Hello David and fellow passengers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/23/18 4:13pm David D:

Good evening, Stanley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/23/18 4:15pm Rich in Washington:

Oh good god.. The Éthiopiques series is up to 30 volumes. The completist in me gives up. I've only ever gotten the first five.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/23/18 4:17pm David D:

Rich, I hear you - they put out so much great stuff.
Avatar Tue. 10/23/18 4:26pm northguineahills:

As a kid, Ouagadougou was my favorite city to say out loud (yes, I was weird, even back then).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/23/18 4:27pm David D:

NGH: It is a capital name!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/23/18 4:31pm Carmichael:

At first glance, I thought this song was by GWAR.
Avatar Tue. 10/23/18 4:32pm northguineahills:

Yep! At age 5, I memorized all of the state capitals, at age 7, all of the world capitals, age 13, I drew all of the world flags, and my parents put them all over the kitchen. It was a bit visually noisy. Now, my best recent achievement is listening to WFMU
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/23/18 4:32pm David D:

Carmichael: Yes, they had a sort of phase...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/23/18 4:33pm David D:

NGH: You and I will have to talk sometime...
Avatar Tue. 10/23/18 4:34pm northguineahills:

@Rich: Until last week, I lost track at 22, then Scott played something from 30, and like you, I went, "i want to, but I just can't".
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/23/18 4:35pm Michael 98145:

likey this
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/23/18 4:39pm David D:

Welcome Michael!
Avatar Tue. 10/23/18 4:43pm northguineahills:

damn, i thought it Sido was Equatorial Guinean, not bissauen-guinean, I fail as a guinea.
Avatar Tue. 10/23/18 4:44pm northguineahills:

must be the different Portuguese accent.
  Tue. 10/23/18 4:44pm melinda:

I'm a non-completist and I'm ok with that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/23/18 4:45pm Carmichael:

Sometimes I'm a non-starter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/23/18 4:48pm Webhamster Henry:

Kind of a hop from Berlin last week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/23/18 4:49pm David D:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/23/18 4:56pm Stanley:

Friends, this is where I have to get off. I've got a horribly early rise to catch a plane to Toulouse.Loving the show and will dive the archive later.
A la prochaine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/23/18 5:01pm Michael 98145:

Toulouse@! have a good trip.
Avatar Tue. 10/23/18 5:05pm northguineahills:

The borders of Gambia were given to the British as the French controlled Senegal. The borders in the treaty were written that the British can have any land from the banks of the Gambia River, the distance a cannon could be fired in 1856.
Avatar Tue. 10/23/18 5:06pm northguineahills:

oh, the horror, Stanley, not Toulouse (jelly)!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/23/18 5:08pm Michael 98145:

It's so weird to think how the Western -powers- expected to just chew up the world.
Avatar Tue. 10/23/18 5:10pm northguineahills:

Jeese, I just have work road trip to my company's HQ on the Space Coast Friday, and then meeting the sibling and parents for an american football game in Jacksonville on Saturday. (would prefer Toulouse).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/23/18 5:10pm David D:

Thanks, Stanley and bon voyage!
Avatar Tue. 10/23/18 5:14pm northguineahills:

Most of the world's (but not all) weird border problems can be traced to Euro-colonialism. My favorite border ares are Belgium/Netherlands (they were drunk when they came up w/ that, there are minuscule exclaves everywhere, India and Bangledesh (meta-enclaves), and Armernia and Azerbaijan (more meta-enclaves, but w/ bloodier results). The last example came from the chaos of the disintegration of the Russian and Ottoman Empires at the end of WWI/
Avatar Tue. 10/23/18 5:15pm northguineahills:

Can't go wrong w/ Beninese funk.....
Avatar Tue. 10/23/18 5:18pm northguineahills:

or, other crappy borders, from the lack of European colonial powers planning for the their territories independence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/23/18 5:21pm Michael 98145:

i'm sure they never really intended to end their -civilizing- influence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/23/18 5:24pm David D:

Yes, many of the current borders date back to the 1885 Berlin Conference, a lot of it completely arbitrary.
Avatar Tue. 10/23/18 5:26pm northguineahills:

Yep, the The Berlin Conference (1885, Africa) and the Sykes-Picot Agreement (1916, Middle East) accounts for a good portion of civil strife on this planet to this day.
  Tue. 10/23/18 5:26pm Tamar:

A combination of arbitrary and deliberative. Divide and conquer-- works for the conquerers, in the short term, at least. Hi David, great show! Too bad I can't keep listening on my commute home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/23/18 5:30pm David D:

Tamar - yes, very much so. And the mess continues on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/23/18 5:30pm David D:

Oh and thanks - and have a smooth commute home!
Avatar Tue. 10/23/18 5:41pm northguineahills:

Avatar Tue. 10/23/18 5:48pm northguineahills:

Congo Mania!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/23/18 5:51pm David D:

Yes, thanks again Mark for that and all that you do!
Avatar Tue. 10/23/18 5:57pm northguineahills:

If you want to see a depressing movie, I suggest Lumumba. It details how the US/British?Belgians/South Africans/Soviets messed around w/ Congo-Kinshasa and how the CIA gave the South Africans, tacit approval to assassinate Lumumba (his nickname) in 1965, the first democratically elected president of Congo-Kinshasa. That allow Mobuto Sese Seko to gain office which he held until being overthrown in 1997... en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/23/18 5:59pm David D:

NGH: Yes that sounds interesting and quite possibly depressing.
  Tue. 10/23/18 6:02pm melinda:

@ngh I remember that film.
Avatar Tue. 10/23/18 6:03pm northguineahills:

here's the imdb: www.imdb.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/23/18 6:04pm David D:

There is a Lumumbastraße here in Leipzig, by the way.
  Tue. 10/23/18 6:05pm melinda:

Also have a book of Lumumba-related art from an exhibit at Dartmouth.
Avatar Tue. 10/23/18 6:08pm northguineahills:

Sounds Angolan....

wow, melinda!
  Tue. 10/23/18 6:10pm melinda:

Since I'm all about pictures I don't know that I've ever read the text closely, I'll have to bust out the book when I get home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/23/18 6:10pm David D:

Melinda: Is the art from the region or more global?
Avatar Tue. 10/23/18 6:11pm northguineahills:

  Tue. 10/23/18 6:13pm melinda:

@David pretty sure it's all local.

Avatar Tue. 10/23/18 6:25pm northguineahills:

Belgium, making other Euro-colonial masters look sane and humane....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/23/18 6:30pm David D:
