@linda: I'm sure someone with some actual musical theory can explain it better, but from my understanding, each raga provides a structure that allows musicians to improvise within. Also, there are scales and intervals that characterize each raga. It's a lifelong study for musicians. Huge question you asked!

Coincidentally, I just looked at a 2018 best albums article in the new yorker and this album (doug paisley) was on it. I was a bit surprised at how fmu-friendly that list was. ( www.newyorker.com... )
