I would say that Frank Sinatra in the Fifties sang jazz though it would not be called that. I adore Frank Sinatra singing in the mid Fifties. The way he twisted a phrase around, is that jazz of the mouth.

Nice when unexpected jazz instrument drops promptly into a positive place in ear/spirit. Jazz harp...? Never heard of Dorothy Ashby until a few years back on FMU. Immediately taken with it/her.

@Brian in UK: i think, back in the mid-late 60s those songs were considered "standards"...which is a nice catch-all phrase for that genre.. i may be wrong..

Avatar    Fri. 2/9/18 11:32am Doug Schulkind:

@Dean
It is a fine collection. 10 CDs, yes? It covers only a brief period of time, late fifties to early sixties. A fine period, but only one portion of Yusef's glorious life in music.
  Fri. 2/9/18 11:35am Dean:

Super, thanks. Yes, ten disks, 1957-61. Not sure how much it overlaps with two "complete" sets ranging from '57-'62.

Avatar    Fri. 2/9/18 11:38am Doug Schulkind:

I bet it overlaps a good bit. That period covers most of Yusef's recordings for the Savoy label.

@frenchee
I always feel a little shame talking over Mr. Rota
