I second that hear here. Hello and good evening, David.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/30/18 4:06pm David D:

Greetings Sem and everyone...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/30/18 4:07pm Stanley:

I'm here, in in the caboose!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/30/18 4:08pm doctorjazz:

Quick hi, but I'm swamped! (LOVE this Eno!)
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 4:09pm antiparticle:

Well that was soothing. (Brian Eno.)
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 4:09pm antiparticle:

Also, hi :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/30/18 4:10pm David D:

Hello Stanley, Doc, and Antiparticle - glad to see you here!
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 4:12pm antiparticle:

Glad to hear you here :) Sorry I couldn't resist, haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/30/18 4:14pm David D:

That's what we're hear for.
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 4:30pm βrian:

Good afternoon. Can't stay long, as it's almost time to catch the bus home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/30/18 4:32pm David D:

βrian: Glad you could take a subway detour.
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 4:35pm βrian:

Subways are socialist according to our Gub'ner. Along with trains. Trains are the worst. Alack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/30/18 4:42pm David D:

Does he think that's good or bad? Sorry I'm a bit out of touch over here.
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 4:43pm northguineahills:

@βrian:Hey, my guvner, Skeletor Scott vetoed a high-speed train line from Daytona to Orlando to Tampa, when the Fed money was already earmarked. w/ expansions projected to Miami and Jacksonville. At least the Central FL SunRail commuter rail that runs a good 50 miles/80km was under construction before he took office. Then again, it stops short of the airport b/c Disney wants to bilk people w/ its shuttle busses (there were plans for it to go to Disney at the airport, originally).
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 4:45pm northguineahills:

@doctorjazz: I literally live in "The Swamp" (thankfully my house isn't technically in an ecological geomorphilocgial swamp)
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 4:46pm northguineahills:

err.. geomorphological
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 4:51pm Parq:

Follwoing on NGH's comment, cars are a fundamental part of the American psyche, even more so than guns (believe it or not). That, I suspect, is the reason for GOP hostility toward mass transit of any kind. *Real* Americans get around by driving in their cars, dammit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/30/18 4:54pm David D:

Hey NGH and Parq, sounds about right. In Germany, both seem to get a lot of love.
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 4:54pm northguineahills:

There is good mass bus transit here in Gainesville, but if you're more then 5km from the downtown and/or campus, or going to the mall or one of the super wal-marts, you'll be waiting at least 20 mins.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/30/18 4:55pm Stanley:

Alpha Blondy, it's been a while since i saw him (Lausanne 1986). Thought for a second this was going to be the wonderful Easy Star All Stars. That said, Monsieur Blondy is doing a dine job.
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 4:55pm northguineahills:

David, do you have any Jah Division?
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 4:55pm northguineahills:

They are what they sound like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/30/18 4:55pm Stanley:

Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 4:55pm Parq:

David, you have no idea (or maybe you do, since you grew up here) how ardently conservative Americans envy Germany its no-speed-limit autobahns.
  Tue. 1/30/18 4:59pm Dean:

Re: cars, I loathe them. Blech. But I adore a long-running show out of Los Angeles' KPFK, The Car Show, which manages to stimulate and inform.

I also think driving should be very strictly regulated. One moving violation, you're out. No more driving.
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 5:00pm northguineahills:

@Parq: When you have ordnung ingrained into the culture, you have less of a chance of idiots accidentally, or purposely trying to kill you.
  Tue. 1/30/18 5:01pm Dean:

My neck of the woods, yesterday: http://www.berkeleyside.com/2018/01/29/1-injured-rollover-crash-downtown-berkeley/

This occurred at an intersection heavy with foot and cycle traffic.
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 5:03pm northguineahills:

I love to drive, but I prefer it not to be a necessity. I love being able to walk/bike everywhere come the weekends. i can't believe I'm saying this, but I miss the MTA.
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 5:04pm northguineahills:

@Dean: I like how that one guy had a Warhol/Velvets banana sticker on his laptop.
  Tue. 1/30/18 5:05pm Dean:

Ha! Didn't notice it 'til you mentioned it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/30/18 5:07pm David D:

There are in fact a few parties here who would like to introduce a general speed limit for the Autobahn, we shall see...
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 5:09pm Parq:

U.S. conservatives will insist that Germany's highway fatality rate is no higher than ours, or some will even say it's lower. I always wondered, so I just looked it up. According to Wikipedia, the German rate is about three times the U.S. rate.
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 5:13pm northguineahills:

On portions of I-90 in MT, the speed limit is posted as 80mph/130kmh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/30/18 5:16pm David D:

Parq: It is ridiculous to claim that higher speeds make the roads safer, whatever the statistics. Having said that, are you sure about that?
  Tue. 1/30/18 5:18pm Dean:

I'm kinda fond of the "It gets me off the road more quickly" weasley rationale for speeding.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/30/18 5:21pm David D:

Dean: There is a justification waiting to be used for just about anything.
  Tue. 1/30/18 5:22pm Dean:

Indeed. And "justification" is such a polite way of saying "excuse."
  Tue. 1/30/18 5:24pm Dean:

Steven Wright classics:

A cop stopped me for speeding. He said, "Why were you going so fast?" I said, "See this thing my foot is on? It's called an accelerator. When you push down on it, it sends more gas to the engine. The whole car just takes right off. And see this thing? This steers it."

I was going 70 miles an hour and got stopped by a cop who said, "Do you know the speed limit is 55 miles per hour?" "Yes, officer, but I wasn't going to be out that long..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/30/18 5:24pm David D:

Yes, trying to be polite, I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/30/18 5:27pm David D:

Steven Wright has had a good take on just about everything.
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 5:30pm northguineahills:

It's never a wrong time to play the Pixies!
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 5:32pm Parq:

David, no I'm not sure of it at all. I'm just reporting what's on Wikipedia. en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 5:32pm northguineahills:

@Dean: "I spilled spot remover on my dog. Now he's gone"
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 5:33pm Parq:

Apparently, you really want to stay the hell off the road in Iran or the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 5:34pm Parq:

"You can't have everything. Where would you put it?"
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 5:35pm northguineahills:

@Parq: I wouldn't worry, I'm sure Dr. Congo will fix you up in no time if you were in an accident in Kinshasa.
  Tue. 1/30/18 5:35pm Dean:

My kids adore the SW joke about naming his dog Stay. "Come here, Stay."
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 5:43pm hilmar:

Salüt everyone, i missed the subway to the subway...(beata bocek is great, sounds like iva bittova...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/30/18 5:44pm David D:

Okay, thanks Dean - everyone drive safely everywhere!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/30/18 5:46pm David D:

Hey Hilmar -welcome to the subway on the subway!
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 5:47pm northguineahills:

Clever sense of humor your kids have, Dean.....
  Tue. 1/30/18 5:53pm Dean:

Thanks, ngh. Gotta keep 'em on their toes.
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 5:55pm Sem:

This has been a relaxing interlude in a busy day. Thanks, David. See you and all next time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/30/18 5:56pm David D:

Thanks, Sem, have a good night!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/30/18 5:59pm Stanley:

Great set, this. I never tire of hearing Ali Farke Toure
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 6:00pm Parq:

I'm picturing Dean's dog (whose name is, let's say, Frankie) sitting and staring blankly as his kids call "Come here, Stay" and shriek with giggles.
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 6:00pm northguineahills:

Well, Stanley echoed what I was going to type....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/30/18 6:01pm David D:

Thanks Stanley - yes, hard to get enough!
  Tue. 1/30/18 6:02pm Dean:

Fortunately for poor it, we have no dog, but we do have a cat, and yes, the kids have tried to non-plus the cat with that Steven Wright joke. You can guess the ending.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/30/18 6:04pm David D:

Did the cat find it none too amusing?
  Tue. 1/30/18 6:04pm Dean:

The cat pretty much yawned.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/30/18 6:06pm David D:

Yes, anything else could lead to the revocation of its cat license.
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 6:06pm Parq:

Since the cat presumably stares blankly when they call it by its own name...
  Tue. 1/30/18 6:08pm Dean:

Depends on the time of day, i.e., feed bowl refresher or not. I've assigned it several names. It's given name is Wednesday, but of course there's the generic Kitty, which sounds like Kitchen (which expands to Kitchen Window), which sounds like Chicken (which expands to Chicken Window), and so forth.
  Tue. 1/30/18 6:09pm Dean:

*Its given name...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/30/18 6:10pm David D:

You need to use their secret cat names. Or so I've read.
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 6:13pm northguineahills:

I have no pets, but all of my neighbors' cats seem to know I'm the go-to-guy for belly rubs. So, when I walk out my front door, or get home and walk out of my car, I'm mobbed by cats. I'm not a cat person, but I like interacting w/ animals. (my wife has always called me a cat/dog guy)
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 6:16pm northguineahills:

Nice Dave Holland!
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 6:17pm northguineahills:

@Dean: It's theme song should be Cibo Matto's "Know Your Chicken".
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/30/18 6:23pm David D:

Every cat should have its own theme song.
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 6:33pm northguineahills:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/30/18 6:46pm David D:

That's right, NGH. Did I say something else (wouldn't be the first time)?
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 6:54pm northguineahills:

No, I just guessed it when you said near the same time when it finally came over on my phone.

I don't think I've heard Spanish pop sound like the French trying to sound British.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/30/18 6:54pm David D:

Yes that sums it up exactly!
Avatar Tue. 1/30/18 6:58pm northguineahills:

Thanks, David, good fun! nacht!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/30/18 7:00pm David D:

Thanks NGH and everyone!
