jeff, i understand your sentiment. i had to actively reverse that mentality when i started going to churches to hear bach on a regular basis. it's possible to find your way in without completely buying in.
Avatar 2:20pm
aaronfromMI:

Aretha might be one of the most successful teen moms ever.
Avatar 2:21pm
geezerette:

It's possible to think of it all as metaphor.
Avatar 2:21pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

i love how certain gospel and blues songs get to a point of barely hanging on by a thread. "motherless child" is often performed this way, and of course this "never grow old" we're hearing now. so empty, and yet every scream is still the song.
Avatar 2:23pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

metaphor of just being in awe of creation. we don't all agree on how creation happened/s, but it's not so hard to share in the wonder of it all.
Avatar 2:23pm
Rocky Horror:

Aretha was a mom at 12 year old and still made a good life for her family and her kids
Avatar 2:23pm
aaronfromMI:

Many folks view the bible as not just metaphor, but as a text of political resistance. Unfortunately something that was on the fringes of society became society and became the oppressor.

Whenever I hear of someone in the church becoming pregnant at such a young age I, unfortunately, think of sexual assault.
Avatar 2:28pm

my impression is it was a boyfriend and it was life in detroit, but i certainly don't know.
Avatar 2:30pm

I could listen to The Rev. C.L. Franklin say "Italy" all day.
Avatar 2:32pm
geezerette:

Kurt, I agree completely. We all need the strength, comfort and encouragement that great beauty of any kind inspires.
  2:32pm
paula:

yes,
'i had to actively reverse that mentality when i started going to churches to hear bach on a regular basis'.
lived in Italia for a while. I astonishingly went to a "mass" occasionally to stare at paintings and mosaics esp in Venezia and to hear the singing. Like a Titian right there on the altar. & I was grateful for the year of Latin those Roman Catholics inflicted upon me, helped me learn other languages in my Euro travels.
I'm sad to harsh-Aretha was most likely raped by someone in her church community. I saw it happen in rural north america.
  2:34pm
JakeGould:

@aaronfromMI: Kinda cynical POV. No doubt sexual assault occurred and still occurs like that, it most likely has more to do with lack of sexual education and/or a community that represses basic knowledge of birth control. It’s all “dark” honestly, but I would not ascribe two teenagers “doing it” to be something akin to assault.

Unless you are talking about Gérard Depardieu and what he and his friends did as kids. Anyway! That’s that!

amazing amazing show, Kurt, -- again, THANK-YOU!
(@ geezerette -- YES definitely a true gift!)
re: Aretha's teen-Mom-dom -- i have NO idea about how that happened, it could be just a case of two young kids fooling around with no idea of how their bodies work . . . or, it could be sexual assault at the hands of someone older, abusive, etc. . . . i HOPE to "God" (if indeed there IS a "God" or even if there is not) that it is the former, and not the latter
