Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 11/30/18 9:42am Doug Schulkind:

That George W. Johnson track from 1894 mentioned "darkies" in the lyrics. It's actually very hard to find a "laughing" record from the late 19th/early 20th century that doesn't use the N-word.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 11/30/18 9:45am Doug Schulkind:

Probably a ridiculous statement. It was hard FOR ME.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 11/30/18 9:59am Funky16Corners:

Doug, was the Count Jim Moriary produed by George Martin?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 11/30/18 10:05am Rich in Washington:

Hands up who was forced to watch Hee Haw as a kid but now inexplicably like it as an adult?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 11/30/18 10:07am Funky16Corners:

I loved both Hee Haw and Soul Train as a kid. Whatever was on Saturday morning...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 11/30/18 10:10am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
Coulda been. The Count came from your side of the drink.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 11/30/18 10:11am Doug Schulkind:

Hey, Rich in Washington! Yeah, I loved Hee Haw both as a youth and then later as a unsuitably snide hipster ironist adult.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 11/30/18 10:12am Doug Schulkind:

Here's the lineup on this Carla Bley gem:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 11/30/18 10:26am Funky16Corners:

Indeed. He was telling me about seeing Woody Herman's band in the mid-to-late 40s in NYC. Probably saw the Fpur Brothers band
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 11/30/18 10:28am Doug Schulkind:

I once interviewed Woody Herman and pissed him off so bad (when he misinterpreted a question I asked), he basically grunted yes or no answers for the rest of our time until it was mercifully over.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 11/30/18 10:34am Uncle Michael:

  Fri. 11/30/18 10:39am Dean:

I've been keeping an eye out for Woody Herman recordings on which Alan Broadbent appears. I find albums with tracks arranged by Broadbent, but not much where he plays piano, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 11/30/18 10:43am Jeff Golick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 11/30/18 10:50am Doug Schulkind:

Maybe not such a bad thing, chresti. It was a little, let's say "unsettling."
  Fri. 11/30/18 10:50am Dean:

Billboard magazine from May 14, 1949, includes a sidebar headed, "Burp Concerto," but it recounts how a radio announcer promising listeners that they were about to hear "the finest [classical] music known to man" was then followed by the Pepsi Cola jingle.

Due to bad OCR work, two titles scanned at HathiTrust referring to one or another of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos read "-burg" as "burp."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 11/30/18 10:51am Doug Schulkind:

@Doug: You can be my caretaker in a few years. Alzheimers runs in the family, and I'm pretty sure I have CTE (I was/am a stupid kid/adult and did really dumb stuff as an athlete as a youth).

Hello, northguineahills. Have we met?
  Fri. 11/30/18 11:22am Dean:

It was contrasted with "meatspace," the implication being that meatspace is palpable, tangible, virtual space not so much. But you learn real fast when pulling Ethernet or fiber, and setting up routers, switches, and firewalls, just how non-virtual is this brave new-ish world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 11/30/18 11:22am Brian in UK:

Doug, we've been watching my poor sister-in-law slowly lose her short term memory over the last few years. When we saw her the other day, she was at the point where she wasn't sure who we were (me, Bill, his brother or my other sister-in-law). But her childhood memories so far are still intact. She's got the early onset dementia. It's extremely heartbreaking.

I like to rhyme "airport" with "cut your hair short," and "clambake" with "hambone."

You can say that again, @chresti. I'm preparing to move my mother from Southern California to a senior living site near me. For a 91YO, she is doing relatively well, "high functioning," as a geriatric specialist once remarked to me. Still, cognition and memory decline, sometimes gradually, sometimes precipitously, and sometimes the results are not heartbreaking, but hilarious. For instance, not long ago she referred to my kids, Olivia and Sebastian, as Loretta and Sinbad. I mean, that's gold!
