I used to like to take leftover pizza and get a skillet good and hot with olive oil and fry both sides of the pie, until they're nearly blackened. I think it depends on the type of pizza.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 12:14pm Rich in Washington:

Oh yeah. The new schedule change makes for a lot of inter-stream conflicts for me all around. It does mean - for me - that I'll now get to enjoy this show on my morning commutes now, which is good.

CDs do decay. So do some cassette tapes. I've got some inexpensive brand cassettes that have survived being poorly stored over decades that sound pretty good and premium brand cassettes that started going south the moment the shrink wrap came off of them.
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 1:45pm βrian:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:04pm Michael 98145:

@Rich, my wife has actually been enjoying my ancient cassettes while she works out -
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:06pm fred:

@carmichael: what would you recommend to digitize cassettes or records? I used to have a minidisk thing that did that well, but it got stolen years ago (that must have been a very disappointed thief)
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 2:07pm βrian:

I have the same problem, @fred. I have some recordings of my father that are at risk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:14pm sphere:

from my experience, getting records and cassettes into digital form is easy, but chopping them up into separate tracks is an absolute pain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:14pm Rich in Washington:

I just send my Tascam deck straight into the soundcard of a computer as a AIFF for editing, processing later (yeah. right). No need for fancy converters. I see those cheap walkman knockoff players with USB out and cringe. They just look cheezy. Not knockin' USB/Firewire interfaces - I've just never felt like I needed one for ripping records or tapes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:15pm Linda Lee:

i've done a lot of digitizing with an analogue system, through a T cable that runs between the analogue amp & the computer's mic jack ~ i used audacity to convert the raw data file to sound files.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:16pm Linda Lee:

you do one track at a time, if you want. chop it up however you like. easy peasy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:17pm Linda Lee:

the T cable has male RCA plugs > male mini plug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:18pm Linda Lee:

with audacity it doesn't have to be mp3.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:18pm Linda Lee:

it's just really damn time consuming. but with irreplaceable sounds, it's a good idea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:20pm Linda Lee:

in audacity you can clean up the sound, too. reduce tape hiss on tapes, take out pops in vinyl lps. it's always been a good program for me. easy to learn. intuitive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:20pm Rich in Washington:

That's what I do, LL. Audacity's great.
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 2:20pm βrian:

So I'd need to run from my Nakamichi to a USB Type-C port. How does *that* work?
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 2:21pm Lixiviated Life:

sorry I'm late
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:21pm Linda Lee:

agree agree! the version i use is a few years old now. i'm sure the newer versions are really spiffy.
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 2:21pm βrian:

Ah, but there is an earphone port. I had the sense that was one-way out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:22pm Linda Lee:

isn't it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:23pm Rich in Washington:

I love some of the noise reduction tools of Audacity. As far as fixing major fidelity problems, I sometimes think I have a tin ear. Right now, I'm just ripping as many tapes as I can and doing almost no editing or restoration - just bulk archiving. Eventually, I need to study how to really use EQ and noise reduction properly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:23pm Linda Lee:

you need the mic jack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:24pm diciassette:

Behringer makes a good, affordable DAC, UCA202. I have it hooked up to one of the tape loops. Can record anything w/Audacity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:24pm Linda Lee:

agree, Rich, just get 'em done. meanwhile Audacity adds tools for clean up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:24pm diciassette:

ps: Ahoy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:25pm Linda Lee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:26pm Rich in Washington:

Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 2:28pm cuteCloud:

loving all the Tribe Called Red you're playing Olivia :3
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:28pm Rich in Washington:

Open reel is fun because you can physically manipulate the tape, its movement, etc. I still have an old Akai, which I baby and only set up when absolutely necessary. It needs restoration, but I don't have the funds, sadly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:29pm Andrew Waterloo:

You can also get tiny USB mixers from Behringer, I use one to connect laptop and desktop to my stereo.. haven't tried the USB port yet
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:29pm Linda Lee:

do you know Amulets? manipulated tape is his thing. he's starating to produce a machine with manual tone & speed adjustment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:30pm Linda Lee:

he's starating!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:30pm Linda Lee:

he's asking a wee pile for the machine, tho. boo hoo hoo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:31pm Ken From Hyde Park:

In case there's a Garbecue this summer, there should be a table with tapes and things set up. Folks can play around and make some recordings or mixes on the spot.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:34pm Carmichael:

@Fred, sorry for the delay. Here is what I use (minus the turntable): www.dak.com...

There are other competitors out there, too. I bought a cassette machine that plugs into that board, but I can''t remember where.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:38pm fred:

@Ken From Hyde Park: I think there should also be a stand where you can hammer what is presented as the original Heavy Metal record into dust (my guess is that the actual crap is played from mp3, but it could be cathartic). Ike would be a regular
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:38pm chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:39pm olivia:

hey agnes - I misspelled! its kyeoshin
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:41pm Carmichael:

@chresti, really slick little system. Kinda labor intensive on the back end, when you split up tracks, name them and organize folders. But otherwise a lot of fun. I can see that being my retirement hobby for my house full o' records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:41pm Rich in Washington:

I've just never used USB for audio.
I'm not purposely a luddite - I just don't know why I would it need to send audio into my computer for. I've just always sent the analog signal into a computer that way ever since computers have had stereo soundcards.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:42pm fred:

@Carmichael: Thanks! I'll have to look seriously into that later (bit of a crash crunch at the moment)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 2:43pm Barney Grubbs:

There used to be a noise-ish band around where I went to college called Carne A (the A stood for something different every time they played--Assassin, Arkansas, etc.) that had a dude playing live reel-to-reel tape loops/noise during their live sets (possibly Bill Nelson from Man is the Bastard/Bastard Noise/Sleestak/Geronimo). He would end up with a pile of tangled tape on stage next to him.
