Good morning Jeff and all heading out
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 9:01am Jeff Golick:

Hey, there, hi, there, @listener james and @fred! Welcome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 9:05am fred:

There's also another storm in Asia that doesn't look fun either
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 9:06am Jeff Golick:

Oh, that's right. Philippines?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 9:07am fred:

It hit there, now I think it pummeled Hong Kong and is headed for Southern China
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 9:08am Andrew Waterloo:

good morning
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 9:08am Scraps:

h’lo
  Sun. 9/16/18 9:09am Listener Gregory:

Hey, Jeff. Here from the beginning, if listening from the shower counts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 9:10am Jeff Golick:

C'mon in, @Andrew Waterloo! @Scraps! @Listener Gregory! Oh, it counts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 9:15am Scraps:

I wanted to listen from the first minute, and I wish I did. Does the count?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 9:16am Scraps:

=that= count?
  Sun. 9/16/18 9:17am Listener Gregory:

I like to hear the show in a state of bodily and mental purity.

I got half.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 9:18am Jeff Golick:

@Scraps: you come pre-counted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 9:19am Jeff Golick:

@LG: you set a high bar. I'm just glad my computer rebooted ok.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 9:19am Scraps:

Yay!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 9:22am Jeff Golick:

Just noticing that a copy of this Stark Reality LP has sold for more than $1,100 at Discogs.com.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 9:25am Scraps:

Some damn oligarch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 9:27am listener james from westwood:

Ooh, like this Blind Man Walking.
  Sun. 9/16/18 9:35am Doug Schulkind:

Good morning, Jeff and all large-eared outdwellers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 9:40am Jeff Golick:

@Doug! Good morning.
Sun. 9/16/18 9:40am Gary via app:

Presumably this means we won’t see you at the Brooklyn Book Fair?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 9:41am Brian in UK:

What-ho Jeff and listeners.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 9:41am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Gary! Still thinking about it, for the afternoon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 9:41am Jeff Golick:

Ahoy, @Brian in UK!
Sun. 9/16/18 9:42am Gary via app:

Every year we plan to be there at 10 am when it opens; every year we leave home after 10 am
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 9:43am Jeff Golick:

Yes, well, @Gary. I can't really comment on timeliness. Not my bailiwick. I fear crowds this year; it's becoming quite a thing.
  Sun. 9/16/18 9:44am Doug Schulkind:

Remember the old (and possibly still extent) New York Is Book Country publishing street fair in Manhattan? I once appeared at it wearing a skin-tight faux Superman costume with a large “F” on the front. I was representing the publisher I worked for, Facts On File.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 9:44am Brian in UK:

Is the BBF selling old, new, rare?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 9:45am Jeff Golick:

@Doug: I remember! That's hysterical. I'm looking at three NYIBC posters that are awaiting hanging here, '86, '88, and the never-happened '01.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 9:46am fred:

@Doug: I hope you were well compensated for that stunt. You know that pics are bound to come up at some point (though maybe you didn't know then)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 9:46am Brian in UK:

Doug, have you still got the 'outfit'? Could enhance your djing, not that it is not already super, man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 9:49am Jeff Golick:

@Brian: it's mostly new...with a growing list of events/speakers/"conversations". hyperallergic.com... (for some reason, the festival site itself isn't loading for me)
  Sun. 9/16/18 9:50am Doug Schulkind:

The outfit was rented (I affixed then removed the big felt “F” before returning it). I do, however, have photographic evidence of the affair. Probably my single most mockable historical artifact according to my daughter.
  Sun. 9/16/18 9:52am Doug Schulkind:

Now I have to get back to my current mockable employment situation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 9:53am Jeff Golick:

Cheers, @Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 9:53am Jeff Golick:

I long for the day when you put D:O Radio on the PA system at work. Presumably your last day.
  Sun. 9/16/18 9:53am Listener Gregory:

This Jason Robinson has distinct tinges of "Speak Low" to my ear.
  Sun. 9/16/18 10:04am Dean:

'twas Scraps on August 26.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 9/16/18 10:04am Sem:

Good morning, Jeff, and jello to the OUT crowd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 10:05am Jeff Golick:

@LG: I think I can hear that.

@Dean: Hellos and welcome! Thanks for the nudge, too.

@Sem: How do!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 10:05am Jeff Golick:

And @Scraps: thanks for the Bley suggestion!
Sun. 9/16/18 10:07am Gary via app:

You just reminded me of my favorite NY housing complex name: http://cdn.journalism.cuny.edu/blogs.dir/363/files/2011/11/bland-houses.jpeg
  Sun. 9/16/18 10:07am Listener Gregory:

I listened to the Amarcord Nina Rota album so much when it came out that this is now what I think the Rota originals sounded like. Who knew he wrote for Bill Frisell and Steve Lacy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 10:08am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, one's sense of who made what can be warped by those first encounters, @LG

@Gary: ha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 10:10am doctorjazz:

Hey all! Can only hang for a short time. Great to hear some Carla Bley while I'm here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 10:12am Jeff Golick:

Greetings, @doctorjazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 9/16/18 10:14am Sem:

Jeff, here it is a race to get the tomatoes, garlic, onions, basil ,and flat leaf parsley from the garden transformed into rough sauce and stored, for as we know, winter is coming.
Again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 10:15am fred:

@Gary: There's a row of apartment buildings not too far from where I live called "résidence des crocheteurs", which would translate as something like "lockpicker estates"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 10:16am Jeff Golick:

@Sem: Shhh. Shhhhh. (Though save me some of that sauce, wouldja?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 9/16/18 10:18am Sem:

I'll send a quart as an attactment in an email.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 10:18am Jeff Golick:

Thank you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 10:19am Brian in UK:

I am my avatar.

Sem I tried that with some of Lili's chili relish. Messy business.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 10:21am fred:

Last week somebody asked how many WFMU T-shirts I had. I said about 50, but then I counted them. I have 96. Even I think that calls my sanity into question
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 10:21am Jeff Golick:

!!!!!
Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 10:27am Listener Robert:

I hope they weren't themselves over the hill!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 10:29am Jeff Golick:

Hi, @Listener Robert!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 9/16/18 10:30am Sem:

Haha, Brian.

Almost obsessive, @fred. Almost.
  Sun. 9/16/18 10:30am Listener Gregory:

Is Lost in the Stars another Hal Willner production?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 10:31am Jeff Golick:

@LG: Yep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 10:32am Jeff Golick:

Lou Reed does "September Song" on this record.
  Sun. 9/16/18 10:35am Dean:

"96 T-Shirts" almost sounds like a song title.
  Sun. 9/16/18 10:37am Dean:

"Honkey Donkey" is a song on Isotope's first album, 1974.
  Sun. 9/16/18 10:39am Dean:

(Come to think of it, @Jeff G., you should slip some Isotope into the playlist now and then. Fusion-y, but enduring stuff.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 10:43am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @Dean. I only have one Isotope album, Illusion. I'll give it a spin.
  Sun. 9/16/18 10:44am Listener Gregory:

I have to say that I enjoy the older Carla Bley work more than her recent small-group albums, which are perhaps too subtle for me. These cuts are all really good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 10:47am Jeff Golick:

She's a tremendous arranger, is one thing that becomes clear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 10:51am Jeff Golick:

"Roast" = Recorded in performance at Judson Hall, New York City, December 29, 1964
  Sun. 9/16/18 10:53am Doug Schulkind:

At Bley in the fields of the Lord.
  Sun. 9/16/18 10:53am Dean:

Escalator Over the Hill was reviewed in Rolling Stone in August '72. Bob Palmer closes the review by noting that it is available for $12 at Jazz Composer's Orchestra, 1841 Broadway, which is the Columbus Circle Building.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 10:54am fred:

And the punmaster is in
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 10:55am Jeff Golick:

I had a feeling Roswell Rudd might bring Doug back...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 10:55am Jeff Golick:

(@Dean: seems like a lot, though it was a triple LP.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 10:56am Jeff Golick:

Some greats on this JCO number that are still with us: Milford Graves, Archie Shepp, Steve Swallow...and of course Bley.
  Sun. 9/16/18 10:59am Dean:

On my first day working in a record store in '78 I was tasked with replacing the price tags on most of the records. I can't remember whether the prices rose a dollar from $2.99 or $3.99, but I think the latter. These were discounts on MSRP. So, yeah, $12 for a 3xLP was not exorbitant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 11:01am Scraps:

Carla Borg was her
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 11:02am Scraps:

before Bley, I mean
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 11:02am Scraps:

And thank you!
  Sun. 9/16/18 11:04am Dean:

Had no idea Bley was born in Oakland!
  Sun. 9/16/18 11:07am rw:

Good morning! I learned recently that Bley and Mantler ran the New Music Distribution Service. I used to carry their catalogues around with me in high school.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 11:08am Jeff Golick:

Good morning, @rw!
  Sun. 9/16/18 11:08am Dean:

Lovella May Borg. Who'd a thunk?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 11:12am Scraps:

Yep. I even went there (on Broadway) to shop. Was devastated when they went broke.
  Sun. 9/16/18 11:13am Dean:

Bley's label's website, designed by Karen Mantler, is hella fun. It even has a library!
http://www.wattxtrawatt.com/library.html
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 11:13am fred:

Damn, it just dawned on me that I'll have to skip this show for almost a month. At least I have a good excuse for one Sunday: Ulzhan Baibussynova is playing in Paris
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 11:14am Jeff Golick:

No excuses necessary, @fred, but we'll miss you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 11:14am Scraps:

(Karen Mantler is Carla’s daughter)
  Sun. 9/16/18 11:15am Dean:

She is, indeed, as she notes here:
http://www.wattxtrawatt.com/biokaren.pdf
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 11:17am Scraps:

I think “Ida Lupino” is Bley’s most-covered song. At least, I have it in several version by several musicians
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 11:18am Scraps:

And here it is!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 11:19am Jeff Golick:

Yes, agreed, @Scraps. I even started considering a marathon premium of only "Ida Lupino" -- the cover designs itself -- but I don't think I could do it.
  Sun. 9/16/18 11:20am Listener Gregory:

My id is saying to stay here with the music, but my superego is telling me to get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather. Because it's Sunday, I have to listen to my superego. I'll catch up later. Thanks, Jeff.
  Sun. 9/16/18 11:20am Listener Gregory:

P.S. Please imagine that I have put on an appropriate amount of sunscreen for which the phrase "clown makeup" never comes to mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 11:21am Jeff Golick:

Thanks for being here, @LG, and never enough sunscreen (is my motto)! Enjoy the sunshine!
  Sun. 9/16/18 11:21am rw:

Enjoy the sunscreen, I mean sunshine LG!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 11:29am fred:

@Jeff: not sure about that single song concept. Looks hard to pull off and choosing how to order the covers must be hell
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 11:30am Jeff Golick:

Agreed, @fred. I mostly just want to put Ida Lupino on the cover of the CD. Did Scott M. do a "Lonely Woman" premium CD, or was that just a Long Rally show?
  Sun. 9/16/18 11:33am rw:

Maybe it could be called Ida Lupino and Other Delights. Though now that I type it out it sounds a little creepy.

I didn't realize how much I like Carla Bley. I'm going to have to start back at the beginning of this show and get the parts I missed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 11:37am Scraps:

I so, so love Carla Bley. This is great!

Of course, I have my faux-radio show three hours of Carla Bley, way way back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 9/16/18 11:38am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Yes, this one is particularly lovely and delightful to me in this moment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 11:38am Jeff Golick:

Hey there, @Granny Spicy Tuna! Wonderful to see you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 11:39am Jeff Golick:

@Scraps: what radio show is that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 9/16/18 11:39am Granny Spicy Tuna:

It's great to be here, thanks!
  Sun. 9/16/18 11:40am Doug Schulkind:

Khris Davis is leading the American League in home runs right now. And like, Ms. Bley, he is from Oakland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 9/16/18 11:41am Sem:

Ida, Know.

Listening intently in the kitchen, where the aroma of acorn squash baking is battling the fragrant mounds of fresh basil leaves for olafactory dominance. Intense, a cage match, one fall to a finish.
Lovin' the show this morning, Jeff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 11:41am fred:

@Jeff: If that was a premium, I don't have it. So probably a show (don't make me count these CDs, man, I've already shamed myself enough)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 11:42am Jeff Golick:

Not to be confused with Kris Davis, on now. Not sure what her OPS is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 11:43am Jeff Golick:

So glad to hear it, @Sem.

@fred: Ha. It was a show, from 2012: wfmu.org...
  Sun. 9/16/18 11:45am Dean:

Oakland is where I heard Taborn, now playing, with Sonny Simmons and Michael Marcus, not too many years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 11:49am fred:

I only saw Taborn with Tim Berne, and I confess I was more focused on Tom Rainey's play
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 11:49am Scraps:

Faux-radio. It doesn’t exist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 11:50am fred:

Mary Halvorson!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 11:50am Scraps:

Tom Rainey is awesome, that is for sure
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 11:51am Jeff Golick:

Aha, @Scraps. (I thought you might just be self-deprecating.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 11:53am fred:

Lucky people in NYC, she's playing tomorrow @Poisson Rouge (and nowhere near me soon, I'm jealous)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 11:57am Jeff Golick:

(^^ Halvorson, that is.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 11:59am Scraps:

Thank for this. This is my favorite portion of WFMU: Saturday night/Sunday morning, Love Is Only Sleeping through Destination: Out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 12:00pm Jeff Golick:

Aw, thanks for the inspiration, @Scraps!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 12:00pm fred:

Thanks Jeff, this was a great show
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 12:01pm listener james from westwood:

Thanks, Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 9/16/18 12:01pm Sem:

Yes, thank you, Jeff. See you and all next time.
  Sun. 9/16/18 12:01pm rw:

Over? Dang. Thanks JG!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 9/16/18 12:03pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

Really enjoyed the sow this morning. Yay, Carla Bley!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 9/16/18 12:06pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

I will be enjoying the sow later today, actually. Enjoyed the show, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 12:08pm Jeff Golick:

Thanks to you wonderful people, @fred, @ljfw, @Sem, @rw, @Granny Spicy Tuna! And all others reading, not named. Take care.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/16/18 12:11pm Jeff Golick:

I totally mangled that Mary Halvorson announcement. 1. Kneebody is not her group (I was thinking of Thumbscrew). 2. She's not on the 16th (today), but, as @fred notes, tomorrow, the 17th. 3. She's performing with Frisell in a duo, and with Robbie Lee, also in a duo, in celebration of her two records with each of them.
