"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

"According to folklore, the first major shamal occurring around May 25 is known as the Al-Haffar, or driller, since it drills huge depressions in desert sand dunes. The second, arriving in early June, coincides with the dawn star, Thorayya (Pleiades), and is therefore named Barih Thorayya. During this event, which is more violent than the others, fishermen usually remain in port because ancient folklore tells them that this wind devours ships. Near the end of June, the last shamal arrives, known as the Al-Dabaran, or the follower. It is violent and continues for several days. Local residents keep doors and windows firmly shut as this shamal includes an all-penetrating fine dust which gets into everything."

Crateslinger --- And all
FIRST OFF --- THE TIDE IS DEADLY ...NEVER EVER NEVER SWIM WITH THE OUTGOING TIDE >>>>NEVER YOU ARE DEAD in SHEEPSHEAD BAY OR SANDY SHORE
Only swim with an in tide or the 1 hour betwixt tide...Best time is the i hour high tide .. At low tide, it can be hard to get out- the seawalll.

Put a rope somewhere so you can pull yourself out...

Places: all along the east river (with a rope readY and tides in mind).. Hudson too off the piers, but a lot of police... ..

Easy bits.. underneath the Bklyn Bridge land there...
Underneath the Verezzano - Land bits there too

Now - just near the Ikea ferry - towards the cranes...

LISTEN CAREFULLY: no great dives, do not go too low(there are cables) and MINd THE FUCKIN TIDES - never on an outgoing tide!!!!!!!!!!!NEVER !!!
NEVER!!!!

@Morphe - yeah, I'm a sailor, so I'm pretty alert to the currents - that's why I asked! - I almost lost a dog in the East at Grand St in Billburg a while back. Last year I went swimming in Sheepshead Bay twice and all my cuts and scrapes (I'm always a mess) got infected and wouldn't heal. Both times! I love that you bring a rope. That's badass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am
crateslinger:

I remember about 25 years ago, when NYPD lost a diver and never found his body. He was with a dive boat and a bunch of other professional divers and just disappeared in the East River around Delancey I think. I never followed up, so maybe it ended differently, but that's the way I remember it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am

Morphe - the fact that you swim in the East River with a lifeline means you are a guy I'd like to meet. If you want to go sailing in the lower harbor (Rockaway Inlet/Sandy Hook/Verazanno Narrows) while you're in town, e-mail me dan at crateshop dot com. I have an O'day 30 moored in Sheepshead Bay and go out every weekend I can. It's hard to find crew though. Everybody says they want to do shit, but nobody actually wants to do shit.

Morphe:

Crate: Madrid is a dry, dirty fascist city (a lot of good people too).. I swim = paddle in the rivers north (40Min on the bus) I need oceans!!!!!!!!I take the train or plane to the Med every 2 weeks for a real swim... I am completely cut up from the barnacles. The Med does not normally have much tide but it is very low due to the drought here. I had to crawl across rocks/barnacles to get to my clothes. My son said I had to change my sheets because of all the bloodstains in my bed ...
