Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 8:07am Doug Schulkind:

Funny you should say. I am in a sleepless haze having been up most the night with a dog having a panic attack. Just the slightest change in barometric pressure gives her the going-out-of-my-mind-over-a-coming-thunderstorm blues.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 8:15am Brian in UK:

Should be a great show then. No, really.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 8:16am Doug Schulkind:

Really really.

Well, sort of, kind of, like.

My last dog had major anxiety issues. They started 1 year during the 4th if July firecracker assault on the ears; every time it thundered or any other loud noise sent her unde the bed, and I couldn't get her to go out for days unless I carried her down the steps from my 3rd floor Park Slope walk up apartment (it was no fun).

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 9:44am doctorjazz:

Jelly Roll's blues have this great, casual intensity and soul. (the content not so casual, just the singing style). Love it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 9:46am Doug Schulkind:

OK, killed the buzz. Looks like it was a failing turntable amp. Unfortunately, bad things happen in threes. What's next?

This Jelly Roll is miraculous, Doug. Hey, gang!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 9:48am coelacanth∅:

i have a recording of Jelly Roll talking about how he did these songs because he played piano and he might be considered foofy. (his actual words were that he "didn't want the feminine thing on so ... started making the songs kinda smutty")

I love these old romantic songs!

can we hear Lucile Bogen after this?
  Fri. 8/17/18 10:12am Listener Gregory:

Liner notes reveal that the Morton recordings were on two battery-powered Presto disc recording machines, so that Lomax could switch discs with a minimum of delay.

Vortex was distributed by Atlantic, but who owned the label?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 10:32am Doug Schulkind:

Vortex was an Atlantic subsidiary, no, Mr C?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/17/18 10:33am dutchtheo:

it sounded like two; I got my informaation from AllMusic;"You Know How We Do," recorded by a pianoless septet with Roswell Rudd on trombone, percussionist Archie Lee, and second bassist Lewis Worrell. The stark, gospel-style head (also deeply influenced by Coleman), where it exists at all, is supplanted by the dual bass fury and a solidly rhythmic attack -- even the solo phrasings on the brass and saxophone underscore this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 10:33am Doug Schulkind:

My man Joel Dorn produced a number of the Vortex releases (including the Robin Kenyatta we just heard), but not this Chick Corea effort. The producer of this record?....

Herbie Mann
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 10:34am Doug Schulkind:

Herbie Mann's son Geoff once played live on my show, leading the Eternal Buzz Brass Band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 10:35am Doug Schulkind:

@dutchtheo
You may just be right. The info I had didn't list Roswell Rudd on the track I played, but I clearly heard him. So...

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 10:37am Doug Schulkind:

Mornin' Doug, mornin' all
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/17/18 10:45am Sam Segal:

I once played this Byard Lancaster record on my college radio show at the University of Minnesota. Got a call on the studio line, picked up the phone, and heard in a thick southern accent, "Is this Byard Lancaster?!" I told the gentleman that it was indeed. He said, "Wow, I studied under Byard Lancaster in the '70s." The guy on the phone turned out to be George Cartwright, saxophonist from the great Downtown NYC act Curlew. Ended up having him on my show several times after that, all triggered by that amazing Byard Lancaster album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 10:47am Jeff Golick:

Wow great story and experience, @Sam!

Also: MILFORD GRAVES.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 10:47am Doug Schulkind:

"My Back Pages" appeared on Keith Jarrett's Vortex LP Somewhere Before. But I'm not sure Lay Lady Lay every appeared on LP.

DJing truth to power: Sam Segal!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 10:49am Jeff Golick:

Linda Sharrock is keepin' on, btw: improvising-beings.bandcamp.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 10:51am fred:

That Sharrock track came conveniently pre-clicky-starred
  Fri. 8/17/18 10:51am Listener Gregory:

Linda Sharrock is being accompanied by road paving outside my window. Both can be seen as a valiant protest against the inevitable.
  Fri. 8/17/18 10:58am Listener Gregory:

From now on would like to be known as Listener Gregoree.
  Fri. 8/17/18 10:59am Listener Gregory:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 11:02am coelacanth∅:

i guess she yielded to temptation
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 11:04am Jeff Golick:

I enjoyed this little anecdote: "Etta James once recalled listening to Franklin’s version of Johnny Mercer and Hoagy Carmichael’s standard “Skylark.” In the second verse, Franklin jumps an octave. “I had to scratch my head and ask myself, How the fuck did that bitch do that? I remember running into Sarah Vaughan, who always intimidated me. Sarah said, ‘Have you heard of this Aretha Franklin girl?’ I said, ‘You heard her do ‘Skylark,’ didn’t you?’ Sarah said, ‘Yes, I did, and I’m never singing that song again.’ ”
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 11:04am Doug Schulkind:

Spirit in the Dark, an Aretha composition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 11:05am Doug Schulkind:

Duane Allman on guitar, I believe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 11:09am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
That anecdote stood out to me, too.
  Fri. 8/17/18 11:12am Dean:

Last Friday Doug played a track (twice!) from a 2005 compilation of early '50s gospel music out of Texas. On that day I ordered the comp from Amoeba, along with Aretha's Amazing Grace. The next day we learned that Aretha's health was declining precipitously. The Texas comp arrived yesterday. It's amazing. Still waiting on Amazing Grace, though.

Thank God they didn't try to fake the strings with a synthesizer.

Is there an Aretha Day yet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 11:45am Doug Schulkind:

Columbia University radio WKCR will be doing an all-day Aretha memorial broadcast on Sunday.

Aretha could also pull off a "wig drop." www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 11:46am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
Oh yeah. That is the baddest bad-ass moment of truth in American stagecraft.

Heading out now. Will be listening from the car. Thanks again Doug! Later everone. ngh, hope the health issues get better soon!

This is a side of Purdie you don't really get from his Beatles work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 11:47am Doug Schulkind:

Keep both ears on the wheel, rw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 11:51am Doug Schulkind:

So many sides to Mr. Purdie.

NGH, sorry to hear it, not sure what the problem is, but hope you can get to see someone soon, sounds like it needs attention. Hopefully get well soon!

Please do me the honor of staying tuned for Uncle Michael's Hinky Dinky Time broadcast, up next here on the Drummer Stream. After a power-loss knocked him off the air last week, you can only guess what kind of POWERHOUSE show he has in store for us today.

This is lovely, Doug!
No voice like Aretha's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 11:56am Doug Schulkind:

Hello radio brother Rich!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 11:57am Doug Schulkind:

"How I Got Over" is probably my favorite performance on this LP, but that would not be the track to end all tracks today.

I Never Loved a Show (the Way I Loved This One).
Thanks, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 11:59am Doug Schulkind:

I think it's Rev. James Cleveland on piano (he is credited). But does anyone know for sure?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/17/18 11:59am Uncle Michael:

Zats, isn't there a button to favorite this episode? I don't see the clicky-star for that.

There's no where to go after this...silence is our canvas.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 12:04pm Jeff Golick:

I think it's Aretha at the piano: " Aretha smiled as her father spoke, and moments later as she seated herself behind a piano and started to play “God Will Take Care of You” and began to perspire, he took out his handkerchief and wiped her brow while she sang and pounded the keys." www.billboard.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 12:04pm Rich in Washington:

Thanks, Doug! That was beautiful!
