A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

The guy had a good life he lived way longer than most people. And wow his studio was kinda impressive.. was looking thru some documentarys/interviews he was an impressive fellow. Colors first album I bought at Tower Records Beaverton when I first moved here

Hi Linda Lee! Glad to see you here!
Avatar 7:04pm
Linda Lee:

i feel as if Ken's voice is one of the threads running through my time.
Avatar 7:05pm
Mr Fab:

Martinibomb, "Colors" was one of the LAST albums I bought on vinyl from the late great Rhino Records store.
Avatar 7:05pm
Linda Lee:

wouldn't miss it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm
Rich in Washington:

Oh man. The Beaverton Tower was my mecca as a teenager!
  7:06pm
Martinibomb:

got my copy of Joe Meeks' I hear a new world there too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm
Rich in Washington:

I know what you mean, LL. His voice was everywhere in my youth, so by the time I first heard his Word Jazz program, it was amazing.
  7:07pm
Martinibomb:

I never got to shop at Rhino tho an old roommate ended up working there for awhile
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm
Rich in Washington:

There was one dude who worked that store, and if it had his scrawled 'RECOMMENDED!' on the label, I knew I had to buy it.
  7:08pm
Martinibomb:

Really? You got to hear Nordine when you were a kid? Yeah I just walked into tower and it was there and I thought hmm.. this looks interesting
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm
Rich in Washington:

My copies of these records are really 'well loved'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm
Rich in Washington:

Yeah. OPB ran Word Jazz in the late 70s and KBOO also played the Now Nordine program. We just found some Ken reel to reels in storage that got sent to him last year, which apparently he didn't have them.
Avatar 7:09pm
Mr Fab:

Nordine really was one of the last surviving figures from the original Beat era, wasn't' he?
Avatar 7:09pm
Linda Lee:

i grew up in nyc in the 60s & 70s, sure i heard him on public radio..
Avatar 7:10pm
Linda Lee:

not sure how you'd hear him outside metro areas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm
Rich in Washington:

I guess he was. How's Ferlinghetti doing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm
Rich in Washington:

Good thing we disabled that dead air thingamajig
  7:11pm
Martinibomb:

@Linda yeah you wouldn't i grew up in the woods so... had a lot to learn when I moved to a metro. always feel ike I'm trying to catch up still.. hahah
Avatar 7:11pm
Mr Fab:

Oh yeah, Ferlinghetti's still hanging in there, City Lights Books protected by the San Fran government I believe against development into condos
Avatar 7:11pm
Linda Lee:

i know i am! no such animal i suspect :-)
  7:12pm
Martinibomb:

I didn't even know who Kraftwerk was hah
Avatar 7:13pm
Linda Lee:

i hope i never catch up really..
did hear kraftwerk on the radio in junior high. we thought they were hilarious.
  7:13pm
Martinibomb:

I think I have an outsider's ear because of where I was raised tho.. so not all bad
Avatar 7:13pm
Mr Fab:

I gotta lot of respect for the small-town kids who worked to get hep. I didn't have to do anything really, was just around me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm
Rich in Washington:

Radio and later zines and magazines were my lifeline. And later record mail order catalogs. I was really fortunate to have a really weird radio station, KBOO, within earshot.
Avatar 7:15pm
Linda Lee:

i feel the same way, growing up in ny *but* of course you have to seek things out that will really interest you. not everything will.
  7:16pm
Martinibomb:

I think there were 50 people in my highschool if that gives you an idea
Avatar 7:16pm
Linda Lee:

nice! that's nice.
  7:17pm
Martinibomb:

the only thing that saved me were used bookstores.. like who's this Martin Denny guy.. yeah I kinda like this stuf.. Lol
Avatar 7:18pm
Linda Lee:

people who say we don't need libraries or bookstores really don't know what they're talking about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm
Rich in Washington:

There was something like 1500 in my high school but most were dullards.
Avatar 7:18pm
grantbob:

Yes... Martin Denny and Lex Baxter were a gateway.
  7:19pm
Martinibomb:

@Rich my wife grew up in Vancouver and has fond memories of KBOO
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm
Rich in Washington:

Oh wow! I had no idea, Martinbomb! That's cool!
Avatar 7:21pm
Linda Lee:

i attended an arts high school in nyc ~ by senior year i sort of stopped going & went into the streets.
  7:21pm
Martinibomb:

I could kinda get Souther Oregon state college radio with Dr. Demento from time to time if conditions were right.. AM waves can travel far
Avatar 7:21pm
Don-O:

Zines seemed to be my gateway to a lot of this....then I discovered KXLU-FM in L. A., then I discovered Factsheet Five in Tower Records then it went on from there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm
Rich in Washington:

Yes. I think we can all trace our musical weirdness to the good Doctor.
Avatar 7:22pm
Don-O:

Speaking of KXLU, there was and still is Molotov Cocktail Hour! I still listen to them.
Avatar 7:22pm

Picture windows. Who knows what those are, anymore?

Avatar 7:23pm
Linda Lee:

should i confess right here that i've never heard dr demento? :-)
Avatar 7:24pm
Don-O:

I remember listening to the Doctor and his old four hour show on KMET. I got my first taste of Leon Redbone, Tom Waits and Zappa.
Avatar 7:24pm
Otis Fodder:

The good Dr. D, network of the Sub-G, and thrift stores were my gateway in the mid-late 80s. However, did not get into Nordine fully until mid-1990s when Colors was reissued on CD, then I was like, why did I bypass those Word Jazz LPs in bins before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
Rich in Washington:

HA! No worries, LL! Maybe it was a weird adolescent boy thing. He can sort of polarize people.
  7:25pm
Martinibomb:

@Otis yup! That's the CD I picked up.. I mentioned earlier first purchase at Tower Records beaverton
Avatar 7:25pm
Linda Lee:

my own life was demented enough, apparently :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm
Rich in Washington:

I fairly recently bought this really cheap Nordine collection off Amazon (not this one) and it had most of his early records EXCEPT Colors. I was sort of mad, then looked for it online and it was by then out of print again and expensive. Then not a week later, I went to a Salvation Army and found a new CD of Colors for a buck. SO weird.
Avatar 7:27pm
Don-O:

Well, Dr. D just put out that Punk CD set.
Avatar 7:28pm
Linda Lee:

this vidiot thing is very amusing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm
Rich in Washington:

This is one of my favorite pieces by him.
Avatar 7:29pm
Mr Fab:

Dr D, like Mad Magazine, tapped into a smart - or at least, a smart-ass - youth's first sense that the adult world was preposterous, so feel free to laugh at it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm
Rich in Washington:

My whole family was raised on Mad Magazine. My parents would read it first and then it would get passed down the line.
Avatar 7:31pm
Linda Lee:

loved Mad as a kid, for sure. loved it visually!
Avatar 7:33pm
Otis Fodder:

Time seems to move slow with Ken. Only 30 minutes, but it seems much longer and in this case, this is a VERY good thing.
Avatar 7:34pm
Linda Lee:

it is. absolutely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
Rich in Washington:

I used magic time compression technology.
  7:35pm
Martinibomb:

agreed!
Avatar 7:35pm
Otis Fodder:

Whatever you are doing, keep doing.
Avatar 7:36pm
Linda Lee:

just decided: the next cat who adopts me will be named Ken Nordine.
Avatar 7:36pm
βrian:

Ooh, those brushes on the high hat! That mellifluous voice!
Avatar 7:37pm
Mr Fab:

ha, this is like one of those cheesy spoken word celebrity records
Avatar 7:38pm
Linda Lee:

interesting to hear his 'off mike' voice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm
Rich in Washington:

I hope the cat has the voice for it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm
Rich in Washington:

We briefly adopted a stray tom that I insisted on calling Early Tom Waits because of his deep, broken up meowl. No one else would call him that.
Avatar 7:41pm
Linda Lee:

wouldn't that be sweet!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm
Rich in Washington:

This thing is just a mic check but it's amazing.
Avatar 7:42pm
Linda Lee:

brilliant! Early Tom Waits! :-)
Avatar 7:42pm
βrian:

Was it true that Early Tom Waits for no man?
Avatar 7:42pm
Linda Lee:

yes, beautiful mic check.
Avatar 7:43pm
Mr Fab:

he was an Early Tomcat?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm
Rich in Washington:

We eventually found him a home with friends who had less cats than us, so, he didn't wait too long.
Avatar 7:45pm
Linda Lee:

my kinda crowd. more & less cats.
Avatar 7:48pm
βrian:

"Fewer cats," insists my grammarous beloved.

But more cats is preferrable to less cats, in any case. Just ask Colette.
Avatar 7:48pm
Otis Fodder:

Really nice wide retrospect Rich! Thannnnnnnnks (in a long Nordine voice).
Avatar 7:48pm
Linda Lee:

thank you for the show, Rich! everything's set right again.
Avatar 7:48pm
Linda Lee:

it is fewer cats, but who's countin?
  7:49pm
Martinibomb:

when are we going to start the, "Pets Of Sheena's Jungle" fan page?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
Rich in Washington:

Yay! Glad I could set SOMETHING right!
Avatar 7:49pm
βrian:

Thanks, @RIW. I shall revisit this show and share it with fellow Nordine Nerds.
Avatar 7:49pm
Otis Fodder:

Whaaaaat, I'll start taking pictures of my cat. When, when?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm
Rich in Washington:

Thanks, Otis!
Avatar 7:50pm
Linda Lee:

how does the 80s work sound dated, but the earlier stiff doesn't? got to be the instrumentation!
Avatar 7:50pm

"Night Music" cool show. used to VHS it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm

I took a picture of my boy kitty Tigger playing with my turntables and I occasionally see it pop up on the web. It's kind of funny.
Avatar 7:54pm
Mr Fab:

yeah, that would be Dave Sanborn...still, they really did have a lot of great guests on that show
Avatar 7:54pm
Linda Lee:

Tigger! where can we see him Rich?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm
Rich in Washington:

Just an amazing show. I would just watch dumbfounded that it was on network television. The Residents and Conway Twitty.
