A live, improvised sound collage experiment, going back 28 years, weaving mesmerizing new soundscapes from found and collected materials right in the present moment.
Pop music, speeches, live phone calls and spontaneous monologues become ambient loopy layered threads riding the liminal spaces between waking and dreaming. [On hiatus.] (Visit homepage.)

Favoriting January 17, 2018: Not A Single Thing (Show #527/567) | Download full MP3

Dreamy, strange, scary, mysterious, memory-bending, often beautiful collage today, with surprise listener phone calls, all improvised spontaneously into existence, live from June 21, 2017. With a little bit of Joe Frank (r.i.p.), sadly joining my other radio idol, Negativland's Don Joyce.

(Missed last week's symphonic bombastic nutritional laugh-in? "New Whirled Symphony")

Welcome! Funny, Fred, you've been away, missed new ones, and now you're back for a familiar one.

And...Joe Frank.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm fred:

Yeah, I was at shows. Still kept these emails to remind me to hit archives if/when I have the time to do it (can't listen at work these days)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm listener james from westwood:

Used to sit in my parents' driveway in the early/mid-90s, after my commute, to hear the full Joe Frank eps on WFMU. I mean I'd be out there for a half-hour. Alan Watts, too.
Avatar 5:13pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I sat in the car for Joe Frank, Alan Watts, Frank O'Toole. I did hear Over the Edge in a car once. And once I drove up to the studio and rang the bell and Don Joyce let me in and I played on the air a bit with him and The Weatherman and Wobbly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm gloomsday:

this is very enjoyable so far, as always :)

Glad you enjoy. This has emerged as a favorite of mine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm fred:

"You can't bite your own teeth?" Alan Watts probably didn't remember kids at that time: my nephew did just that a couple of weeks ago (he's 7) and his parents were afraid he'd swallow it

True story from the machine learning front: a researcher was complaining that his neural network got poor results because of human error (the task was classifying electronic/analog electric/acoustic instruments). hello!
(...ehem)
Avatar 6:40pm Timeshift mossy lighthouse:

It is wonderful that KLERE did emerge the same year, but prior to, the release of a specific REM song! I personally feel that Michael would love your creations endlessly, or maybe hopefully already knows of them and listens!
Avatar 6:41pm Timeshift Kenzo:

Avatar 6:41pm Timeshift Rich in Washington:

an all KLERE streaming channel would be dreamy.
Avatar 6:41pm Timeshift Kenzo:

Avatar 6:41pm Timeshift fred:

Now is when I should shut down the computer and go to sleep. It's too hot for that, and the show's too good. I'll linger until the neighbors complain. It might take them a little longer to ID this as music coming from my apartment, hopefully
Avatar 6:42pm Timeshift pacific standard simon:

"There's actually nothing wrong with you."
Avatar 6:42pm Timeshift coelacanth0:

is that the "i believe" with both banjo and accordion that is one of the best rem songs, among many Great ones -from their possibly best album, ?
i shall click.
Avatar 6:42pm Timeshift Kenzo:

Sounds like the one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm listener james from westwood:

"Geez, Peter, it's a fucking requiem, what do you expect, a bubblegum K-Pop dance-off?"
Avatar 6:43pm Timeshift Rich in Washington:

@Kenzo: 975 (+) hours, looping. One would seldom ever hear anything repeating, except for the heavy meta shows.
Avatar 6:43pm Timeshift Rich in Washington:

I like that timeline/thumbnail show list. I don't think I've ever seen that before.
Avatar 6:43pm Timeshift Kenzo:

Rich: Until recently, that was the main page of the site, and was so going back to 1994
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm melinda:

This is lovely.
Avatar 6:44pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

As Bliss once said, these shows always seem to end on an optimistic note, no matter how scary the journey.
Avatar 6:44pm Timeshift fred:

@Rich: In the spirit of Georg Cantor, you can listen to a number of shows at once, start each at a different time, and it gets even more infinite
Avatar 6:45pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@melinda: Glad you like! Me too! I can hardly believe it exists.
Avatar 6:45pm Timeshift Kenzo:

@Rich: Oh man, that's my genre! Heavy meta.
Avatar 6:45pm Timeshift Kenzo:

Rare man behind the scenes behind the scenes moment: I'm operating 39 faders during this moment of the show, not including all the shows within shows playing that themselves had me doing the same, spanning back to 2002 in this case
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm listener james from westwood:

Orton is loverly.
Avatar 6:45pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

We're getting so close.
Avatar 6:46pm Timeshift Rand al'Thor:

I've been listening to both last week's episode and "Other Shapes are Possible" a lot lately
Avatar 6:46pm Timeshift Rand al'Thor:

Jeez, that's a lot of faders.
Avatar 6:46pm Timeshift Kenzo:

Last week's episode ("Your Turn to Be Happy") is really relistenable! lastever.org...
Avatar 6:47pm Timeshift melinda:

I loved 3-2-1 Contact.
Avatar 6:47pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...to comfort, or disturb? Nietzsche said (?) Art was better then Life...then went batshit mute insane to prove it...
Avatar 6:47pm Timeshift Kenzo:

There's a lot of 3-2-1 Contact in "Children's Television Voteshop", a popular favorite: lastever.org... ...
Avatar 6:47pm Timeshift melinda:

I like this Proof combo.
Avatar 6:48pm Timeshift fred:

Winamp isn't fancy, but it's lightweight and, more importantly, works. No wonder you like it, Kenzo, it's close to your design signature
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Rich in Washington:

Only 9 minutes left. Oh, hell!
Avatar 6:48pm Timeshift Kenzo:

Does anyone appreciate the obsessively completeish playlist with well timed accu times and titles in the live player? This is hard hard hard work
Avatar 6:48pm northguineahills:

One should never focus on temporality....
Avatar 6:48pm Timeshift Rand al'Thor:

I appreciate the hard work. Thank you, Ken.
Avatar 6:48pm Timeshift melinda:

I appreciate it.
Avatar 6:49pm Timeshift Kenzo:

In 2014 I used an automated script that directly hooked from me hitting live samples into the KenzoDB playlist system. I haven't re-hooked that up yet
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Rich in Nowshiftington:

There's a classic Mammatus cloud formation happening where I'm at right now. Now, not back then.
Avatar 6:49pm Carmichael:

So how did the avatar get absconded?
Avatar 6:49pm Timeshift melinda:

this is lovely
Avatar 6:49pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Jinx yourself, melinda!
Avatar 6:49pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I can't even believe any of this exists. I have to watch the videos and listen 15 times in a row and I believe it for a vanishing moment here and there
Avatar 6:50pm david_:

Gorgeous stuff
Avatar 6:50pm Timeshift pacific standard simon:

I confess that I look at the playlist less often than you would wish. I recognize a great deal, though.
Avatar 6:50pm Timeshift Rand al'Thor:

Then I'm gonna listen to this from the start, hear what I missed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Rich in Nowshiftington:

I'm listening both on my work computer and on my phone's bluetooth headset and they're timeshifted apart from each other.
Avatar 6:50pm Timeshift mossy lighthouse:

Yes! The playlist is basically like you are listening to an orchestral performance and transcribing the notes and dynamics for multiple instruments into something that is more open ended than music notation. It is another part of the shows! : )
Avatar 6:50pm Timeshift geezerette:

It's a dream state.
Avatar 6:50pm Timeshift Rich in Washington:

I appreciate accurately timed playlist, both as an obsessive radio listener and compulsive radio creator.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Rich in Nowshiftington:

This is lovely. So good.
Avatar 6:51pm Timeshift Rich in Washington:

Nothing more difficult than documenting layered sound.
Avatar 6:51pm Timeshift pacific standard simon:

Most people process climax in less time than that...
Avatar 6:51pm Timeshift listener james from westwood:

What doesn't get documented ends up as an Easter egg for the attentive listener!

Thanks, Kenzo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Rich in Nowshiftington:

I feel slightly less like that now.
Avatar 6:51pm Timeshift Kenzo:

If you haven't emailed me to say hello, please do! ken at lastever.org. And please click the star icon in the upper left corner and also to the right of this episode title, so I remember you were here!
Avatar 6:51pm Timeshift Kenzo:

@Rich: The archive links are ALREADY up. You can backwards and be in your next now.
Avatar 6:51pm Timeshift Rand al'Thor:

Thank you for the show, Kenzo.
Avatar 6:52pm Timeshift melinda:

I haven't had a date since the advent of smartphones.
Avatar 6:52pm Timeshift fred:

Thanks Kenzo. It hurts to leave when Gary is about to start his great show, but I have to sleep at some point. And catch the start of Olivia's show. It's worth checking out
Avatar 6:52pm Timeshift Rand al'Thor:

I've never been on a date.
Avatar 6:52pm Timeshift Kenzo:

Thanks to all of you for being here. And for those who are quiet, those who called in, those who emailed, those who used the Facebook page...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Rich in Nowshiftington:

I listened to this last night, too, and swear it sounded different before it was timeshifted, but really, are we really the same person from one day to the next?
Avatar 6:53pm Timeshift melinda:

The odd assortment of familiar names in the playlist is boggling. Thanks for your transcription, Kenzo.
Avatar 6:53pm Timeshift Rich in Washington:

Don't feel bad. Smartphones seemed to have nullified most human interaction.
Avatar 6:53pm Timeshift Rich in Washington:

woah. That's abrupt. Like life. What will I do now/noxt?
Avatar 6:53pm Carmichael:

I'll listen to this again last year to hear any changes you might make before then.
Avatar 6:53pm Timeshift Rand al'Thor:

Until next time, everyone.
Avatar 6:54pm northguineahills:

danks for the aural love, Kenzo! Bliss out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Rich in Nowshiftington:

I still feel like that, but sadly, I am participating in the nullification more now than I did then.
Avatar 6:54pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@Carmichael: I will haven't going to did.
Avatar 6:54pm Timeshift Kenzo:

If you really want the transcript, you have to click all the "hear this other show" links within as well...!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Rich in Nowshiftington:

Wait! WHat abruptness is coming up that I reacted to then?
Avatar 6:55pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Rich tipped us off to the abrupt ending
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Rich in Nowshiftington:

But I wouldn't have remembered it. Thanks Timeshift Rich!
Avatar 6:56pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

(interlude, so we can decompress together and hugs and kisses and all the things we forgot to say before we died)
Avatar 6:57pm Timeshift mossy lighthouse:

I think the upcoming Wednesday shows will be very exciting; it has been a few years since you have been able to introduce shows that have only been heard once by most people from your archives during the show's broadcast space!
Avatar 6:57pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Thank you, everyone! I loved all of this. Backwards and tomorrow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Rich in Nowshiftington:

Thanks, Kenzo! That was beautiful!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm gloomsday:
