Years ago I think Rob W. did a set of the African music that David Byrne took some of his rhythms and melodies from.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm

Yes, there has been a lot of discussion about the cultural transfer going on, I'll talk about it during the break if I don't forget.

Flying Icelandic Air or Air France (or AeroMexico), It usually had all of the American cable channels for free going to Europe, so, you're out of luck, Doug. Most American airlines, however, will charge the passengers for most channels.

geezerette:

"Cultural appropriation" is pale people unaware of their historic privilege trying to "preserve" music, etc., by everyone else in order to make other pale people aware of the world beyond their subconscious blinders.

David, I totally agree with you that arts and sciences have always crossed cultures; but colonialism, through enormous effort, has kept subjugated populations isolated from communication technologies. History is dynamic, there is more back and forth now, I think. I'm hoping at the end of historical corrections and despite regressive tendencies in the world at the moment, there will come a time when no cultures are "up" or "down" but side by side.
I hope I'm understood. Language is such a prickly thing these days.

Thanks, Geezerette (for both comments!) It is an interesting topic to think about. I suppose the question is, at what point should people think that cultural borrowing and adaptation is something worthy of criticism.

Hello all! And if i may add, cultural mixing is difficult. Analogous to painting; to much blending and you always end up with brown.

Bas NL:

Hi David!
Avatar 5:43pm

David, I think perhaps when the borrower / adapter takes full credit, in which case it is theft. Creativity depends on imaginations being sparked by all manner of things and not always consciously so.
It's a deep and fascinating subject. I'm sure this conversation will continue!

You're right, David but I'm English. Having spent 32 years in Scotland, I somehow cannot shake my allegiance to the football team. Watched it with two Scots and two other English, all supporting England. None of that Scottish/English BS that abounds at times like these.

Rockets' red glare? Bombs bursting? Ramparts? That's how I know it's the FoJ.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 6:05pm

NGH: it's indeed a sort of miracle they got through on penalties. First time ever in the World Cup. Facing Colombia, I thought here we go again! But hey, the spell is broken and Sweden next, it's looking good.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 6:09pm
northguineahills:

Well, for you proud Prussian types, Friedrich van Stueban was a major general for the Continentals during the Revolutionary War, and wrote their first field book. Last time I checked a map, Leipzig was once part of the Kingdom of Prussia, so, yes, celebrate boom-boom day w/ brats and bier!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 6:11pm

Anyway, catch you all next train!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 6:21pm
northguineahills:

The only reason the Prussians never got Saxony is b/c Bonaparte happened, although considering the kingdom of Germany was mainly due to Bismark (in it's final form), I'd say they got Saxony after all....
