Recent news:

Facebook's mind-reading helmet covered on A Little Slice of Tech Pie from today (my 2-minute segment on Wake & Bake with Clay Pigeon).

People Are Starting to Realize How Voice Assistants Actually Work (Sidney Fussell in the Atlantic, Aug 15): "And Facebook makes five. Which is to say, this isn’t so much a series of “scandals” surrounding human review as the results of a user base becoming minimally aware of how voice-assistant technology actually works. Our listening devices did what they were designed to do. We just didn’t realize who was listening."

John Gruber on Daring Fireball, Aug 16: "If I graded Apple on the privacy and trust implications of [Siri audio surveillance], I’d give them an F."

• From Aral Balkan (Aug 14): "Don’t call it a techlash, there’s no backlash against technology, there’s a backlash against a single toxic strain of exploitative, colonial, surveillance-based technology developed and exported by Silicon Valley. There’s a Valleylash. There’s a yearning for techmancipation."

• From recent Techtonic guest Chris Gilliard (referring to a NYT article today, Aug 19):

Whenever you're in a friends house with a smartsoundtube, start running water and say 'we can't speak freely here'

We have nothing but the dumbest devices we can find. Even our car is an idiot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/19/19 6:10pm Phillippe Bastille:

We test-drove an Alexa when they first came out. Best thing about it was that when Alexa was prattling on you could say "Alexa, shut the f*ck up!" and she would.

We need a mole. Someone can take one of those listening analysis jobs and report back on the situation.

Signing in NOW so I can say I use DuckDuckGo as my primary search engine! I avoid Google as much as I can.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/19/19 6:50pm Richard S:

And I have to give DuckDuckGo a HUGE round of applause for allowing me, the user, to ROTATE A MAP! I can turn it to better fit the map on my computer screen. Google doesn't do that. They won't even let you do a simple "Rotate 90 degrees" like Every. Single. Image. Viewer. does.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/19/19 6:50pm Mark Hurst:

Thanks, Richard, I wasn't aware of that map-rotation feature!
Avatar Mon. 8/19/19 6:52pm JakeGould:

But what kind of “reading” is he referring to? I read tons of decent stuff online, but at a local discount store the security guard saw me carrying a William Blake book and recommended Milton William Cooper’s conspiracy classic: “Behold a Pale Horse.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/19/19 6:55pm Carmichael:

I use Duck Duck Go exclusively, and I am telling all my friends.
  Mon. 8/19/19 6:56pm Meesalikeu:

fyi a downside is people can view yr search history in ddg. start page and search encrypt do not.
Avatar Mon. 8/19/19 6:56pm geezerette:

Thanks, Mark, for the valuable public service you provide every week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 8/19/19 6:57pm Carmichael:

If you start DDG in incognito mode, there is no search history.
  Mon. 8/19/19 6:57pm Sam:

You should tell people it’s duckduckgo.com, not duck.go which is what I thought you were saying.
