Another Joe Brainard book worth investigating is The Nancy Book. I, like Joe suffered with an obsession with the Ernie Bushmiller comic characters Nancy and Sluggo. Joe, however bested me by collecting all his bizarre interpretations into a fantastic collection.

I'm doing my best to see all this through Larry's eyes, but I am drowning in my own memories of my own 1969.

I was in camp in the summer of '69. I remember hearing about both the moon launch and Woodstock on a transistor radio (mine, although by then it had been taken over by everyone) in a cabin in the pines.
Avatar Wed. 7/31/19 10:24pm coelacanth∅:

this was my older brother's favorite song from the hair soundtrack
Avatar Wed. 7/31/19 10:24pm Franco Twinkie:

I am a Nancy purist Matt. Even the John Stanley riffs left me cold. It's Bushmillers minimalism that has always held me captive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/31/19 10:25pm Funky16Corners:

@C - That's one of the reasons I opened the show with the Stooges. They were indicative of a bad vibe running through the country. Great music, but the antithesis of flower power
Avatar Wed. 7/31/19 10:26pm Erica1969:

In my opinion Good Morning Starshine was a better Oliver song than Jean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/31/19 10:26pm Funky16Corners:

I agree. I also love his version of Sunday Morning
Avatar Wed. 7/31/19 10:26pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/31/19 10:31pm Funky16Corners:

Hey New Lex!
Avatar Wed. 7/31/19 10:31pm Franco Twinkie:

I mentioned this on another show this week, but what the hell. Crystal blue Persuasion was the song that illustrated all the cholos in my junior high school getting into a more hippyish frame of mind. My junior high was soaked in drugs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/31/19 10:31pm Funky16Corners:

Henry - I can't launch it from my broadcast computer. What is it? I'll have to listen after the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/31/19 10:31pm chresti:

My brother had this one, I turned 12 in 69
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/31/19 10:32pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/31/19 10:34pm Webhamster Henry:

It's a recording of 1969 turning into 1970 over the radio, with the #1 one song of 1969: Honky Tonk Woman (which I actually think was Sugar Sugar, but they were too embarassed to play it)
Avatar Wed. 7/31/19 10:34pm Franco Twinkie:

This was under the Christmas tree in 1969.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/31/19 10:34pm Funky16Corners:

@Henry - Can I save it for future reference?
Avatar Wed. 7/31/19 10:34pm coelacanth∅:

my brother got cs&n but only after deja vu, which came after the woodstock st in his world. it was big in our house though because both my younger sister loved it and my mother approved of it. a moment of harmony in the house when that played.
(pun intended)
Avatar Wed. 7/31/19 10:36pm Erica1969:

I don't blame the radio for not playing Sugar Sugar. It IS embarrassing bubblegum music.
  Wed. 7/31/19 10:36pm Carmichael:

Thanks for the filthy hippie music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/31/19 10:36pm Funky16Corners:

It's a great pop song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/31/19 10:36pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Carmichael! It don't get no filthier!
Avatar Wed. 7/31/19 10:37pm coelacanth∅:

when honky tonk woman came on wabc during summer vacation, which was about once/hour, i had to pretend to have to go to the bathroom and run upstairs to another radio to listen to it, because my family always turned it off for that song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/31/19 10:37pm Webhamster Henry:

Sure! That's what it's for!
Also: 1970 is the beginning of the UNIX epoch (although this is not Jan 1, 1970 00:00:00 GMT)
  Wed. 7/31/19 10:38pm cupcakejenny:

Here’s a question - as an only child, how many of you think having an older sibling or cousin began your love of music or started you down the road?
  Wed. 7/31/19 10:39pm Carmichael:

My gosh, with the exception of Zager and Evans, I have seen all of these folks live. Because I am old.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/31/19 10:39pm chresti:

This is the first time I heard these songs through earbuds
  Wed. 7/31/19 10:39pm Carmichael:

I just saw Tommy James last year. Tremendous show.
Avatar Wed. 7/31/19 10:40pm Erica1969:

Tommy James, I found out has a radio show on the 60s on 6 on Sirius XM.
Avatar Wed. 7/31/19 10:41pm northguineahills:

@cupcakejenny: I was the oldest, and my younger brothers are the exact opposite of me, and don't listen to music. It took until I was 16 until I found music in the 90s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/31/19 10:42pm Funky16Corners:

@Jenny - That's a great question. As the oldest, I had to go outside the immediate family, though my Pop had a huge influence on me outside of the pop/rock world
Avatar Wed. 7/31/19 10:42pm coelacanth∅:

Jenny my parents, in a strange act of hipness, turned me/us on to music by the time i was 3-4; but my brother and (a little) my older sister propelled me. my friends had no idea what i was talking about most of the time, when it came to music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/31/19 10:43pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - Tommy James' show on Sirius 60s is GREAT! He plays a lot of cool music
  Wed. 7/31/19 10:43pm cupcakejenny:

@northguineahills I always felt I missed out on that though I had friends with older siblings that influenced the group a bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/31/19 10:43pm Webhamster Henry:

@cupcakejenny I was kind of a Broadway baby,( Saw Fiorello for my 4th birthday) but my big sister would buy pop music.
Avatar Wed. 7/31/19 10:44pm Erica1969:

I don't have Sirius XM, sadly. I just know he does from his Twitter account.
Avatar Wed. 7/31/19 10:44pm coelacanth∅:

i've met many "only children" who've said they didn't listen to music until they were 12, 13, 15, 16...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/31/19 10:44pm Funky16Corners:

@Henry - I remember listening to my father's Fiorello cast album!
  Wed. 7/31/19 10:45pm cupcakejenny:

Larry knows my parents were no influence. Though my dad read all the time when I was a kid. I think I got that bug more than music because of that.
Avatar Wed. 7/31/19 10:45pm Franco Twinkie:

Two memories from 1969 in sitting on our front lawn with my sister and her best friend with a transistor radio on that day in August and hearing the first confused and hysterical reports about Manson on KRLA. The other one was sitting on a lawn down the street with these guys who had a '58 Chevey panel truck with a FOUR track tape player and listening to We're Only In It For The Money and Axis Bold as Love endlessly. I think it was the only two tapes they had.
Avatar Wed. 7/31/19 10:46pm TheNewLexGofer:

@cupcakejenny: I'm an only, too. We moved to Ohio in '69 and my cousin weaned me off Herman's Hermits and got me listening to Steppenwolf and the Doors.
  Wed. 7/31/19 10:48pm Carmichael:

I’m fifth of six. My older siblings turned me onto folk music.
  Wed. 7/31/19 10:48pm cupcakejenny:

@coelacanth yes! Though something must have happened the summer I was 5/6 that cemented those songs in my head like this for Larry. Whenever I hear a song that I remember loving as s kid, it’s from 1976.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/31/19 10:48pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco -If you're only going to own two tapes, those two are pretty cool

my friend Jimmy had an older sister who seemed very hip (he and the sister were pretty much the exact models for the main character and sister in that tv show the wonder years) and i secretly had a crush on this older girl.
somehow Jimmy wasn't influenced much toward coolness by his hip sister!

Me too ngh. But I got in trouble as a kid for bringing a clock and calculator from Burger King at school and the teacher yelled at me for bad language when reciting a song from the Halloween episode.

Franco i decided very young, when i knew meet the beatles had only one crappy song on it and the hermans hermits album was all good, the peter paul and mary and Harry Belafonte albums -etc that if a group is good the whole album will be good, and you get a lot more music for your money.
i stuck with that idea for my life; but i did end up with 4-500 45s...mostly when i thought the album might not match the quality of the single.

@Jenny - Someone at NASA made them an actual mixtape for the trip. I have to look for the list of tracks.

I found another piece of music written and performed specifically for a broadcast of the moon landing, done by Duke Ellington for ABC but the fidelity was terrible.

Thank you for including John Stewart. Have yet to get any digital copies of his music and my LPs have long been packed away in storage. 1969 is year I graduated from high school and by 70 I had left my parents house never to return. @Erica: When I was in HS, there was a Burger King across the street. Since I aced every test, most teachers didn't care if I skiped. I was straight edge at the time, and one of my friends (who became the salutatorian), was an acid dealer (amongst other things). So I'd skip class w/ her, and give her clean urine, (definitely wouldn't work today).

Avatar Wed. 7/31/19 11:31pm Franco Twinkie:

The movie and the record album came out the summer before my first year of high school. They would set up a P.A. in the quad and blast the record during lunch. One memory is this one particular stoner who would mimic Alvin Lee doing Going Home while totally out of this mind on reds.
Avatar Wed. 7/31/19 11:31pm coelacanth∅:

actually the 2 John Sebastion songs are both favorite moments on that album. no other versions recorded of those songs are even worth hearing, in my opinion.

to be honest -and not that i wouldn't like to hear a less edited version -i think they did a damn good job with the original edit, to fit an overview onto 3 records. to this day very little of it is not still amazing to me. side 2 is mostly lackluster. that's it. the rest phenominal.

@franco: I went from looking like a straight-edge/Christian lad (at least to sell it to my parents) one summer to being an indie rocker my junior year of high school. That's when I found music, and took up extra jobs to buy records. The rest lays in the pain of my muscles after moving my records. At least my wife slapped some sense into me to stop going to record stores years ago...
