@Erica - OK, cool. When I was doing my Monday soul show I had an issue, so I was concerned
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 10:32pm Funky16Corners:

Of course on Monday we were in the midst of 48 hours of wind and rain
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 10:33pm still b/p:

A story I saw earlier this evening about Joni Mitchell's 1970 Isle of Wight appearance and a new doc about it notes "Donovan showed up in a Gypsy-styled caravan with beveled windows."
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 10:33pm Franco Twinkie:

The Godsin Bros. teamed up with Gene Clark after he left the Byrds for a bunch of songs that were released as Early L.A. Sessions years later. A truly remarkable record
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 10:34pm Funky16Corners:

@SBP - Donovan lived the hippie gypsy life all the way.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 10:35pm Funky16Corners:

@FRanco - The Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers album is one of the greatest of the 60s
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 10:36pm northguineahills:

Noel Harrison, also new!
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 10:37pm Funky16Corners:

For a guy that was kind of a marginal figure, his WB albums have a lot of good stuff on them.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 10:38pm Franco Twinkie:

There is a picture of Noel Harrison sitting inside a refridgerator reading a book that perfectly sums up his character.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 10:39pm Funky16Corners:

He was always in the shadow of his old man, but got around a bit in the 60s. On the Girl From UNCLE

Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 10:43pm Funky16Corners:

@Chresti - Yeah. I'm going to have to play her version of Mable John's 'Same Time Same Place'. Absolutely brilliant
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 10:44pm Franco Twinkie:

Also, Noel Harrison was on Playboy After Dark with the Grateful Dead. Do you think that maybe Warner Bros. offered them as a package deal to Hugh Hefner?
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 10:45pm Funky16Corners:

Y'know, that is not at all out of the question
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 10:49pm Franco Twinkie:

Legend has it that The Dead dumped a bunch of acid in the coffee maker as a gift to the swingers on the show.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 10:50pm Funky16Corners:

I hope it didn't drive Arte Johnson insane
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 10:52pm Parq:

OK, I see, two different sets. (Mrs. Parq and I were having a late dinner and I clearly missed a mike break.) For a moment, I thought that Donovan had written "Very Good Year". Clearly, that would have changed everything.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 10:53pm Erica:

I need to check out more of Noel Harrison's stuff later.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 10:53pm Funky16Corners:

@Parq - That would have been a really unsual 'how did I miss that?' fact!
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 10:53pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - His albums turn up in used record stores, pretty cheaply
  Wed. 9/12/18 10:54pm Dean:

Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 10:58pm Parq:

From the Wikipedia page on "Very Good Year": "William Shatner did a spoken-word cover of this song interspersed with lines from Hamlet on his album The Transformed Man (1968)." I may have to go lie down after reading that.

Heard him open for Yes in '76.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:03pm Funky16Corners:

@DEan - was he with a band or solo?
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:03pm coelacanth∅:

Hüsker Dü did an excellent version of sunshine superman - second only to the original, in my opinion.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:04pm Funky16Corners:

How have I never heard that?!?
  Wed. 9/12/18 11:04pm Dean:

I *believe* he was solo. Ninety percent certain. Was at the Aladdin Hotel in Vegas, the very last time I've ever been to LV (not counting one layover at the airport).
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:04pm Parq:

"Sunshine Superman" was one of those Changed My Life records for me. I am confident that I would be at least a somewhat different person today if that record had never existed. And "Epistle to Dippy" was one of those records that separated me from my friends, none of whom got it in the least.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:05pm Franco Twinkie:

Okay, go with me on this...Morgana King and Della Reese duet on Trans Love Airlines! Yea or nea ?
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:06pm Erica:

Cal Tjader :)
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:06pm Funky16Corners:

@Parq - Supposedly as soon as Dippy heard 'Epistle to Dippy' he left the British army and dropped out.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:06pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - I'd go for that version!
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:07pm still b/p:

Shatner has a new record out of country music! And a Christmas album's coming!

I heard and liked Donavan's Widow With A Shawl a few times back in the 70s, but no one I ever mentioned it to over the years knew what the hell I was talking about when I mentioned it or inquired about it.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:08pm Franco Twinkie:

Cal Tjader also wraps the 60's with a great version of Gimme Shelter. Dude saw it rise and fall.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:08pm coelacanth∅:

sb/p what the hell are you talking about?!
  Wed. 9/12/18 11:08pm Dean:

Hrmm, coulda been '77, because that might have been when Donovan toured with them. But I distinctly recall '76.
  Wed. 9/12/18 11:11pm Dean:

I'm sorry, but the definitive redo of HGM is Hillage's.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:11pm coelacanth∅:

sunshine superman definitely impressed the child me. i loved it right off, though i had no clue. but i suppose that's true of much of the music i heard on the radio and loved, as a child.

That early Jennifer Warnes stuff is excellent
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:16pm coelacanth∅:

sheeit. i have that album. i bought it used and it turned out to be too scratchy to listen to, and i never replaced it.

- and YES to Terry Reid! (i like his version better than the original. 'sorry Donovan!)
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:17pm Franco Twinkie:

Why oh why did the world pass Terry Reid by?
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:17pm doctorjazz:

I know Warnes from her audiophile Leonard Cohen album ... Really different than this (and it was kind of dull, this is so different
  Wed. 9/12/18 11:17pm Dean:

Cheap Trick did that great nod to Reid on their first album.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:18pm Parq:

Franco @ 11:05: I would stand in line all afternoon to buy a copy of that.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:18pm coelacanth∅:

didn't Terry Reid kind of say nevermind to the world?
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:20pm Franco Twinkie:

Couldn't get his ass of Sunny Googe Street apparently.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:21pm Funky16Corners:

hi F16C, hi everyone.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:23pm Funky16Corners:

Hi JtotheK!
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:23pm doctorjazz:

Story I've heard was that Jimmy Page wanted Reid to be Zep's vocalist but it obviously didn't work out.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:24pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - I think recently in NYC (or coming up soon)
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:24pm coelacanth∅:

yes. up until a few years ago i thought maybe he'd get the recognition he deserves after all; but now it's just too late.
Mick Taylor, same deal.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:24pm Funky16Corners:

@Doc - i think Reid was too big a talent to front Zeppelin.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:25pm Funky16Corners:

It wouldn't have worked or him or for Zeppelin
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:25pm coelacanth∅:

Reid turned Page down. i forget why. some prior commitment i think.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:28pm Franco Twinkie:

Jimmy Page wanted Terry to eat a shrunken head as a pledge of commitment. And that's where their paths verged off.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:28pm coelacanth∅:

i agree Larry. (@11.25) Reid is/was too serious of a musician to front a band geared toward adolescents. not dissing zeppelin, but it is what it is. Plant was kind of a caricature.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:29pm doctorjazz:

Checked Wickapedia, they say he was offered the Zep gig but had other commitments and he folks Page he'd do it if he was compensated for the gigs he'd have to cancel (which didn't happen).
  Wed. 9/12/18 11:29pm Dean:

Hey, speaking of vibrators, I heard The Vibrators live at a little dive bar i Albany, CA, last Saturday night. They delivered!
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:29pm Funky16Corners:

The old school punk band?
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:30pm Franco Twinkie:

The Ivy Room. right?
  Wed. 9/12/18 11:30pm Dean:

"Old school." Sigh. Yes. And yes, Ivy Room.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:30pm coelacanth∅:

yes, speaking of vibrators! they wouldn't put superlungs on an album but they released mellow yellow as a single?!
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:31pm Franco Twinkie:

I know that place, it's by the bowling alley on San Pablo.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:32pm Erica:

LP Edit? Shouldn't that read LP version?
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:32pm Funky16Corners:

I think Mellow Yellow benefited from vagueness. Superlungs, not so much
  Wed. 9/12/18 11:33pm Dean:

It is, indeed, Franco, a few short blocks south of the bowling alley, right at Solano.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:33pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica I put it that way because most folks are familiar with the 45 version which is radically different (shorter, restructured)
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:34pm Franco Twinkie:

Chresti's brother hangs out at The Ivy Room.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:34pm Erica:

That's what I meant Larry. If it's says Edit, it's an edited version, not an album length version.
  Wed. 9/12/18 11:34pm Dean:

Opening bands were a trio of young, talented musicians (I missed the first group), utterly devoted to a punk ethos. And then The Vibrators took the stage and demonstrated how punk had nothing to do with devotion to anything.
  Wed. 9/12/18 11:36pm Dean:

(Only one was from the original band c. '77, but the others were, uh, of a certain age and duly beer-bellied or en-leathered.)
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:36pm Franco Twinkie:

Dean, do you ever go to that place on Gillman?
  Wed. 9/12/18 11:38pm Dean:

I've never been to the punk venue, no, but I live about three, four blocks from it.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:39pm coelacanth∅:

so, before leaving Donovan behind, i wonder if anyone agrees with me; or would admit to agreeing with me...
i love the "over-produced" version of catch the wind that used to be on the Donovan's greatest hits album; now replaced (a la little wing on Hendrix in the west; or darker than blue on Curtis!)with the trying-to-sound-like-Dylan version, which i think lacks in emotion and is generally weak.
...the orchestrated version seems to be hard to get now. i'm glad i still have the original record.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:39pm JtotheK:

was listening to Moon Rappin' this past weekend. great record.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:39pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:40pm coelacanth∅:

(oh, that "right" was regarding mellow yellow's vagueness)
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:40pm Funky16Corners:

I heard the acoustic version first, and it took me a bit to appreciate the Greatest Hits version but I eventually got to like both.

I liked Donovan in his Dylan wannabe period .
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:42pm coelacanth∅:

right, doc. i suppose if i'd heard the acoustic version first i might not feel as strongly as i do.

But only Bob Dylan can be Bob Dylan.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:48pm Funky16Corners:

True, but the cottage industry of imitation/neext Dylans is a healthy one. Lots to listen to
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:48pm doctorjazz:

Even Bruce Springsteen had his Dylan wannabe days (a good Chung of his first album fits the bill Some artists can take that influence and run with it.
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:48pm Franco Twinkie:

Off the subject, Dean. I was going to my mom's house the day before yesterday and I saw this food truck called La Chingona on the corner of Valley and Bassetdale. I started laughing so hard I turned around just to get a picture, but then decided what the hell and got lunch for me and my mom....Ay que la chinganda!
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:50pm coelacanth∅:

even the beatles had their Dylan wannabe moment. the 'stones too.
  Wed. 9/12/18 11:52pm Dean:

Franco, I live in Berkeley near San Pablo and Gilman. I mean really near San Pablo and Gilman.

Chingona? Doesn't mean chincanda, does it?

Man, I would love to visit the old Mexican joints of my youth/adolescence/post-adolescence. Start with Ted's on Washington in unincorporated LA near Whittier...
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:52pm doctorjazz:

I recall them crediting Dylan for turning them around and "getting serious" lyrically .
Avatar Wed. 9/12/18 11:52pm coelacanth∅:

and about Springsteen; my favorite album, by far, is nebraska. it may not be a Dylan wannabe period, but it ended up being his most Dylan-esq album, i think.
