I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Mayuko, I saw that Sanbaso performance two days ago. I really liked the music, and even the "dance" part was nice, despite the old age of the performer (Mansaku Nomura). He might be 86, but I'm not sure I could move as well (he even jumped). He had trouble with one hand, but this wasn't an issue

@fred woww! I'm jealous! Never seen that kind of performance live before. The tickets for those traditional performances in Japan were always damn too expensive for me.
I think it's often considered in Japan that it's only when you are super old in your 80's you reach the level of perfection as an artist, so it makes sense that he's doing great.

Sounding great! Oh wow, I definitely want to go to Japan someday but first I think I'll try some easier/cheaper places. Maybe Taiwan or Malaysia this fall. Airfare is actually cheaper to Asia than it was 10 years ago!

Hello radio brother Scraps!
Avatar 1:26pm

@Ike Really? Flight to Japan is still so expensive! Was aiming to go there in July but Oct turned out to be much more manageable... Would love to go to Southeast Asia too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm
fred:

I missed the past 20 minutes or so because of a pollster call. I didn't hang up because it was about radio, and I enjoyed when the guy called his supervisor to ask how he should record WFMU (the answer: web radio, wmfu.org). My answers were either WFMU or No (to "did you listen to one of the following station"). Confusing a pollster is fun, but I'll have to hit the archives

@Mayuko: do you plan to go to Okinawa? I think you can get very cheap flights there when you book a ticket to Japan from the US
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm

(Although it's hard to avoid the shady Chinese airlines in the travel search engine results. I guess they're helping to drive the prices down overall, but I've heard bad things about them.)

@fred yup! I have a couple of record stores I wanna go there and hopefully be back with stuff to do singles going steady with!

Today’s show reminds me of a feeling I had often as a kid who spent a lot of time in the ocean at the beach. Coming home and sitting on the sofa but still feeling the push and pull of the waves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm
fred:

I look forward to hearing that! I wish I could go there myself
But that's such poor timing on my side: I'll be seeing Uzbek singer Yulduz Turdieva next Saturday, but I hope I can catch the second half of your show. And that Sunday I'll see Ulzhan Baibussinova again; I love her voice (she's from Kazakhstan)

@Joe I don't even remember seeing any woman in that video?! Other than that voice of mom reading that letter? I heard that that was the first time Wesley Snipes was on screen. So I guess it's an important video on many levels!
