Favoriting August 25, 2019: You Can Sample

Over the past three decades I have been sampling for music projects. From recording to cassettes... to saving on floppy to zips... to organizing on the hard drive. Today we are going to hear those samples back-to-back for 4 hours.

Thousands of files have been sourced for future 'You Can Sample' shows. This is the first installment of 3,400 sounds.

Some quick notes on the process of collecting samples:
- In Windows 10, searched all sample folders for *.wav
- Used a tiny program, 'Bulk Rename Utility' to randomize the order of files and apply a number prefix (00000)
- Selected blocks of files in the folder (in 4 hour sets for future shows)
- Open Appended Files in Adobe Audition (and took a screenshot that appears below)
- Used another tiny program, 'JR Directory Printer' to print the directory contents of the files in the folder to a text file.

Volumes are erratic and all over the place. Hey, welcome to sample land.

Oh, and I'm listening to this for the first time today, live with you on the show! It's all random and I'm sure we will hear some funny bits colliding with one another.

I figure this show also provides an inner view to my headspace as I took all these sounds and organized them so they must mean, something... or nothing at all.

I will be listening mostly outside in my freshly clipped garden out of reach of the screen. It's a beautifull evening and it's too damn dark in the house. :-)
Avatar 2:34pm
Otis Fodder:

Love to listen outdoors too.

Really enjoying the show, tho i feel like this should be driving me mental. Guess I'm already there!

I'm not the only one playing music in the street, so I have to turn up the volume a bit :-) :-) :-)

I'd love to listen to outdoors but it's 110 degrees out there. The "joys" of Arizona.
Avatar 2:38pm
Otis Fodder:

I think after listening to Negativland and John Oswald and others over the years... this is pop music to the ears. Just a 4 hour single, rather than a 3 minute 30 second one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm
Jan Turkenburg:

another heatwave coming up here too, next week...
Avatar 2:41pm
Otis Fodder:

If this was the 80s/90s again, I'd release four 60min cassettes of this show. Which by the end of this "You Can Sample" series we will have over 24 hours. Planning on 6 future shows, maybe 7 or 8. At least 4.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Considering following your example Otis... I'm back in again... I fel through my chair and cut my finger... wow... I think I'm lucky I didn't break it... Hey... After Tea sample!!!
Avatar 2:46pm
Otis Fodder:

Yes, After Tea!! Great single there.
Avatar 2:47pm
Don-O:

I know we haven't reached the one hour mark yet, but this does feel like an eternity so far.
Avatar 2:47pm

Hope you are okay, ow!
Avatar 2:47pm

You fell thru your chair, how does that happen?! Like, you're so skinny, you slipped thru? Or you're a ghost with no bodily mass?
Avatar 2:48pm
Otis Fodder:

Jan Ghostenburg!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm
Jan Turkenburg:

No, anything but skinny, that's the problem... The plastic chair collapsed under my weight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm
Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

This is kin to my cassette of repeating grooves i recorded for many years. I always had this one blank cassette at the ready and whenever a record would start repeating, i would record 8 repetitions. Haven't listened to that in years! Hope it hasn't melded.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm
Jan Turkenburg:

cut my right little finger on the torn plastic. Treated it the way I was tought and put a plaster on it. The throbbing is fading now, so I'm pretty sure we're in the clear...
Avatar 2:54pm
Otis Fodder:

Oh, yea! If you dig it out GST, I would love to hear it. If you like, I could play some on the show? Tape fun time!
Avatar 2:55pm

Jan, I hope this madness is moving pain from your finger to your ears.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm
Jan Turkenburg:

What a fun idea GST!
Avatar 2:56pm

You know, that would make for some great bits for the Sheena Stream. Granny Spicy Tuna Loops!
Avatar 2:57pm
Mr Fab:

yeah GST, you gotta dig out that tape.
Avatar 2:58pm

I sent Fab my entire oneshot VOX folder of samples for the Sheena stream. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm
Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Otis, that's exciting, i'll see if i can't locate that gem. I used to do all sorts of kooky things with a tape-to-tape deck. Never even graduated to an 8-track.

Love to hear... and play... planning another guest/segments show to air in September.
Avatar 3:02pm
Otis Fodder:

Jan and Georgy have segments ready to go for the September show + a couple other listeners. Will most likely air in 2 weeks but will confirm in the next week, sourcing a couple more submissions, which is open to anyone who wants to throw me 5-20 minutes of audio to play.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm

Lots of Raymond Scott (samples used on a Basta album, Raymond Scott Rewired) a couple of years ago.
