetnoise:

Mailman - OF COURSE YOU DID!!! Killing me as always!
  Mon. 9/9/19 9:23pm joedz:

Bob - I do have a copy of the sleeve, somewhat worn but the seams are good, and the price was right. Found in A-town last year
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 9:23pm bigplanetnoise:

joedz - nice find!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/9/19 9:24pm Uncle Michael:

  Mon. 9/9/19 9:33pm Eargasm!:

I'm not sure if I can agree with that about the Beach Boys. Their greatest success was certainly prior to them primarily becoming a vehicle for Brian's studio progressions.

Great show tonight! Re: Steve Miller — I discovered those first four or so LPs “late,” as it were, but there is something cool on everyone of those early LPs... I actually like the “freaky l” tracks over the bluesy tracks.
Avatar Mon. 9/9/19 9:59pm Julie P.:

Til next week, all!

Great show. The Wife started asking me about who played at Woodstock and the many festivals of the summer of 69 so couldn't keep up with the comments board. Then she started asking about the Vietnam war and The Draft and the cost of an LP in 69. Reliving that year of peace and love and marketing changes for pop music with BPN as the soundtrack.
