Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 12:11pm Rich in Washington:

the first time I ever got blackout drunk as a youth, I woke up to this record on my headphones playing side two over and over on my cheapo automatic turntable. It must've played over 100 times, easily. I somehow escaped having any kind of hangover whatsoever and I accredit it to Funhouse.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 12:11pm V Priceless:

yo yo yo Uncle M!

Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 12:22pm Rich in Washington:

Geez, it's on fire today, Michael!
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 12:22pm Uncle Michael:

the Stiffs Live tour doc?
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 12:25pm Rich in Washington:

Yeah. If it ain't stiff, etc...
Just recently heard of it.. Sounds interesting, but with everyone being a documentary filmmaker these days, it's hard to separate the wheat for the chaff, so to speak.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 12:25pm Rich in Washington:

from. stupid stubby fingers.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 12:25pm Uncle Michael:

It's more home movie than documentary, but I really enjoyed it for what it was.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 12:31pm Jeff Golick:

I am interested in a new Betty Davis doc that I was just reading about yesterday
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 12:31pm Rich in Washington:

That sounds marvelous...
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 12:32pm Jeff Golick:

Can't find the article, but here's the trailer: vimeo.com...
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 12:33pm Rich in NC:

Hello all,,, hey Uncle Michael,!
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 12:33pm burke:

That's a lot of gravel. Then again, gravel always seems to vanish when you spread it out.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 12:34pm Rich in Washington:

I need some gravel. Yeah, it's amazing how thin it gets once you spread it out.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 12:35pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

Sooo ready for a Betty Davis doc!!
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 12:37pm Jeff Golick:

Oh, here's that Betty Davis doc piece I read - from the NYer: www.newyorker.com...

A Beach Boys knockoff
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 12:38pm doctorjazz:

Hey, Happy Birthday UM!
Saw the Bill Frisell doc, liked it a lot (more music than many docs have, my general problem with music docs is that they skimp on the music)
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 12:39pm Uncle Michael:

Rich! burke!

Thanks, Doc.

Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 12:43pm burke:

Tomorrow might be too glorious outside to catch a doc at Chicago Cultural Center about the Chinese Exclusion Acts, but I have no other plans.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 12:47pm Roberto:

Howdy Unc and Unc-ites. It's been a rough week (and it's not over yet) but I'm happy to be here with y'all.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 12:48pm doctorjazz:

Hitting the road, great weekend all!
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 12:48pm Uncle Michael:

Roberto! Welcome. We offer shelter from the storm.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 12:49pm Uncle Michael:

see ya, Doc!
  Fri. 5/18/18 12:53pm Dean:

The Chicago Cultural Center is screening Blazing Saddles?

[Joke, of course. Would love to see the Chinese Exclusion Act film.]

Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 12:56pm Roberto:

Thanks for having me, Unc!
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 12:56pm Webhamster Henry:

Irwin gave me a compilation with about 20 Powerhouses on it once! But I don't think it has this Spike Jones on it.

Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 12:57pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 12:58pm Webhamster Henry:

Hi Michael! I'll be in and out - I'm running some errands!
  Fri. 5/18/18 12:59pm dan:

All the music played on today's programs are a trillion times better than that sorry excuse "This Is America" by Donald "Childish Gambino" Glover. That just entered my top 10 worst songs list ever.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:00pm Listening Out There:

Give the Summer a Drum
  Fri. 5/18/18 1:01pm dan:

Living in NYC, I never bothered to learn properly how to drive
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:02pm Webhamster Henry:

I just checked and Irwin did include it....
Fri. 5/18/18 1:02pm Alex in Illinois:

University Professor! I knew it!
  Fri. 5/18/18 1:02pm Dean:

I bus to work. There's a stop one block from my house and a stop virtually at my school's doorstep. Still, the thinned student population is nice, though my school offers intensive courses for professional international students beginning immediately after graduation weekend.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:05pm Dominick:

Hoo Boy!
  Fri. 5/18/18 1:06pm dan:

In my neighborhood, you have these "fast and furious" drivers who zigzag on the highway like it's a race course. That has scared me off of highway driving.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:07pm Uncle Michael:

L.O.T.! Alex (nope, not an academic)! Dominick!
  Fri. 5/18/18 1:08pm Dean:

My residential street has speed bumps, one directly in front of our house. This is a no-win situation. When drivers slow down in front of our house, as they tend to do, I wonder for a split second why they're scoping out the place. When they don't slow down, I fear for pedestrians.
  Fri. 5/18/18 1:10pm dan:

Rare Rolling Stones. Amazing.
  Fri. 5/18/18 1:10pm dan:

This song probably became Tumbling Dice.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:10pm Roberto:

This sounds like Good Time Dice.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:11pm Jeff Golick:

Or Tumbling Women.
  Fri. 5/18/18 1:11pm Stevel:

Good lord. Just off of an hour-plus call with a financial advisor. Important, helpful, yet tedious. Take me away with your best meaningless musical selections!
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:11pm The Oscar:

Good Time Women : Tumbling Dice :: Laurel : Yanny
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:13pm Uncle Michael:

Steve! Oscar!
  Fri. 5/18/18 1:13pm dan:

Hey UM, you should a show devoted to demo recordings of famous songs.
  Fri. 5/18/18 1:16pm Stevel:

Title it, Demolicious! You'll thank me later!
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:16pm Rich in Washington:

Gawd. For some reason, I have really been digging this era of country music. This was the stuff I remember growing up in the rural podunk of my childhood. My family hated this kind of music, too. But it just seemed inescapable.
I sure do like it now, to the continued consternation of my missus and some of my friends.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:17pm The Oscar:

Back in college I briefly had a show that was all demos, alt-takes, covers, parodies, mashups-- basically, anything but the best-known version of any given song. The show's name was "Attack of the Clones."
  Fri. 5/18/18 1:18pm Dean:

Sounds like you're playing the a-side to the state b-side.
  Fri. 5/18/18 1:18pm Dean:

Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:20pm Uncle Michael:

More importantly, I have no fucking clue what I'm playing right now.
  Fri. 5/18/18 1:23pm Dean:

Well, add that remark to the comments column. For the sake of accuracy.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:24pm Uncle Michael:

  Fri. 5/18/18 1:25pm Dean:

Web divers of generations to come will thank and honor you.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:25pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:28pm Uncle Michael:

Hey, it's Pat!
  Fri. 5/18/18 1:28pm dan:

I wonder if any of these amateur musicians know that their one song is being played on some free form station or has even been released on a compilation.
  Fri. 5/18/18 1:29pm Dean:

Looks like some of Soffrok went on to have musical careers. One of them wrote Australian TV show theme songs, e.g., Family Feud.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:30pm barrett785:

Free Friday show the 25th at Crossroads w/ a Stevie Nicks tribute act. Holler!
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:30pm Uncle Michael:

amateur musicians?
  Fri. 5/18/18 1:30pm Dean:

One of them joined Air Supply, allegedly. (Don't want to defame the guy.)
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:32pm northguineahills:

Gracias, UM, y feliz cumpleanos!
  Fri. 5/18/18 1:32pm dan:

Some guy even compared the Soffrok song to EJ's Country Comfort.
  Fri. 5/18/18 1:33pm Dean:

Somebody really needs to put together an all-male tribute to all-female AC/DC tribute bands.
  Fri. 5/18/18 1:34pm Dean:

You know, AHe/DHe.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:34pm The Oscar:

Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:36pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Hi! Great Stones track.
  Fri. 5/18/18 1:37pm Dean:

The apex, right here, Bach's 'cello suites.
  Fri. 5/18/18 1:38pm Dean:

(That was not an Elton John-in-gorilla-suit pun.)
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:38pm Uncle Michael:

  Fri. 5/18/18 1:39pm dan:

There should be more of an appreciation for classical music and a condemnation of "This Is America".
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:40pm Uncle Michael:

It's a shame I don't have a copy of This Is America handy.
  Fri. 5/18/18 1:42pm dan:

If it were up to me, I'd take every last copy of "This Is America" from the MP3 files to the poorly made music video and have them destroyed.
  Fri. 5/18/18 1:45pm Dean:

You realize, @dan, that you'll only make the song more alluring?
  Fri. 5/18/18 1:47pm dan:

Unfortunately yes. I'd take 500 straight listens of "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" over one of "TIA" any day, week and year.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:47pm Uncle Michael:

He is.
  Fri. 5/18/18 1:49pm Dean:

Was humming AWSOP just this morning as I strolled from the bus stop. There's Procol Harum in the air, I guess.

Read an article yesterday about how the guy who did the paintings that became the cover illustrations for Aqualung got stiffed. Ian Anderson didn't want to hear anything about it.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:50pm Uncle Michael:

He didn't get stiffed. I read it too.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:51pm The Oscar:

I'm not sure I'd heard of Gasolin' until I went record shopping in Denmark. They're EVERYWHERE over there.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:51pm Uncle Michael:

rightly so!
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:52pm jmd:

Hello Uncle. Never heard Cellophane Brain before. Cool and weird and a string section, of course. Nice, thanks.
  Fri. 5/18/18 1:53pm dan:

Apparently, Gaslolin retained the services of Queen producer Roy Thomas Baker.
  Fri. 5/18/18 1:53pm Dean:

He was paid what would amount to ~$11k in 2018 dollars, sure. But the deal in 1970 was a handshake, and the cover image, the copyright to which likely remains his, has been reproduced a gazillion times since. I do think his son, who wrote the article, seemed a little whiny.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:54pm The Oscar:

Kinda wishing I picked some up now. This is pretty solid.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:55pm Uncle Michael:

  Fri. 5/18/18 1:56pm dan:

The Aqualung Artist, Burton Silverman is almost 90 years old and still makes his money doing portraits.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 1:57pm Uncle Michael:

Dean, as far as I can tell, it was work for hire and he didn't retain any rights, contractually. They didn't by a painting, they commissioned an illustration.
  Fri. 5/18/18 2:00pm Dean:

Work for hire only applies when the artist is an employee working within the scope of his/her employment. According to Silverman, who was not an employee of Chrysalis or Tull's management, there was no contract. Not good business sense, for sure, but these circumstances don't affect copyright.
  Fri. 5/18/18 2:02pm Dean:

Now, it could be that pre-1976 Copyright Act required registration to claim copyright. If that's so, then the outcome could be different. The article didn't address any of this.
  Fri. 5/18/18 2:04pm Dean:

[There are exceptions to the work made for hire rules that permit non-employees to produce them, but I'm pretty sure they require a written contract.]

I think Clay Pigeon is singing along with Bad Company right now, wherever he may be.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 2:07pm Uncle Michael:

Betsy! I sure hope so.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 2:09pm The Oscar:

Donnie Darko is a movie that I loved in high school when it came out, but which I'm terrified won't hold up to a rewatch.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 2:09pm Uncle Michael:

It might not.

Carne asada? Chicken? Al Pastor?
  Fri. 5/18/18 2:35pm Dean:

I once had a taco de sesos at LA's King Taco. Brains. Explains why I'm so smatr.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 2:36pm Uncle Michael:

Al Pastor if they do it for real on a vertical rotisserie.
  Fri. 5/18/18 2:36pm dan:

Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 2:44pm Rich in Washington:

I sure wished we had the taco trucks on every street corner and a real president.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 2:45pm Rich in Washington:

We only have one taco stand in my town that does pastor meat right.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 2:47pm Rich in Washington:

Most ones around here, if they even HAVE al pastor on their menus, they just take regular carnitas meat and slather it with a sort of al pastor like sauce. Not the same as the long marinated and roasted pork.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 2:47pm Uncle Michael:

The place that's opening is a mexican grocery and restaurant that has three locations in Kansas City. There store here will be bigger tan any of the others. The store isn't opening for another 2-3 weeks. They've spent 13 months remodeling a derelict supermarket that had been closed for over 15 years.
  Fri. 5/18/18 2:51pm Dean:

My favorite Mexican place in these parts--there are more in Southern California--is Mercado del Sol in Concord, which entails a bit of a drive for us. Not sure on which axis they prepare their pastor, but the complete package is wonderful.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 2:52pm burke:

Makes me imagine how much more dereliction the urban midwest would have if it weren't for the Mexican demographic boom of the past couple decades.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 2:54pm Uncle Michael:

ain't that the truth
  Fri. 5/18/18 2:55pm Dean:

I'm thinking now of a joint in Pico Rivera, east of LA, where my mother-in-law went to buy masa one Christmas. It was a restaurant and, being in LA County, it was required to post a health dep't ranking (A, B, etc.). There was no posting, but the clientele when we arrived were county sheriffs. A good sign. The chile verde was out of this world.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 2:58pm Sem:

Lovin' the spins, and the chat is engrossing as well. See you and the H-D crowd next time round the block. Later, UM, and all.
Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 3:00pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks everyone. See you all back here next week!
  Fri. 5/18/18 3:02pm dan:

Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 3:05pm burke:

Avatar Fri. 5/18/18 3:06pm Uncle Michael:
