Favoriting December 17, 2018: Dava Whisenant, director, "Bathtubs Over Broadway"

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

This week: Dava Whisenant, director of the new documentary "Bathtubs Over Broadway"

Bathtubs Over Broadway, a new documentary that you should definitely watch

Dava Whisenant bio

• On Twitter: @BathtubsOverBwy

• On Twitter: @DavaWhisenant

Songs from industrial musicals, part of the book site for Everything's Coming Up Profits: The Golden Age of Industrial Musicals, by Steve Young and Sport Murphy

• Review of "Bathtubs Over Broadway" in the New Yorker: Can a Musical Sponsored by a Toilet Manufacturer Be a Work of Art? (Nov 27, 2018)

FACEBOOK NEWS

• Another Friday bad-news dump from Facebook: Private photos on Facebook, of millions of users, were accidentally shared with 1,500 apps. Facebook said on Friday it had found a bug that gave as many as 1,500 third-party apps access to the unposted Facebook photos of up to 6.8 million users. (Business Insider, today, Dec 17) ... see also the Washington Post article (Dec 14) and the TechCrunch article (Dec 14).

• via Sarah Frier, this Bloomberg article (today, Dec 17): "Instagram was actually a bigger, and more effective, Russian influence tool than Facebook was, according to data analyzed for Senate Intel. 'More content was created on Instagram, and overall Instagram engagement exceeded that of Facebook.'"

'They don't care': Facebook factchecking in disarray as journalists push to cut ties (Guardian, Dec 13): even journalists paid by Facebook are speaking out against the company. (Meantime, Maria Essa in the Philippines, who has spoken out against Facebook-enabled authoritarian Duterte, was just named one of TIME's People of the Year)

Walt Mossberg on Twitter (today, Dec 17): "Some personal news: I've decided to quit Facebook around the end of the year. I am doing this - after being on Facebook for nearly 12 years - because my own values and the policies and actions of Facebook have diverged to the point where I’m no longer comfortable there. . . . I am also quitting Facebook-owned Instagram and Messenger. I will remain on Twitter, and will continue to communicate via iMessage, email and SMS text with those who have my email address and/or phone number." (You can quit Facebook, too: go to deletefacebook.com.)

GOOGLE NEWS

• In advance of Sundar Pichai's hearings, Matt Stoller posted (Dec 11): "Google is in serious trouble. The company is thuggish, corrupt, and monopolistic. Its employees are upset. Its programmatic advertising is fraud-ridden and Youtube subsidiary is an extremist factory. It has of late, however, hidden behind Mark Zuckerberg, who is far clumsier."

Washington Post recap of Sundar Pichai and Google hearings (Dec 11) ... see also Wired's Issie Lapowski's thread ... also this exchange (courtesy BuzzFeed News, with Monopoly Man in background!) about Project Dragonfly, the censorship-friendly search engine Google wants to build for the Chinese government.

Google’s Secret China Project “Effectively Ended” After Internal Confrontation (The Intercept, today, Dec 17). Looks like Project Dragonfly might be dead.

A "no" sandwich, says Jason Kint:

• Oh, and Google has access to 70% of credit and debit card transactions in the United States through various third party partnerships. Careful when you use a credit card to buy anything that could affect your employment or insurance ratings!

• Oh, and Google Announces New $1 Billion Manhattan Campus In Hudson Square (Gothamist, today, Dec 17). Google now has Chelsea Market, the 2 buildings adjacent, the Hudson River pier next to that, and now a bldg in Tribeca and 2 more in the West Village. And Google's LinkNYC surveillance towers watch every New Yorker. WE NEED ANTITRUST NOW.

• I'm embarrassed for the New York Times, after they did such good work covering Google's ubiquitous surveillance in New York (which I covered on last week's show). Guess who just bought a partnership with the New York Times...

• Get off of Google! Go to nomoregoogle.com for a helpful list of alternative services. See also deletefacebook.com.

AMAZON NEWS

NYC City Council slams Amazon in public hearing about HQ2 (courtesy CNBC's Steve Kopack, Dec 13): "You're worth a trillion dollars. Why do you need our $3B when we have crumbling subways, crumbling public housing, people without healthcare, public schools that are overcrowding? Why do you need our $3B?" Questions are from NYCC Speaker Corey Johnson. (See also Ellie Marshall's comment - this is how extractive industries work.)

Smarter Voice Assistants Recognize Your Favorite Brands—and Health (ACM News, Dec 11): Shocker, home-surveillance devices like Amazon Echo will have negative consequences. "...Alexa responded: 'You've been coughing a lot today. Do you want me to recommend a medicine or some alternative remedies?' ... Snoring and yawning a lot, for instance, could be signs of obstructive sleep apnea, so leaked data might impact somebody's health insurance, or even car insurance rates. A lot of coughing and sneezing might impact employability, too, if somebody seems too sickly too often."

TWITTER NEWS

Jack Dorsey on his Myanmar meditation trip (Dec 11): "I’m aware of the human rights atrocities and suffering in Myanmar. I don’t view visiting, practicing, or talking with the people, as endorsement. ... [but] This was a purely personal trip for me focused on only one dimension: meditation practice." ... except, whoops, Jack Dorsey Reportedly Took A Government-Organized Hot Air Balloon Ride In Myanmar (Dec 14): "Through a spokesperson, the Twitter and Square CEO said he was unaware multiple government agencies were reportedly involved in organizing the flight."

Mother's letter to Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Experian "regarding algorithms and my son's birth" after her son was stillborn. See also David Carroll's response: "Condolences really. But suggesting the solution to this problem is more invasive surveillance to solve the problem of invasive surveillance shows just how abusively conditionned many have become. That it’s her fault she didn’t opt out is insult to injury." ... also links to this BBC piece.

OTHER TECH NEWS

Politico story via past guest Frank Pasquale: "Silicon Valley billionaire Reid Hoffman has teamed up with former Obama administration officials to create an independent — & likely for-profit — database that would store all of the progressive community’s voter data" (Dec 11) - what could possibly go wrong?

Anti-Surveillance Gift Guide by Julie Carrie Wong (Dec 14). "Drones, DNA and data: please don't give the gift of privacy invasion." Don't give Facebook Portal, DNA kits, 'smart' (surveillance) speakers, camera drones, or needless electronics.

I don't remember how Jean P. Shepherd got involved with industrials; I'm sure he explained it, but I forgot. Anyway, he was the first I heard play recorded excerpts from industrials. I remember one bit with the patients singing about how they enjoyed their appendectomy and hysterectomy while wearing a disposable surgical gown. Shep explained that all of this is tongue in cheek, because how else can you be entertaining and sell at the same time? Because of the type of audience, you can come off to them in ways you wouldn't dare to the general public.

I find it interesting that there is a kind of opposite trickle-down effect with regards to art and industry. When the average CEO made 12 times what the average worker made, artists were proud of their work, and saw it as a means of keeping up their chops and maybe experimenting with some new concepts. Now, with the CEO making, what was it she said, 300 times what the average worker makes? It's another gilded age, and artists who work on that scale, I'm assuming have little creative control, and would not be proud of that work. They'd be seen as a shill by their fans, and probably see themselves in that way as well.

This has happened to the entire film industry, as well as comicbooks. Too much money at stake kills creative risk.
