This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 6:53pm Flash Strap:

Hi Doc! You even beat me here this time
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 6:57pm Flash Strap:

let's get rolling
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 7:02pm Flash Strap:

This LP is a well I can't quit drawing from
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 7:06pm listener james from westwood:

Evening, evening, Flash and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 7:06pm northguineahills:

Did you get my email, Evan?
  Thu. 2/22/18 7:06pm zonk ludlow:

Evening Flash & fellow explorers. Trust all are n the mood for a good freak out.
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 7:08pm Flash Strap:

Listener James! hello!

NGH! I did, sorry I haven't written you back yet. The matter in question looks like it sounds amazing

Zonk my man! Good to have you in the room and ready to freak out

welcome all!
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 7:13pm Flash Strap:

next track up might be the most on-brand thing I could play as a Give the Drummer boy. but I really feel like playing it... and anyway it's a good thing to be Very Much a Drummer
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 7:16pm Flash Strap:

the drums... on this... are good
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 7:19pm northguineahills:

Ok, just making sure your email hadn't changed recently.
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 7:19pm Flash Strap:

no, i'm just bad at emails a lot of the time and let them pile up on me
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 7:23pm northguineahills:

This Art Blakey is new to me, wow! (art blakey himself isn't new to me, obviously).

I only do emails once a week unless I expect something, so I understand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 7:24pm doctorjazz:

the Blakey is CRAZY, don't know this either (checked Discogs for personnel, but it is not correct, or at least I don't think so, no sax listed)
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 7:25pm Flash Strap:

Orgy in Rhythm 1&2 are some of the best percussion recordings ever laid down, ever. Super highly recommended to any and all

Sabu is among the personnel, I know. I'll link a lineup: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 7:27pm Flash Strap:

I am completely obsessed with this Gil Evans track, by the time it plays out you probably will be too
  Thu. 2/22/18 7:29pm zonk ludlow:

I'm with ya Flash, my fave version of Spoonful. The album title gives it away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 7:31pm northguineahills:

I'm tigger bouncing away in about 5 mins. gotta hit the agriculture store for more gardening supplies. If I don't make it back (I need a pint), thanks Evan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 7:32pm northguineahills:

It's not even 10pm and I'm leaving work, I didn't take the brown acid today ;) !
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 7:32pm Flash Strap:

@Zonk: mine too. it's actually fairly new to me, I've been trying to catch up on my Gil Evans and when this turned up I was utterly transfixed, and became ecstatic. like a religious moment. he's such a master, but this might be his masterpiece
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 7:32pm Flash Strap:

well tiggers are wonderful things, but I hate to see ya go NGH! have a great pint
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 7:45pm Flash Strap:

great cover: 4.bp.blogspot.com...

Sam Fan Thomas' first solo LP, this. He's from Cameroon, it was recorded in Benin

Hello Hyde!
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 7:58pm Flash Strap:

great to see you
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 7:59pm Doug Schulkind:

I saw Sam Fan Thomas in the early-ish '80s in New York. One of the first live African shows I can remember attending.

Flash Strap, your opening set performed open heart surgery on my ears. In a good way.
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 8:00pm Flash Strap:

Hi Doug! So happy to be your attending surgeon on this fine night

would love to have that Sam Fan memory, must have been incredible
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 8:02pm Flash Strap:

INSANE guitar on this track

not sure, but I think one of them is Berkley Jones, who played in BLO, Ofege, the Funkees, and others. quite a performance
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 8:03pm Flash Strap:

great use of moog too
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 8:10pm melinda:

hi all
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 8:12pm Flash Strap:

Hi Melinda! How goes it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 8:14pm βrian:

I'm almost sure that's Jebediah Burkhalter on lead guitar, but I could be wrong.
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 8:17pm Flash Strap:

Hi Brian! Which track are you referring to?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 8:19pm βrian:

Oh, you know ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 8:22pm melinda:

Hangin' in there!
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 8:22pm Flash Strap:

i wonder if i am missing the gist of a monkeyshine
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 8:25pm Flash Strap:

Ofege always has cool guitar
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 8:26pm still b/p:

The Gist Of A Monkeyshine sounds like an American play from the mid-20th century.
I was listening to something else and lost track of Explorer time...and then had to let Eydie Gorme finish.
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 8:28pm Flash Strap:

Hi there B/P!
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 8:31pm Flash Strap:

This song rules insanely hard
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 8:36pm still b/p:

So "proposal jam" is a thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 8:39pm doctorjazz:

Is this jazz quartet the Asiko Rock Group? (I feel like the track listings don't match what's playing there days)?
Anyway, time to hit the road, leave the office, take you to the car, thanks, Evan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 8:39pm βrian:

Would that be akin to premature proposition?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 8:43pm Doug Schulkind:

Things a get from badd to baddder in the Exlporers Room!
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 8:44pm Flash Strap:

Safe happy drive, Doc!

I think you might have been hearing the Bembeya Jazz Nat'l btw
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 8:44pm still b/p:

Those Ethiopians had an Irish reel parallelishness rolling.
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 8:48pm Flash Strap:

Love the Ethiopians, I think we'll hear another from them in a bit
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 8:50pm βrian:

If you ever have to choose between Injera and Irish Soda bread, though ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 8:53pm hyde:

this is killer
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 8:55pm Flash Strap:

Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 8:57pm still b/p:

Have a dance and a drink and then decide which snack will satisfy, βrian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 8:58pm jaywbabcock:

Show is ruling
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 8:59pm Flash Strap:

Hi Jay! thanks man

this track really tickles my brain area
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 9:01pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Flash; Explorers
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 9:02pm Flash Strap:

Coelacanth! hello fellow
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 9:02pm coelacanth∅:

oh, what i've missed
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 9:05pm coelacanth∅:

..."the black hippies"! never heard of them; but are you familiar with the mahotella queens' song, title's interpretation of which is "the hippies come to sowetto"? one of my favorite south african songs
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 9:06pm Flash Strap:

The Black Hippies are really good! haven't heard any Mahotella Queens, I don't think. Sounds like I need to fix that
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 9:09pm coelacanth∅:

well i already know i'm going to listen to this archive.

'much as i don't want to support youboob and rarely do, some folks put some excellent stuff up there: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 9:10pm Flash Strap:

i'll check that out after the show!
Thu. 2/22/18 9:12pm Gary via app:

Been enjoying the show tonight
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 9:12pm Flash Strap:

earlier I misspoke/mistyped that Oscalypso was written by Oscar PettiGREW – it's PettiFORD. let the record show that i am careless and often wrong
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 9:13pm Flash Strap:

Hi Gary! glad to hear!
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 9:14pm Flash Strap:

love wild fire, everything they do is so righteous and heavy. maybe the heaviest Trinidad group ever
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 9:17pm Flash Strap:

Eddie Hooper, who I think is from Surinam: " Introducing the mellow sound of new wave soca rock."
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 9:20pm still b/p:

Supposed to give up my complaining AND my stalling? ...come on, now, be reasonable.
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 9:20pm Flash Strap:

I love this track but eddie hooper is being entirely unreasonable here, i agree
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 9:22pm Flash Strap:

got an Ethiopians track coming next which will give us a dose cold reality, don't worry
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 9:27pm Doug Schulkind:

Oscar Pettiford once broke his arm playing softball with Woody Herman's band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 9:30pm coelacanth∅:

"the ethiopians" much better, in my opinion, than "the ethiopian"
(when Leonard Dillon split up the group and called himself "the ethiopian") -not impressive, what i've heard
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 9:36pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 9:36pm jaywbabcock:

Eddie Hooper!!!!! Never heard him before. Revelatory. Thank you
  Thu. 2/22/18 9:37pm zonk ludlow:

Hadn't heard of the strike in West Virginia Evan. Just did a quick search, inspiring stuff. Maybe through the courage being expressed by students in your country real change may come about. I trust it does.
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 9:41pm Flash Strap:

He's got some great stuff, Jay!

I need to look into that, C.

That's amazing, Doug

Hello yourself, most welcome Uncle!

I hope so too, Zonk. Collective action is good, solidarity with teachers is good, all power to the revolutionary youth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 9:41pm hyde:

i'm a big fan of this Cohran lp
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 9:43pm Flash Strap:

Me too! All Cohran's releases are essential in my book
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 9:47pm Doug Schulkind:

On a related note (related to Malcolm X), tomorrow is the 150th birthday of the immortal W.E.B. Du Bois!
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 9:48pm Flash Strap:

This Three Gentlemen LP is really good btw
Avatar Thu. 2/22/18 9:50pm Flash Strap:

that's a birthday worth celebrating right there
