I've been meaning to look into a bird feeder myself. My new backyard has quite a lot of cool birds. So far I have seen lots of Blue Jays and Cardninals and Robins. my sister routinely buys nice, hand-made wooden (usually) bird feeders and hangs them in ways that they get broken by wind or branches etc then i ask shall i fix it? but because i'm also her employee (not technically, or legally because i'm a private contractor) she says no, throw it out because she doesn't think it's worth paying for (again)
i can't throw it out so i fix it on my own time

I've decided to make an effort to watch more in the mornings. Maybe try to get some photos. I have this great big oak tree with vines growing up the side. I saw the wood pecker on it and regret not having a camera or even my phone with me at the time.

I had an idea for a bird feeder come to me this morning. A mourning dove was perched right next to my air conditioner and was constantly squeaking a mating call. I was fine with that.

But then I realized: What about an air-conditioner sized box that is like a Windows terrarium. Not exactly a window box or a bird feeder but a big box you can put in an apartment window that birds will (hopefully)_ find home in? Because a lot of apartment buildings don’t allow bird feeders and such so this could be a sneaky cool thing.

Like a bigger window box that can hold plants and bird stuff.

Dropof do you know what kind of vines they are? certain vines (like poison ivy, asiatic bittersweet, and wisteria...) will eventually kill a tree, which invites termites, which brings the woodpeckers.

I was talking with an artist once who was contemplating a public sculpture he had been commissioned for. One of his ideas was to carve an inconspicuous hole into the side of the hill at the edge of the park and put a small bronze door, as though it was an entrance to a secret world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm

Birds like to look at themselves in windows and mirrors, they think it's another bird.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm

I bought a bird feeder years ago and still haven't put it up. The level at which it would be optimal for bird viewing would be too high for me to reach without a special platform or ladder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm
coelacanth∅:

if the vines hold onto the tree by tons of little roots, looks kind of like an endless millipede, it's probably poison ivy. i'd cut it clean through with a saw, close to the ground, if it were my tree. (with disposable gloves, slowly and carefully) that can kill even a giant oak.
if it's another kind of ivy (true ivy) it probably wouldn't kill a big oak.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm

a few years ago i bought an "antique xylophone" via ebay. it was in an old box with old newspapers and a crinkly vintage dress and some other fabric and some parts of old stuff, just thrown in the box with it. one thing was what i figure must be the door to an old doll house. i glued it to the wall on a shelf but no one who came over ever noticed it.
i still have it, just floating around the kitchen.

@fred@1:06, interesting. The matinee price is now only in the mornings in many cinemas in the US though it used to be all shows before 4 or 6 p.m. (cheapskate cinema chains, grrrr) so oddly the word is almost “returning” to mornings.

melinda:

@Linda haha, no! If I could drive distances I would visit though. I'm always interested in odd knicknacks and scrap that could be used to decorate outside, but I'm also trying to get rid of stuff. The dish fragments are cool because some have been tumbled and edges smoothed like beach glass. And I wonder why they ended up in the water. The shore where they appear is right below what was once the Mariners' Hospital, and nearby is an island the was once the home of the state school for the deaf, so those are possible sources.
