Good people! Come on in. Just making sure that all of the knife blades face towards the plates, and counting butter plates, and crisping napkins, etc.

When I was foreman on a jury in LA, I did talk to the prevailing attorney, a young guy, after the verdict. Might have been his first trial. I pointed out that the only reason he won was because his opponent, a jerk-off old guy who obviously didn't give two shits for his plaintiffs, was so incompetent. Borderline malpractice.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:34pm

we ate pb&j sandwiches practically every day for years. despite seeing tv ads forever my mother never bought marshmallow fluff and when we asked about it she said it was terrible. she probably had never tasted it. then one of my sisters had it at a friend's house when we were maybe 10-12 and convinced my mother to buy it and we all loved it.
  10:34pm
Dean:

When we read the verdict, the judge stared at us and curled his eyebrows as if to say, "Are you people that stupid?" Thanks, your fucking honor, for your concern at this stage of the trial. What a consummate dick.

Heh, I, too, am in the business of cat separation, having recently moved my mom's cat here from SoCal. (Moved my mom, too.) We already had one cat. I say let them duke it out, but the rest of my family doesn't want to have to clean up the mayhem.

i eat almond butter & jelly (or similar) on ricecakes fairly often, and i keep peanut butter in the house for cooking (and sometimes for apples...and sometimes for mouse bait)

I've tried to like liver but it just doesn't work. I used to find goat dairy products gross but lately I've been enjoying goat cheese, though. I've talked to people who can't taste the difference between cow and goat, which suggests that we're just not tasting the same things.

Dean:

Huh?! Capers?! I love capers, and I probably work too hard to find any dish where I can add them. Really, what's not to like?

I *love* liver.

I get the "hard wired" stuff, but only to a point, because I believe it's possible to sway folks to enjoy things they thought they didn't enjoy (perhaps due to "hard wiring"). But of course this begs the question. Maybe they're only hard-wired not generally to prefer something that they might otherwise tolerate or even like.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
melinda:

Organ meats used to be standard fare in earlier times, I wonder if we'd been forced to eat them a taste for it would have evolved? My mom would sometimes order liver and onions at the local cafeteria and I would ask for a bite since the onions made it smell good, and it still tasted like shit.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
melinda:

@Dean it is possible to change tastes, to a point. But we're not all starting from the same point in terms of what we're sensitive to, in terms of taste and texture. Agree about capers, they really liven up many things.

we got liver and tongue and kidneys for next to nothing and steak several times/week but it was full of grizzle and fat.

we had to eat everything on our plates or we may not leave the table. (and she filled our plates)

I don't buy it, melinda. Of course I don't know what each person experiences, but I do know what the components of each food are. Folks with unusual conditions are by definition...unusual.

I, too, give the benefit of the doubt, but that's because I can't possibly know for sure. However, the experience of food doesn't boil down to how an individual experiences it at one moment. Maybe today I can't stomach liver, but tomorrow I can. Our tastes change over relatively short periods of time. (Relative, that is, to the the longer timelines that pertain to evolution.)
