Favoriting April 3, 2019: Hi-Waisted Modernists #018 - Bat Country
DJ GeorgyGirl is somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert and the drugs are beginning to take hold. Today's Hi-Waisted Modernists is deep in Bat Country with KPM for company. Because when the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

Mr Fab:

Hey GG, hi all! Boy, did I take a fair amount of actual wasted trips to Vegas. One more for old times' sake!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Oh no! Bad weather?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Hi Mr. Fab!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hey Mr Fab!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Expect a mix of very funky and very deep KPM today with an overlay of "Fear and Loathing"!
Avatar 3:07pm
Mr Fab:

I used this very recording of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" for a mashup sound collage thingie years ago. Harry Dean Stanton reading?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Music always cheers me up :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm
melinda:

hello high-waisteds
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Aha!! It may very well be - I thought it was Martin Sheen but I think you have it. ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hello Melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Good job Darryl's not here, or I'd be emptying his bank account again! ;-)
Avatar 3:11pm
Mr Fab:

Hey Melinda!
After 2 weeks of "Alice In Wonderland", this is the logical follow-up - it kind of was the "Alice" of it's day...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I have to confess that I chose this because I spotted the book on my shelf but there IS a connection. Must have been my subconscious talking!
Avatar 3:14pm
Mr Fab:

After "Alice" you said, quoting Hunter S Thomson, "It still wasn't weird enough for me."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

LOL!!! There you go ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

My partner just said "Blimey! It's a bit funky this week!" :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Music is a mix of '74 and '76
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

It sounds like I've put together the soundtrack for a new 70s cop drama series ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

"Hawkshaw & Bennett - Cops For Hire"!
Avatar 3:21pm
Mr Fab:

Ha! well, trippy psych would be too obvious, eh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm
joe:

I'm totally ok with a 70's cop show soundtrack day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I think I mined that well over the last two weeks ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hey Joe! :-)
  3:22pm
Martinibomb:

yeah and this mid70s stuff is cool cause they got lots o synth stuff.. love
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I hesitate to use the word "masculine" but it definitely has that energy :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I never realised how much Harry Dean Stanton and Martin Sheen sound alike. Were they maybe from the same part of the US?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Christ, this music is fabulous :-)
Avatar 3:28pm
Mr Fab:

just checked: Not only is that indeed Harry Dean, but weirdly enough, that's Jim Jarmusch as Raoul Duke.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm
joe:

THis all works perfect as last night I just rewatched NY77 The Coolest Year in Hell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Blimey!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm
melinda:

Maybe they both adopted a Hollywood accent of their generation. Harry Dean Stanton is from Kentucky, I don't think Martin Sheen is from the South.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Just looked up Martin Sheen - Ohio. Weird that they sound the same!!! Maybe Martin Sheen is a Roger Corman fan?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@melinda - that sounds plausible. That generational thing
Avatar 3:34pm
Mr Fab:

Now THERE'S an idea for a future episode of this show; "Apocalypse Now"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

There are some pretty iconic speeches in that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Wait ... so harry Dean Stanton and Hunter S. Thompson were both Kentuckians? Cool :-)
Avatar 3:39pm
Mr Fab:

Wow, i didn't know that! What happened to their Southern drawl? Did they BOTH have voice coaches?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm
melinda:

Many consider the Midwestern accent to be the most "neutral", so perhaps that's why Harry sounds more like northern Ohio than Kentucky. He did mention in an interview that he consciously changed his accent at some point after leaving Kentucky. The first role I ever saw him in was a movie about Appalachian people so I thought of him that way for a long time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

My money's on the drugs and the alcohol ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm
melinda:

It's not hard to change an accent if you're motivated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Aha! Like Brit actors having to adopt the whole received pronunciation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm
Jan Turkenburg:

amazing show, GG!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm
melinda:

Having a Kentucky accent would really limit your role options, especially back then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Thank you, lovely! :-)
  3:44pm
Martinibomb:

same here digging it. I love painting/drawing/art while I'm listening the most.. but then I don't chat so much it's a trade off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Is it like in the UK where regional accents are equated with less intelligent/less able?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Glad I'm inspiring you, MB! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm
melinda:

@GG yes, definitely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

And then The Beatles made regional accents cool ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm
melinda:

Southern accents especially.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Plus your Michael Caines and your Terence Stamps etc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Nearly at the end of this week's show, so don't forget to stay listening for the wonderful Martinibomb and Medium Cool coming up next!
  3:52pm
Martinibomb:

That's right I am next. Big thanks to Dj GeorgyGirl! Some fantastic music this week as always.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm

Thank you, lovely! Looking forward to your show! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm
