Hi, folks. Good morning. Let me know how the show is sounding? I'm in Studio C today, at WFMU proper, and just getting reacquainted with the levels etc.
Avatar Sun. 1/20/19 9:00am duke:

Hello Jeff and D:O folks
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 9:01am Granny Spicy Tuna:

hello and howdy, all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 9:01am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Sounds like the Matt Warwick alarm still works
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 9:01am Jeff Golick:

Hey @duke! @Granny Spicy Tuna!
Avatar Sun. 1/20/19 9:01am hyde:

you sounded a tad loud there, tbh
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 9:02am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @hyde. HELLO!
Avatar Sun. 1/20/19 9:03am TDK60:

Studio C, eh? from WFMU Towers? Morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 9:07am Jeff Golick:

That's the place, @TDK60! At least I think so.
Avatar Sun. 1/20/19 9:07am TDK60:

>online "broadcast" report> your voice is ok. // MLK weekend; I'm honored to have heard him speak (crowd too big to see him) on April 15, 1967.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 9:09am Jeff Golick:

Thanks. and WOW, @TDK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 9:09am Uncle Michael:

How is your morgen? My morgen is gut.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 9:10am Uncle Michael:

What brought you to Studio C, Jeff? I know it wasn't PATH.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 9:11am Jeff Golick:

Heh. Guten morgen, @UM. What brought me here was an apartment full of 18-yr-old college students. (We got ours home this weekend, plus two he invited along.)
Avatar Sun. 1/20/19 9:12am hyde:

i'm really looking forward to going out to shovel four inches of sodden slushsnow in a bit
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 9:12am Uncle Michael:

Oh dear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 9:15am Jeff Golick:

I don't recall having seen anyone eat a donut and a piece of pizza on the same place before, but I'm here to tell you that it can be done.
Avatar Sun. 1/20/19 9:16am hyde:

@JG ah, youth
Avatar Sun. 1/20/19 9:19am duke:

I'm really enjoying these different versions of Alabama. Coltrane is the master though. Something about that tone that can't be matched.
Avatar Sun. 1/20/19 9:20am TDK60:

..if Martin were here today, he would see that his "long arc of history leading to justice" is a lot longer than he might have supposed, sadly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 9:20am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, @duke. The drama, the pathos, the soul.
Avatar Sun. 1/20/19 9:23am TDK60:

I once was a guest DJ on a college radio show. I played Trane's Alabama. The student host DJ shocked me by saying: "What is this supposed be, some sort of *protest* jazz?" I took a breath and said, "Yep!" (Geez.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 9:27am Jeff Golick:

Ew. I got similar treatment at my college station, @TDK. My shift was 3-6am. At 6am, the jazz ended and the "college rock" began. Never once did the morning dj who followed me comment about what had gone on before. Though I do recall him snidely remarking once, to me, about some Joe Williams I was playing as he came in...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 9:27am Jeff Golick:

(Not that it's stayed with me, or anything.)
Avatar Sun. 1/20/19 9:28am TDK60:

(you guessed right) the student DJ was of caucasian lineage.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 9:29am Jeff Golick:

Nice to C you, @Doug! No yoga?
  Sun. 1/20/19 9:31am Doug Schulkind:

Yoga, I discovered after having arrived at it’s locked door, was cancelled due to the half-inch of snow paralyzing the region.
Avatar Sun. 1/20/19 9:32am TDK60:

well, Jeff there is some good college radio (WFMU used to be) then there is a lotta...other...college radio. But back to the music..
  Sun. 1/20/19 9:32am Doug Schulkind:

I swear the auto-spellcheck inserted the ‘ in its.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 9:33am Jeff Golick:

(I believe you.)

I thought yinzers were made of stouter stuff?
Avatar Sun. 1/20/19 9:33am TDK60:

Doug, take a deep breath..
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 9:36am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Snowasana?
Avatar Sun. 1/20/19 9:36am Sem:

Hello, and good morning, Jeff, Outsiders, deciders, topsiders, besiders, and all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 9:37am Jeff Golick:

Hello, @Sem! Good to see you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 9:37am Jeff Golick:

Love that Chorale.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 10:13am doctorjazz:

(my phone is at about max volume)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 10:23am Granny Spicy Tuna:

I just want to marvel for a moment that folx are listening to WFMU on their phones. We're living in the future, kids!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 10:24am Granny Spicy Tuna:

And i'm listeing to WFMU from the woods on a little island near the Pacific Ocean.
  Sun. 1/20/19 10:25am Doug Schulkind:

Pretty soon, I bet, we will be able to do our radio shows from our phones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 10:25am Jeff Golick:

Revolutions have started with less, @GST.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 10:26am Jeff Golick:

I keep leaving my phone on trains and in cars. I think my subconscious is trying to tell me something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 10:28am Uncle Michael:

I'm about to leave for Lawrence, KS...which means I may be joining some of the traffic for today's Chiefs/Pats AFC Championship game. Pray for me.
  Sun. 1/20/19 10:29am Dean:

I'm listening on my old AM transistor radio under my pillow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 10:29am Uncle Michael:

I pick up GTDR with one of my fillings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 10:30am Jeff Golick:

Good luck and godspeed, @UM. Gassed up?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 10:32am Jeff Golick:

Hi, @Dean! You're always on the cool side of the pillow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 10:32am Uncle Michael:

I am gassed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 10:32am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Swift, safe travels, Uncle Michael. Say howdy to my original hometown for me!
  Sun. 1/20/19 10:33am Dean:

You should pull a Blazing Saddles, UM. Set up detour and a traffic sign reporting the game is now slated for Foxborough.
Avatar Sun. 1/20/19 10:34am hyde:

woof, back from a-shovelin' in a sleet storm. someone remind me why i live here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 10:36am Uncle Michael:

Dean, I think I'll just paint a tunnel entrance on a rock face.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 10:36am Jeff Golick:

Home is where the sleet is, @hyde.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 10:37am Jeff Golick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 10:38am doctorjazz:

Good luck with the Pick up UM!

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 10:42am Jeff Golick:

Eeeeeaaaaasy now, @doc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 10:42am doctorjazz:

Good trip ,UM!

Avatar Sun. 1/20/19 10:44am hyde:

good luck UM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 10:49am doctorjazz:

This has a bit of the feel of Good Bye Poek Pie Hat
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 10:50am doctorjazz:

No ,it uses the stop fine of Fables of Faubus..
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 10:50am Granny Spicy Tuna:

I had a friend who participated in the Birmingham campaign. She was always on the front lines of social justice, from the Spanish Civil War to the Cuban Missile Crisis to free clinics in San Francisco. Missing her today, she would have loved this set. Blessed be the memory of Ruth Davidow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 10:51am doctorjazz:

... Stop time that is...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 10:51am doctorjazz:

Mingus-y, anyway ..
Avatar Sun. 1/20/19 10:54am TDK60:

..old lefty punkrocker Tom Robinson has a show on BBC 6.
Avatar Sun. 1/20/19 10:54am duke:

I think WFMU is a better value than HBO
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 10:56am doctorjazz:

(I live just fine without HBO, wouldn't live without FMU, at least ,not happily)
  Sun. 1/20/19 10:57am Doug Schulkind:

GTDR Kidz. Do it for the children.
  Sun. 1/20/19 10:59am Listener Gregory:

I'm thinking of having children just so I can expose them to GTDR. However, I wonder if they would rebel and listen to their equivalent of Brittney Spears instead. That would kill me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:01am Jeff Golick:

@Listener Gregory! It's in every child's DNA to reject the music of their parents.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:01am Jeff Golick:

For example, my kids now hate jazz with a red hot passion.
  Sun. 1/20/19 11:03am Dean:

And yet I adore Rachmaninov, Benny Goodman, and Burt Bacharach, thanks to mom and dad.
Avatar Sun. 1/20/19 11:03am TDK60:

..funny if one later finds out, jazz is rebel music, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:04am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, there are counterexamples. I envy them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:05am Brian in UK:

Jewff, have you got a fix for picking up BBC TV programmes in the US?
Avatar Sun. 1/20/19 11:06am hyde:

badmouthing your parents' music when you're a teen is one of life's great pleasures
  Sun. 1/20/19 11:07am Doug Schulkind:

I have resisted every pang and urge to try to lead my daughter to the music of my preference. It remains a work in progress.
Avatar Sun. 1/20/19 11:07am hyde:

it's almost as good as playing music they hate really loud
  Sun. 1/20/19 11:07am Listener Gregory:

So, if I understand correctly, if I expose my children to Brittney Spears against their will, they'll then tune in to GTDR?? I'm not sure I can do it.
  Sun. 1/20/19 11:08am Dean:

My counter-counterexample: I listened now and then to Rod Stewart (Faces) as a kid. "Turn that shit down!" would ensue. Fast forward a decade or two and mom's all, "Isn't he a wonderful singer?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:08am Jeff Golick:

@Brian: I think I do have a Chrome extension that essentially puts me in the UK, so the geo-location limitation is lifted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:09am Jeff Golick:

All I know is, I lost control of the car radio several years ago.
  Sun. 1/20/19 11:10am Doug Schulkind:

As s teen, I would listen to my father describe the experience of seeing Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong in person, and it captivated me.
Avatar Sun. 1/20/19 11:10am TDK60:

sometimes you have to drop a killer cut by surprise..
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:10am Granny Spicy Tuna:

But what about when the parents try to take over the teen's tastes? Hearing my mom singing along with The Smiths in the 80s still haunts me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:12am doctorjazz:

My older daughter is open to most music I love as long as it's not too "out". She plays me her latest rap discovery, which are often pretty cool (I get to be smart when I recognize the music that was sampled). My younger daughter will only listen to punk-pop, metal, maybe some indie (which I can go for except for screamo metal)
Avatar Sun. 1/20/19 11:12am TDK60:

heh heh, Dad doesn't like the screamo..
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:13am Brian in UK:

Never pushed the music in this house but maybe with three girls it is different to sons. Got some mutual favourites though.

Thanks, Jeff.
  Sun. 1/20/19 11:13am Dean:

Same for me with my parents, who caught Billie near the end. Story is my dad had to help her get up to the stage.

I let my kids cultivate their own tastes. I learn from them, they from me. I now enjoy a certain few of the Britney Spears-like crowd these days. And Cardi B?! Swoon!
Avatar Sun. 1/20/19 11:14am hyde:

ok gang, i'm venturing out in the hideous sleet to eat ramen. see you all on the playlists somewhere. thanks JG!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:14am Jeff Golick:

Thanks for being here, @hyde! Safe travels!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:14am Brian in UK:

@Granny, hearing the Smiths has always haunted me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:15am doctorjazz:

My parents were European. .my father generally called what I listened to "Catz music", meaning scratching cats. My mom was hipper, thought Tony Orlando and Dawn was the ultimate!
  Sun. 1/20/19 11:17am Listener Gregory:

In the meantime, Jessica Pavone is really transporting the salt here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:17am Brian in UK:

Swoon was the name of my first..........
Avatar Sun. 1/20/19 11:18am TDK60:

my folks were into extreme noise lo-fi post-rock..
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:19am Jeff Golick:

I protest a bit too much. Like @Dean, I listen pretty attentively to what my kids have on, and sometimes appreciatively.
  Sun. 1/20/19 11:21am Listener Gregory:

Jeff, simply being exposed to music will have an effect. Your kids might not embrace it now, but they won't be afraid of it, the way many people are of music that isn't so catchy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:22am doctorjazz:

I've gone to concerts with my kids. My older daughter loved Richard Thompson (made me happy). I've seen Skillet (Christian Punk... Don't ask )with my younger daughter. They Might Be Giants worked for everyone
  Sun. 1/20/19 11:24am Dean:

Skillet is a band name I wish I'd thought of.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:25am Brian in UK:

Who ever thought that I would buy a Frank Sinatra album. Mind you growing up in the Sixties he was as exciting as Elvis at the same time. The mid-Fifites were peerless for both.
  Sun. 1/20/19 11:26am Dean:

I prefer Dean Martin to Sinatra, but that's just me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:26am Jeff Golick:

Among the (very few) albums I pilfered from my parents were Sinatra, Ella, and "Let It Be" (the only Beatles album in my house growing up).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:26am Jeff Golick:

Wait...does that mean that YOU ARE DEAN MARTIN, @Dean?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:28am doctorjazz:

I Took The Barry Sisters, but just for sentimental reasons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:29am Brian Sinatra:

We can all play that game. Well nearly.
  Sun. 1/20/19 11:29am Dean:

We are all Dean Martin, at least his friends. He is, in fact, my namesake, per my parents.

I just moved my mom out of her house and upstate near us. She has a small collection of vinyl, a number of 78s, LPs, and 45s. I've already appropriated the Bacharach, Jonathan & Darlene Edwards, Johnny Mathis, etc. Will comb through the rest soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:30am doctorjazz:

I've tried to develop a taste for Sinatra, never managed. Now Ella is great! (though I still can't get into her singing 60s rock stuff)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:31am doctorjazz:

Wonderful set ,by the way ...
  Sun. 1/20/19 11:31am Listener Gregory:

Is Bertucci moving the salt accumulations transported by Pavone?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:32am Jeff Golick:

Into the aether, yes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:33am doctorjazz:

Going to see my 102 year old mother in law soon ... She appears to be losing ground, likely not with us much longer .
  Sun. 1/20/19 11:35am Dean:

Born in 1916? Just amazing. Imagine what she has seen and heard. Good for her.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:35am doctorjazz:

This music ,and conversation, triggering all sorts of stuff...
Avatar Sun. 1/20/19 11:36am TDK60:

..my parents had lotsa jazz, also pop- Peggy Lee, J. Mathis, Ray Charles; Harry Belafonte; also: Bernstein conducts Stravinsky's Rite o' Spring -wow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:36am doctorjazz:

Yeah, she did really well, even in her later years, have to say
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:38am Jeff Golick:

But how will future generations judge each other, if not by CD shelves and book spines? Spotify playlists?
Avatar Sun. 1/20/19 11:42am TDK60:

{btw} that Bernstein Rite LP had the coolest album cover:
www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:42am doctorjazz:

Like that Hearing Things and the Pavone, may have to visit Bandcamp (I have that Avishai, like it as well)
  Sun. 1/20/19 11:42am Dean:

We're already beginning to examine our ancestors through a lens of "distant reading" via big data. Thank you, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, for your generous contribution.
  Sun. 1/20/19 11:44am Dean:

Schlegelmilch recently did an album with Jim Black, yes? Perhaps you played a track a week or two ago?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:45am doctorjazz:

Thanks Jeff
Good week all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:47am Jeff Golick:

Yup, good ears, @Dean.

@TDK: that is one grabby cover. Led me to this obit of the artist: www.nytimes.com...
Avatar Sun. 1/20/19 11:50am duke:

Thanks for the great tunes, Jeff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:50am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @doc. Same to you, and hope all goes well with the centenarian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 11:50am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @duke! My pleasure; glad you were along for it.

..thanks for article Jeff! when I first saw that cover I was 7 or 8, had some pre-sexual primitivist imagination going about those pagan Russian tribes. / Thanks for the music.

Lovely morning, lovely sounds. Thank you, Jeff. Glad Destination:OUT is here.

DJ and classical record reviewer Jim Svejda likes to relate that his early classical music collecting habits were "an Excuse for Smuggling Home Soft-Core Pornography" in the form of "the most complete collection of Scheherazade and Belshazzar's Feast recordings possessed by any thirteen-year-old in the world."

Aw thanks, @Sem! A beautiful sentiment. I'm glad you're here!

@Dean: that's fantastic.

Chico Hamilton’s actual first name? Foreststorn.
  Sun. 1/20/19 12:00pm Dean:

Why not judge books and records by their covers? Seems perfectly sensible to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/20/19 12:02pm Jeff Golick:

That comment was useful, @Doug, as it made me realize that I'm actually playing Chico Freeman and not Hamilton.
  Sun. 1/20/19 12:03pm Doug Schulkind:

Which is helpful, because I have been searching like mad for a Hamilton record called The Outside Within.
  Sun. 1/20/19 12:04pm Listener Gregory:

I think I have this Chico Freeman album and haven't listened to it in 20 years. Good reminder.
  Sun. 1/20/19 12:04pm Doug Schulkind:

You did announce Freeman, so all is good. Very good.
  Sun. 1/20/19 12:05pm Listener Gregory:

Excellent show, Jeff... The DeJohnette/dejeuner quip was special.
  Sun. 1/20/19 12:06pm Listener Gregory:

presents/presence!!!
  Sun. 1/20/19 12:06pm Listener Gregory:

The pun gauntlet has been thrown down, Doug.
