MTA: “Hey! Let’s put up a big blue wall for one full year and not tell utterly anybody—including train conductors—about it!”
Another MTA Person: “Great idea!”
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 8/4/18 12:38pm JakeGould:

Anyway, I want it to cool down. I actually experience an urban mirage a few days ago. It was so hot and I decided to walk 20+ blocks anyway. I end up in a grocery and am staring at the candy and all of the labels are blurring into one. Somehow I was on the edge of fainting for a few blocks and managed not to faint or get hit by a car.

A world somewhat familiar but "off axis" "exotic" "new" "to be discovered". Not necessarily exploited. No getting around European/American seeing everything from stance of superiority though
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 8/4/18 1:18pm Mayuko:

@Rickwaukee I find it tough to speak clearly since it's complicated due to many flipping in this topic. Something "to be discovered" from the west now is something 'to discover' for the orient too, because the 'orient' is internalizing western view and disconnected from tradition. At the same time 'orient' is presenting this thing that's discovered as 'tradition" despite the disconnection.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 8/4/18 1:19pm fred:

I gave up on the Orientalism angle, probably for wrong reasons. I was just finding out about Edward Said when I was told I was an oppressor because I didn't know Frantz Fanon. I should have read him, but I just gave up. Very Bad Choice
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 8/4/18 1:20pm Mayuko:

@Rickwaukee like when Japanese artist paint Geisha woman dressed in kimono. We no longer have much active geisha culture and I have no idea how to wear kimono even. But people in the west like that visual and Japanese people sell it as "tradition" though it's been dead for long and has nothing to do with us really.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 8/4/18 1:22pm Mayuko:

Scraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaps!!! Welcome, my radio family.
  Sat. 8/4/18 1:22pm Dean:

I read Orientalism ages ago, mid-'80s. It's Culture & Imperialism that I have yet to endure: https://janeaustensummer.files.wordpress.com/2016/01/culture_and_imperialism.pdf

And I suspect your take on adoption of Western notions of what is "to be discovered" is exactly right, @Mayuko.
  Sat. 8/4/18 1:23pm JakeGould:

Fetishizing a culture to fit a predetermined fantasy is something that comes from a position of power and entitlement. It’s annoying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 8/4/18 1:25pm fred:

@Mayuko: Have Matt Warwick learn how to wear a Kimono by next marathon. That should bring a lot of pledges
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 8/4/18 1:25pm Jeff Golick:

This isn't about Orientalism, per se, but this discussion is reminding me of a very interesting book called A Whale Hunt, by Robert Sullivan. It's about a Pacific Northwest tribe that regains the right to hunt for whales in the traditional fashion, only no one really remembers how to do it anymore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 8/4/18 1:25pm northguineahills:

Digging this Oswaldo Lares!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 8/4/18 1:26pm Jeff Golick:

( ^ That is a gross oversimplification, of course.)
  Sat. 8/4/18 1:27pm Rickwaukee:

Uh oh, discovering a culture discovering itself via those who discovered them rediscovering it is indeed complicated
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 8/4/18 1:28pm fred:

@Jeff Golick: oversimplifications tend to be gross, comes with the territory
  Sat. 8/4/18 1:29pm P-90:

@Mayuko: but aren't there still traditionalists in Japan who like to study ad preserve arts like kimono, geisha, tea ceremony, flower arranging, swordsmanship, etc. as historical elements of Japanese culture, with the understanding that there is a modern Japan now that isn't all about those things?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 8/4/18 1:30pm coelacanth∅:

are there still other countries/cultures that dabble in the romanticized or exaggerated image of the us which depicts cowboys and homesteaders? many people in the us still imagine such a thing exists here, to some degree, "far" from where they live.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 8/4/18 1:30pm Mayuko:

Thanks Dean! I must read that to understand this really. Reading so hard :/ Thanks for the link!
  Sat. 8/4/18 1:30pm JakeGould:

@P-90: Using that analogy, very few U.S. re-enact
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 8/4/18 1:30pm listener james from westwood:

@Mayuko: Not to derail from Orientalism, but I've been spending the show writing a real-live letter with real fountain pen. I've been trying to improve my handwriting and pen use and from what my correspondent tells me, both are better since even this winter. The music's been a lovely complement to the slow, careful production of words.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 8/4/18 1:31pm Mayuko:

@fred Oh! I'll try check out Frantz Fanon too. Looks interesting.
  Sat. 8/4/18 1:31pm P-90:

I mean: they practice these traditions because they value them, not just to entertain or export to foreigners...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 8/4/18 1:31pm Jeff Golick:

@Rickwauke: that sums it up admirably. Throw in a gaggle of agitated eco-warriors and journalists, and it's quite a soup.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 8/4/18 1:32pm Mayuko:

@fred I was thinking, with this debut album cover YMO was trying to find a spot that is somehow real, that's neither nationalism/traditionalism, exoticism(western view) or oriental orientalism (internalizing western view) images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com...

I should probably request Matt to be my co-host and dress him like that cover!
  Sat. 8/4/18 1:34pm JakeGould:

@P-90: Using that analogy, very few U.S. re-enactors ever are taken as representative of the whole of U.S. culture. Nobody ever says that Civil War re-enactors or people in Colonial Willuamburg or at the Alamo are representative of the whole of U.S. culture. Not the same with the way Western looks at other cultures.
  Sat. 8/4/18 1:34pm Dean:

I recall checking out a volume from a university library for a colleague at work in the '80s, The Lost World of Irian Jaya, as he prepared to travel to IJ on a vacation. The book included photos of the tribes people, who not long before had never encountered Westerners. In the photos, they rode motorcycles and drank Coca Cola.

Etran de L'Air channeling Jerry Garcia, or vice versa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 8/4/18 1:35pm paul b:

When I was a kid - and this was probably several several decades ago. I learned about the world by reading an illustrated book series (My Bookhouse) put together in the 1920's by Olive Beaupre Miller. I admit it did instill in me a fondness for romantic exoticism that I could never completely shake.

That the world is only occasionally as magical as those books suggested I hold against no one or thing.
  Sat. 8/4/18 1:36pm P-90:

I said nothing that has anything to do with Civil War reenactments in the US.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 8/4/18 1:36pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 8/4/18 1:37pm fred:

One thing about Fanon is that is seems he wrote in French, which I have trouble reading, so I'd have to rely on a translation or go back to my native language. Neither option appeal to me

@fred: It's become a shrubbery, w/ more peppers then I know what to do w/, and most of my friends are too scared to try them.

@coel: In Germany, (especially East Germany), and most of eastern Europe, the American cowboy trope used to be a fetish. I think it's somewhat died down lately (there used to be cowboy and indian outdoor festivals in East Germany).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 8/4/18 1:44pm fred:

@JakeGould: Is that strong enough to melt a MTA blue wall?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 8/4/18 1:45pm northguineahills:

@Jake: "b/c you don't have any mace, who're you're going to call!"
Ghost Peppers!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 8/4/18 1:45pm Mayuko:

@Jeff G that kind of thing really is similar to what I was thinking too! Like the indigenous Ainu people in Northern Japan, I have (and played here) recordings of their ritual starting with "we can not do this like our ancestors could, but we will do our best so please forgive us"

Because their lifestyle has been changed due to oppressors = Japanese main islanders, which I am part of. And our life styles have changed because of American influence. Nobody is connected to roots really in this industrialized world it feels. And the attempts to re-connect to roots can often be used by nationalists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 8/4/18 1:47pm Ike:

Hi all!

@fred@1:37, your English immersion is that deep? Fascinating.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 8/4/18 1:49pm fred:

@Mayuko: I had never heard Ainu music before hearing that on your show. And I love it (reminds me of Mongolian music). So you've done your share
  Sat. 8/4/18 1:50pm Jesse k:

I just got a little sad when I realized the shows over soon.
Hi Mayuko, you've been my studio/nap soundtrack today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 8/4/18 1:50pm Mayuko:

@P-90 yeah, I know some young people who study ethnology and trying to truly re-connect with traditions and roots, without exorcizing/internalizing western views. Who live in country side and do a lot of research there, connect with locals, revitalizing old handcrafts etc. I feel like this is relatively new movement there in Japan. And I think they are trying to be cosmopolitan in their approach too. Just not in the samurai geisha way I guess.
  Sat. 8/4/18 1:50pm Rickwaukee:

Nationalism will look ridiculous in 200 years when everyone will be buying their water from Coca-Cola Co/, a division of Neslte/Kraft/Sony.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 8/4/18 1:52pm Mayuko:

@P-90 But the thing is not all the samurai geisha thing is bad, I like Ninja Turtles too. That's the funny thing about this complicated oriental business.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 8/4/18 1:52pm fred:

@Ike: Unfortunately. Long story, but basically I only got into philosophy and critical thinking in English, while for me French is the language of school and obedience. If that makes sense. Probably not
  Sat. 8/4/18 1:52pm JakeGould:

Thanks Mayuko!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 8/4/18 1:54pm northguineahills:

  Sat. 8/4/18 1:57pm Dean:

'Increasingly, I find the blind faith that some have in the power of technology to "cross borders" and "unite us" to be entirely misguided.'

Absolutely. It started smelling bad c.1993 (specifically, with the arrival of Howard Rheingold's The Virtual Community). I was not then a COM.

Thanks Mayuko!
The Orientalism discussion gave me a flashback of a song you played on monday. Kylie in a kimono in NY ( with Tei Towa & Hosono Haruomi )

@paul b I think romanticizing something you don't know yet is just human nature and what makes us curious about others... and I don't think that's a bad thing for kids especially. just the question is would you take it futher and really try get to know that 'others' deeper and for real, I suppose.

Thanks Mayuko! We’re driving across the smoke filled desert of California enjoying the tunes. Very surreal.

i used to "go out" with a woman who always wore a kimono at home. not asian; safartic jew ancestry. she didn't do any other typically or stereotypically japanese cultural practices. she just liked kimonos.

I'm kind of a poster boy for orientalism, so I'm not really able to contribute there

One of the words I dislike the most of all is "exotic" – because, for one thing, it's a word which conveys essentially zero information about its supposed subject, but rather only tells you things about the person using it (kind of like the less-icky "weird" in that way) – but also, and mostly, because of the creepy way I've so often seen it used (as a fetishistic, objectifying way to refer to women of some race or combo thereof other than the speaker's). Eww.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 8/4/18 2:26pm fred:

@Jeff Moore: Jason Elbogen has a closely related rant about "ethnic music". You should get it touch (also, you should somehow drag him back to the station)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 8/4/18 2:27pm Mayuko:

@Jeff Thanks for the insight! I agree re: 'exotic' is one way of sex-objectifying women in 'the orient'. Actually I only came to really think of that aspect when Joe McGasko pointed it out for me a while ago! I guess he shares that disgust with you. I've been trying to put this idea of flipping 'exoticism' together for a marathon premium for a while now, but its too big topic for me so far! Super interesting though.

@Mayuko: I don't think it's worth your time. The Male Western Gaze doesn't need your contribution. Many other viewpoints could use it though. It's a good starting point, but spin it around
