Gaaah! Bad one-two punch, but glad the missus got quickly rehired.

Just sidlin' in to take a seat neat the door. Missed the opening gambits.

Great start to the show, Mayuko. Ooops.

@UM! @Brian in UK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 9:14am Jeff Golick:

@UM, if that's wrong, I don't want to be right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 9:16am Brian in UK:

Had some Italian sausage this morning, every time I opened the 'fridge, it proposed to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 9:18am Uncle Michael:

it must have been drunk
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 9:21am Jeff Golick:

I would like to propose to the beginning of this Sara Serpa song.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 9:22am Jeff Golick:

Good afternoon to you, @fred!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 9:23am Jeff Golick:

It's entirely possible, @UM. I do not know which way is up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 9:27am fred:

I saw Joe McPhee this week! He played with Paul Lovens and Jean-Marc Foussat, and it was a good set. The guy isn't slowing down much, he could even pull off wearing a "Joe McPhee" jacket
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 9:28am Jeff Golick:

So great, @fred. Jealous!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 9:31am fred:

I like this Aaa a lot. I have never seen Susie Ibarra, I'd love to fix that
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 9:33am Andrew Waterloo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 9:33am Andrew Waterloo:

I've already seen one Easter basket filled with tooth brushes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 9:34am Jeff Golick:

She is wonderful - doesn't play out enough, though.

The Vision Festival is coming up in May - thinking of going one night or two. This is the William Parker-Patricia Nicolson-organized music fest. Dave Burrell is the main honoree.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 9:35am Jeff Golick:

Helloo, @Andrew Waterloo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 9:35am Jeff Golick:

(@Andrew, I am sure the kids found that hysterical.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 9:37am Brian in UK:

Always look after your teeth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 9:38am fred:

@Jeff: You should go! Didn't you say you wanted to see half as many shows than I do? (I saw six this week: three dance shows and three concerts in five days. I took a break on Wednesday though, I'm getting too old for this)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 9:39am Jeff Golick:

Yah I need to get out - to that or anything else.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 9:39am Uncle Michael:

Something distinctly Yiddishekeit about this Marty Ehrlich.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 9:43am Jeff Golick:

Yah. His take on an old theme.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 9:44am Jeff Golick:

He covers Rabbi Zimmerman elsewhere on the same album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 9:46am Brian in UK:

Some acoustic guitarists seem inward looking. Davy Graham could never be accused of that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 9:49am listener james from westwood:

That's when, during the Seder reading, you announce every last Old Testament figure involved.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 9:49am Uncle Michael:

Jeff, that story reminds me of the Phil Schaap riffing I triggered on Friday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 9:53am Jeff Golick:

@ljfw: HA! "...and Joseph begat...?

@UM: "triggered" is the right word, I think.
  Sun. 4/1/18 9:56am Doctorjazz:

Morning all! Happy whatever it is your way!
Beat from the Seder, just going to schlep for a while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 9:59am Uncle Michael:

Where are you going, Doc? Is it much of a schlep from here?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:00am Jeff Golick:

Howdy, @Doctorjazz. Might as well keep reclining.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:02am Uncle Michael:

Moses was heard to say, "Oy, the promised land? But it's such a schlep."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:02am doctorjazz:

No place to go had 22 at the house last night much straightening up to do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:03am Uncle Michael:

22? Not even Elijah could find the afikoman...too crowded.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:04am doctorjazz:

I think I have to pick up this Dennis Gonzalez, lovely stuff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:07am Jeff Golick:

I don't think there's a bad Dennis Gonzalez album out there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:08am doctorjazz:

Haven't heard this Uri Caine in a while, saw him do his Mozart bit at the old Knitting Factory years ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:13am doctorjazz:

UM... Never underestimate 10 year old boys to pull off the Afikomen heist!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:20am Brian in UK:

I wish Ry Cooder had added surface noise to his recordings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:22am Jeff Golick:

@Brian, you'll have to talk to Joe McGasko about that.

(sorry for the inside joke)
  Sun. 4/1/18 10:29am Dean:

'Tis the season for Slapp Happy's take on Handel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:30am Jeff Golick:

@Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:34am doctorjazz:

This Lindberg is great musically, and a great sounding track! Who says the 80s sucked for jazz?

Avatar Sun. 4/1/18 10:36am glenn:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:37am fred:

the 80's sucked, for music and the rest
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:38am Brian in UK:

Our twin daughters were born in the Eighties. What can I say. Stay poor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:38am doctorjazz:

I just started listening to jazz in the 80s, lots of fine stuff came out (the Black Saint label, and it's sister Soul Note, put out a lot of it)
Avatar Sun. 4/1/18 10:40am glenn:

oh boy. will the golick's college road trip be like the soprano's college road trip?
  Sun. 4/1/18 10:42am Doug Schulkind:

We’re having deviled eggs for Easter. Is that so terribly wrong? Blessedly I am home as today is one of only two days in the year that Truscuitville is closed. Such great sounds, Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:42am doctorjazz:

{really started in the mid 70s, but I went all out when the 80s hit... First time I had any disposable income)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:43am Uncle Michael:

No decade sucked for music.
  Sun. 4/1/18 10:43am Dean:

Amen to that, @UM.
Avatar Sun. 4/1/18 10:45am glenn:

i've heard the 1770's wasn't great, but whaddaiknow?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:46am Jeff Golick:

If you'll pardon the self-plug, the D:O blog of yore tried to readjust perceptions of jazz in the 80s: destination-out.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:46am Jeff Golick:

Also, @Doug! Home at last! @glenn! I certainly hope not!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:46am Brian in UK:

Why this decade stuff.

Glenn 1770 was the year Beethoven was born.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:47am doctorjazz:

The engineer on this Passion placed instruments oddly... Sort of Beatles stereo, with the drummer getting center stage (drummer must have been his buddy...)
Avatar Sun. 4/1/18 10:48am glenn:

okay, he was born, but when did he start composing? i rest my case.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:48am Brian in UK:

Jeff, Bill Fay, you can close the show now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:49am Uncle Michael:

In what decade did he start decomposing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:49am sberger:

Wildflowers compilations, for those that don't know, is a great place to start to see how great jazz was in the 70's. Oh, and a belated good morning and Happy Easter/AFD/Passover all...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:51am fred:

You're right, it's just my taste in music that sucked in the 80's. High school years, you know
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:52am Jeff Golick:

Thanks for that @sberger, and howdy!

I keep threatening (to myself) to do a loft jazz show, and imagine that when/if it happens, I'll just play the whole Wildflowers set.
     Sun. 4/1/18 10:54am Listener Robert:

Which number on the playlist was that "Home on the Range" that came up very early in the program? Funny the melodies it was sung to. I caught some "Popeye the Sailor Man" in it, wondering how many other quotes it contained.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:56am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Listener Robert! I am honestly a little stumped by your question...maybe the Sara Serpa vocal tune?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:56am Brian in UK:

Some say the same about Reggae in the Seventies being untouchable.
Pop in the Sixties.
Mom in the Fifties!
Maybe Jazz is the biggest unrecognised religion.
Avatar Sun. 4/1/18 10:57am glenn:

speaking of good music from the 80's...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:58am listener james from westwood:

Indeed ... mmmm, early R.E.M. ....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 10:58am Andrew Waterloo:

the 80s had good music, it's also where a lot of good 70s music went bad.
  Sun. 4/1/18 10:59am Listener Gregory:

Is this really from Murmur? Because I can understand the words. That has never happened before.
  Sun. 4/1/18 11:00am Dean:

Bingo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:00am Uncle Michael:

I know all the words to the Chronic Town EP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:00am Jeff Golick:

Two words: "gated reverb"
  Sun. 4/1/18 11:01am Dean:

I listened yesterday to the entire Hogwood-conducted Messiah, featuring as one of the vocalists the mom of a woman with whom I work.
     Sun. 4/1/18 11:01am Listener Robert:

@ Jeff Golick, did I just imagine a piece on this show where the lyrics of "Home on the Range" were sung to a different melody? Could it have been on the curated GTD stream just before DO started?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:01am Uncle Michael:

I keep fearing that we're one turn of the worm away from a spate of nostalgic gated reverb retro production.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:02am doctorjazz:

Rev!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:02am Uncle Michael:

Robert, that was indeed right before the show started.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:02am Jeff Golick:

@LR: I suspect that may be the case - a song from before the show
  Sun. 4/1/18 11:02am Dean:

No love for Slapp Happy on the playlist?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:03am Jeff Golick:

Always trying to best the automated playlist Doug put together, never quite getting there: the GTDR DJ curse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:04am Jeff Golick:

@Dean: eep. Hang on a sec.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:04am Uncle Michael:

I don't have that problem. I just have to best Doug.
     Sun. 4/1/18 11:04am Listener Robert:

Thanks, both of you expert streaming DJs.

BTW, I have a Little Golden Records 78 of Jack Mercer singing "Popeye the Sailor Man".
  Sun. 4/1/18 11:04am Dean:

We can Handel the truth.
Avatar Sun. 4/1/18 11:05am glenn:

Gentlemen know your place in the firmament.
     Sun. 4/1/18 11:07am Listener Robert:

Can I take it there's no listener-accessible playlist from the curated GTD stream?
     Sun. 4/1/18 11:08am Listener Robert:

I do seem to recall, though, that the titles show up while they're playing in the meta-data on my player.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:08am Brian in UK:

Here's an old one. our dog's favourite composer is Bach.
Could not get Palestrina into a joke.

@LR there is but I cannot remember how to get there.

Father: Because of Jeff. Because of Jeff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:22am doctorjazz:

Nice, light-hearted show today (this makes me think of Dylan's TOM Thumb Blues)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:22am Uncle Michael:

We're all grateful that you found your look, Jeff.
  Sun. 4/1/18 11:24am Artie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:25am fred:

I remember seeing the Moonchild project 5 years ago or so. Nice, but I was much more into the Electric Masada set that same day (with Ikue Mori)
     Sun. 4/1/18 11:28am Listener Robert:

Thanks for the help. If the documentation is correct, this is a find. It says the Jules Allen version was from 1928. Wikipedia says "I'm Popeye The Sailor Man was, composed by Sammy Lerner in 1933. So Lerner may have lifted this one for the melody.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:29am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @Artie! And to you!
  Sun. 4/1/18 11:30am Dean:

Electric Masada were amazing at SF's short-lived Yoshi's a few years ago.

Was at Down Home Records yesterday. They were spinning this Miles & Coltrane record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:30am Jeff Golick:

That's some good sleuthing, @LR.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:31am Jeff Golick:

Dig the crowd reaction as Coltrane really leans into this solo...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:32am Uncle Michael:

Trane clearly has somewhere else to be.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:33am doctorjazz:

Few bands (to me) as exciting as the acoustic Masada with Dave Douglas, loved their shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:33am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, and he's on his way there!
  Sun. 4/1/18 11:34am Listener Gregory:

There's so much sound from Trane, it's almost like it's coming in sheets, like rain!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:36am Jeff Golick:

Trane (on the length of his solos): I don't know how to stop.
Miles: Try taking the fucking horn out of your mouth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:36am Jeff Golick:

(as quoted in many, many places)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:36am Uncle Michael:

What a document. This band could only nurture Trane's voice until it could no longer contain it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:37am doctorjazz:

Miles is supposed to have just turned Trane loose hoping he'd stay in his band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:37am Jeff Golick:

I imagine Wynton Kelly just glaring at Trane through this solo.
  Sun. 4/1/18 11:37am Listener Gregory:

Well, I wondered whether it could possibly be worth it to get more out-takes of this group, but it sounds like it is. [Sound of empty wallet flapping in the wind.]
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:38am Uncle Michael:

This piano solo is what, like a sorbet after vindaloo? TRY and cleanse this palette.

@doctorjazz: There was also an Acoustic Masada set that day, with Dave Douglas. It was kind of a Zorn fest, 10 different sets spread over 8 hours or so
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:39am Jeff Golick:

Apparently, the Trane solos on this bootleg set get more contained as it goes along, perhaps at Miles' behest, but I haven't gotten beyond the first disc yet. THIS IS THE FIRST SONG ON IT.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:39am doctorjazz:

@Fred...now THERE'S my idea of heaven...
  Sun. 4/1/18 11:39am Listener Gregory:

@UncleM It sounds like music from two different centuries in a mash-up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:42am northguineahills:

Somehow crash-landed here, thanks to the stars....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:43am Jeff Golick:

We're friendly. Hiya, @northguineahills!

Oops... Sorry (seems to work on my phone). Talks about Trane being unhappy on the tour. Audiences not loving the exploration of Trane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:49am fred:

@doctorjazz: that Zorn fest program: Illuminations, The Holy Visions, The Alchemist, The Concealed, Acoustic Masada, The Dreamers, Bar Kokhba Sextet, The Song Project, Moonchild, Electric Masada
  Sun. 4/1/18 11:50am Dean:

Just realized I have part of this new set on a Europe1 4CD set, half with Coltrane, half with Sonny Stitt. A real bootleg, no doubt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:50am doctorjazz:

Fred, you're killing me! Sounds wonderful !
     Sun. 4/1/18 11:51am Listener Robert:

I see there's an instructional cassette, also available (stream on demand?) from the National Library Service for the blind: Lerner, Sammy Makin' Up a Song as I Go Along CBM 604/605 Sammy Lerner, lyricist for Hoagy Carmichael and Jay Gorney, tells of writing the song "Popeye the Sailor Man." Maybe somebody has the time & resources here to find out whether he ripped this one off or what.
  Sun. 4/1/18 11:51am Dean:

By "this new set" I meant the Miles/Trane thing, obvs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:51am northguineahills:

Feliz Pascua todos! (Friday I learned the word for Passover and Easter is identical en espanol. You'd think I would have caught on earlier, as my wife and I have been to Seders in the past)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:51am doctorjazz:

There was a Miles/Trane vinyl bootleg "In Stockholm" that I have.
  Sun. 4/1/18 11:53am Doug Schulkind:

Doug’s wife: I can’t believe he’s playing A Love Supreme.

Doug: Why?

Doug’s wife: isn’t that shockingly mainstream for FMU? Like playing Madonna.

Doug: No.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:53am Jeff Golick:

Elvin Jones is a straight-up monster.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:54am Jeff Golick:

@Doug: HA! Though I did think to myself, "Nothin' but the hits!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:54am northguineahills:

I play Madonna at home, zarathustra knows what else I play.
  Sun. 4/1/18 11:54am Doug Schulkind:

Doug’s wife: Don’t get me wrong. I love A Love Supreme. I have it on my phone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:54am fred:

@Doug: so you'll be playing Madonna next week?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:55am northguineahills:

Time to hit the garden, if I don't get back, thanks Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:55am Brian in UK:

Not playing ALS would be mainstream.
Oh very witty, Oscar.

I never got past Borderline.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:56am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @ngh! One day we'll all get back to the garden.
  Sun. 4/1/18 11:56am Dean:

Taco Bell should license Coltrane for ads. "You'll LOVE the new burrito SUPREME!"
  Sun. 4/1/18 11:57am Dean:

That first Madonna LP is pretty damn good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:57am Jeff Golick:

I'm a bit surprised to see that I've only played one other part of this during the whole run of D:O Radio.
  Sun. 4/1/18 11:58am Doug Schulkind:

@fred
This is an absolutely true story. I once played Madonna on my show, about 20 years ago. And the WFMU Music director received a telephone death threat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:58am northguineahills:

Before that first album, Madonna was a regular in the dowtown scene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:58am fred:

I'm confused: Doug talks about playing Madonna and Jeff wants to go back to Soundgarden
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 11:59am northguineahills:

Ilarfed, fred.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 12:01pm Brian in UK:

WFMU, where pop is avant garde, and avant garde is pop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 12:02pm fred:

Thanks Jeff!
  Sun. 4/1/18 12:02pm Listener Gregory:

Jeff, may your show be resurrected when your son is done touring colleges. Hear you then!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/1/18 12:02pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, Jeff.
