I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

PTSD is really a very recent thing people admit to. My parents suffered from post-World War II PTSD but nobody did much about it. Vietnam vets were probably the first group I know of where people started to truly acknowledge the PTSD they dealt with.

“In 1980, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) added PTSD to the third edition of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) nosologic classification scheme (2). Although controversial when first introduced, the PTSD diagnosis has filled an important gap in psychiatric theory and practice. From an historical perspective, the significant change ushered in by the PTSD concept was the stipulation that the etiological agent was outside the individual (i.e., a traumatic event) rather than an inherent individual weakness (i.e., a traumatic neurosis). The key to understanding the scientific basis and clinical expression of PTSD is the concept of "trauma."”

Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 5/28/18 10:12pm JakeGould:

Also, 1980 or so—right after PTSD was formally recognized—Reagan cut mental health funding. So it’s such bullshit… In the 1980s you really still had tons of Vietnam war veterans all over. And then Reagan does that?

Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 5/28/18 10:16pm JakeGould:

Also, if you think about it, the whole “wild west” that has be so romanticized in the world is based on ex Civil War soldiers just being kicked out into the world on their own. So you have all of these crazed ex-soldiers basically becoming mercenaries in the wild west of the 1800s.

The Sergio Leone westerns really did a decent job of connecting the Civil War to the cowboy B.S. happening at the time.

  Mon. 5/28/18 10:27pm herb.nyc:

vg Donovan song. I'm reminded of pete seeger's "waist deep in the big muddy". Wiki says: The song tells the story of a platoon wading in a river in Louisiana on a practice patrol in 1942. Imperiously ignoring his sergeant's concerns, the captain orders the platoon to continue with himself in the lead until they are finally up to their necks. Suddenly, the captain drowns and the sergeant instantly orders the unit to turn back to the original shore. It turns out the captain was not aware that the river was deeper with a joining stream upriver. The narrator declines to state an obvious moral but intimates from what he has read in the paper that his nation itself is being led into similar peril by authoritarian fools. Each verse ends with a line noting that "the big fool said to push on" except for the final verse, which changes to the present tense, and the fourth verse which says "the captain dead and gone." The story is similar to the Ribbon Creek incident, which occurred in 1956.

Another Pete Seeger song, off same record as "waist deep..." is "my name is leeza kalvedge"(sp?). Lyrics are via a letter a California woman wrote to protest the nearby bomb factory, early 1960s. Relatedly, she grew up in Germany during the Holocaust. A very chilling and inspiring song. It brings tears to my eyes (I'm a wimp).

@coelacanth. Album is called (wait for it...) "waist deep...", and I forgot - it has the song "last night I had the strangest dream" as well. Ugh, I don't know where my cd is.

Thanks herb...i actually just found it!
  Mon. 5/28/18 11:07pm devlawn:

I thought that was the best part of the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 5/28/18 11:08pm TDK60:

It was written by Buffy Sainte Marie. One way of looking at war; still a good song and track by Donovan.
  Mon. 5/28/18 11:08pm devlawn:

I thought the problems about Universal Solider would have been who did a better cover?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 5/28/18 11:11pm Mayuko:

Glad you dig, geezerette!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 5/28/18 11:12pm Mayuko:

@devlawn @TDK60 Yah. It is a powerful song, which was basically the reason I thought of playing it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 5/28/18 11:13pm Ivan:

Donavan's is very close to Buffy Sainte-Marie's original. I feel it has a bit more power/relevance with a Native woman sining it. btw Great Show Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 5/28/18 11:13pm Mayuko:

@Danne there's no cookie and no phone screener and no phone and no Dave!!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 5/28/18 11:13pm coelacanth∅:

(actually a Buffy Sainte-Marie song)
i just feel for the vets and what they went -and maybe are still going through; regardless of whether i agree with their reasoning or not. ...and i've known some vets that quite regretted joining the military, though they generally wont say that straight out.
- of course it's not them responsible for creating the situation; but it is true that if everyone refused to participate the warmongers wouldn't be able to proceed in their shenanigans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 5/28/18 11:14pm Mayuko:

Ivan! Glad to have you here! I wish I owned the original!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 5/28/18 11:18pm TDK60:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 5/28/18 11:20pm coelacanth∅:

i know a guy who lost his leg -up to the hip, in vietnam, and when one of the bushes was manipulating the country into one of several wars (or is it all one war?) this man was totally behind it. i don't understand it and i can't get behind it, but we still are friendly. i choose this, despite some other friends shunning him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 5/28/18 11:20pm Mayuko:

@coelacanth∅ I think I understand how you feel. It's already painful and it bugs me that to sing that way would just add more pain there. I guess nothing is simple.

Music is going in a new direction. So for something completely different, my cat has shat twice, within 3 hours. Both are healthy solid poops. Yay. -- I saw an episode of "unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" earlier - a character says "...pees and poops from that area of the body? No, I'm not gonna have sex ever!"(paraphrased)

I have a relative who what a door gunner on a Huey in 'Nam when he was eighteen years old. He told me when he was in country he was doing three missions a day and scared shitless the whole time. Let's just say he is a little shaky to this day. But when I think of what I was doing when I was eighteen, I thank my lucky stars that mess was deescalating when I had to sign up for the draft. Still, The constant images of the war made me so curios about Viet Nam, as soon as I could, I got my ass over there. I'm still haunted by what I saw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 5/28/18 11:38pm Mayuko:
