Hello Henry - fresh off the press!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 4:23pm Webhamster Henry:

Years ago I think Rob W. did a set of the African music that David Byrne took some of his rhythms and melodies from.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/3/18 4:24pm David D:

Yes, there has been a lot of discussion about the cultural transfer going on, I'll talk about it during the break if I don't forget.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 4:24pm doctorjazz:

Like this Eno (and this album ).
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 4:26pm northguineahills:

I believe this is the fourth song From Taking Tiger Mountain I've heard on WFMU I've heard today. Jesse Jarnow, Clay Pigeon, and Moist Matty Warwick, and now you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 4:27pm northguineahills:

( I made have conflated the last two weeks together, I'm not very good at organizing temporality).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/3/18 4:27pm David D:

NGH: How does that seem to happen so often?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/3/18 4:30pm David D:

Ah the old appropriation question!

I will be on the plane from London to Athens when England plays its next World Cup match. I hope there’s no TV in the cockpit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 5:15pm northguineahills:

It's odd watching England attempt over and over to shoot themselves in the foot and somehow miss and actually play a decent game,
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/3/18 5:15pm David D:

If you fly east first, wave as you fly by!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 5:21pm northguineahills:

Flying Icelandic Air or Air France (or AeroMexico), It usually had all of the American cable channels for free going to Europe, so, you're out of luck, Doug. Most American airlines, however, will charge the passengers for most channels.
Avatar Tue. 7/3/18 5:24pm geezerette:

"Cultural appropriation" is pale people unaware of their historic privilege trying to "preserve" music, etc., by everyone else in order to make other pale people aware of the world beyond their subconscious blinders.

David, I totally agree with you that arts and sciences have always crossed cultures; but colonialism, through enormous effort, has kept subjugated populations isolated from communication technologies. History is dynamic, there is more back and forth now, I think. I'm hoping at the end of historical corrections and despite regressive tendencies in the world at the moment, there will come a time when no cultures are "up" or "down" but side by side.
I hope I'm understood. Language is such a prickly thing these days.
Avatar Tue. 7/3/18 5:25pm geezerette:

...& wow, do I love what you're playing!
Back to work now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 5:28pm northguineahills:

Albatross, new to me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 5:30pm northguineahills:

Joe Mcphee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/3/18 5:33pm David D:

Thanks, Geezerette (for both comments!) It is an interesting topic to think about. I suppose the question is, at what point should people think that cultural borrowing and adaptation is something worthy of criticism.
Avatar Tue. 7/3/18 5:34pm geezerette:

Joe McPhee, wonderful!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 5:38pm Bas NL:

Hello all! And if i may add, cultural mixing is difficult. Analogous to painting; to much blending and you always end up with brown.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/3/18 5:38pm David D:

Greetings, Bas!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 5:39pm Bas NL:

Hi David!
Avatar Tue. 7/3/18 5:43pm geezerette:

David, I think perhaps when the borrower / adapter takes full credit, in which case it is theft. Creativity depends on imaginations being sparked by all manner of things and not always consciously so.
It's a deep and fascinating subject. I'm sure this conversation will continue!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 5:44pm northguineahills:

Braxton action!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/3/18 5:45pm David D:

Geezerette, sounds about right, yes a topic for many a long night! But everyone feel free to add your two cents (or mustard as they say in these parts)...
Avatar Tue. 7/3/18 5:46pm geezerette:

Hey, Bas! :)
NGH, wow,right?!

OK, gotta resume wrassling that sucker till it beats me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 5:48pm Bas NL:

Hi geezerette! Don't let that paint win! ;)
  Tue. 7/3/18 5:50pm Dean:

I buy records precisely when Marc Aubort and Joanna Nickrenz were the engineers. So, yeah, mention them!
  Tue. 7/3/18 5:52pm Dean:

And CIMP's Marc Rusch, of course.
  Tue. 7/3/18 5:54pm Dean:

You don't have a July 4 in Leipzig?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 5:55pm Bas NL:

I challenged Mary Wing the other day.. seems like she's getting there! www.guinnessworldrecords.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 5:56pm Stanley:

Checking in, having calmed down from the football hysteria.
Greetings everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 5:57pm Listening Out There:

...in Leipzig, July 4 is followed by July 5...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 5:57pm northguineahills:

@Stanley: See my previous England footy comments....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 5:57pm Listening Out There:

...they don't go from July 3 to July 5...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 5:59pm Bas NL:

Same here in the Netherlands i'm afraid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/3/18 6:02pm David D:

Hey my mixing board display now reads 4.07.2018 - so I guess it's happening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 6:02pm Stanley:

You're right, David but I'm English. Having spent 32 years in Scotland, I somehow cannot shake my allegiance to the football team. Watched it with two Scots and two other English, all supporting England. None of that Scottish/English BS that abounds at times like these.
  Tue. 7/3/18 6:03pm Dean:

Rockets' red glare? Bombs bursting? Ramparts? That's how I know it's the FoJ.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 6:05pm Stanley:

NGH: it's indeed a sort of miracle they got through on penalties. First time ever in the World Cup. Facing Colombia, I thought here we go again! But hey, the spell is broken and Sweden next, it's looking good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 6:09pm northguineahills:

Well, for you proud Prussian types, Friedrich van Stueban was a major general for the Continentals during the Revolutionary War, and wrote their first field book. Last time I checked a map, Leipzig was once part of the Kingdom of Prussia, so, yes, celebrate boom-boom day w/ brats and bier!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 6:11pm northguineahills:

@Bas NL: Well, het Uurwerk Oranje is also undefeated in this WC just like the US, so, you have that going for you.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 6:12pm northguineahills:

I heart anything to do w/ the Legend of Selda Bagcan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/3/18 6:13pm David D:

Beer works for me any day, even if the Prussians never quite made it into this part of Saxony.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 6:16pm Stanley:

NGH - here's a bit of Prussian trivia for you: Holger Czukay was born in the Free City of Danzig (later Gdansk), a city-state that existed between the wars.
  Tue. 7/3/18 6:16pm DarcyBot:

Nice choice-Pascal Comelade--JAMMIN!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 6:17pm Bas NL:

@ngh: Oranje vs US.. now that would be something.. ;D
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/3/18 6:17pm David D:

Hey DarcyBot! Great to see you on the boards!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 6:18pm northguineahills:

Dark Days, that was a fun doc of the mole people of NYC....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 6:19pm northguineahills:

The Free City of Danzig government in exile still exists....en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 6:20pm doctorjazz:

OK, time to head out once again (kicking myself, had an offer to to see Ry Coder and Emmylou Harris in Philly, but I knew it would be tight getting there from Staten Island after work. Damn...)
Anyway, catch you all next train!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 6:21pm northguineahills:

The only reason the Prussians never got Saxony is b/c Bonaparte happened, although considering the kingdom of Germany was mainly due to Bismark (in it's final form), I'd say they got Saxony after all....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 6:21pm Bas NL:

Great set developing here David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 6:21pm northguineahills:

wow, that sounds like a great show, oh well doctorjazz, have fun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 6:23pm northguineahills:

I saw Dark Days the 2nd week after I moved to NYC. It was as hot that day as it is now up there....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/3/18 6:26pm David D:

Thanks, Bas!
  Tue. 7/3/18 6:26pm Doug Schulkind:

What Bas said.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/3/18 6:28pm David D:

Might be a while before I see him again, unless he tours down to America's wang (most bands/musicians don't).
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/3/18 6:41pm northguineahills:

(But I got to see the Talibam!/Gig Talk guys, so who knows.....)

Enjoying this Chris Forsyth
