NO UPDATES.

Hello Jeff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 8:59am Jeff Golick:

No updates. Afternoon, @Brian in UK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:01am Uncle Michael:

Is "no updates" the new hopeful greeting?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:02am Jeff Golick:

Yes, I believe it is. Hiya, @UM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:02am Brian in UK:

The last track on the stream before changeover was something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:02am Uncle Michael:

No updates, Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:03am fred:

Good morning Jeff and those who stay in to head out

I like dates....and figs for that matter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:05am Uncle Michael:

It's apropos. Yesterday I migrated all three studio computers to the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update...mainly because the one that a) wouldn't let me defer it any longer, and b) melted down in the process, got sussed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:06am Uncle Michael:

Very well-put, Jeff.

Hear, hear.

Bienvenue, @fred.

'morning', @listener james.

FYI I am changing up the way I've been handling cover art here, and will be uploading after the show instead of grabbing random links during the show.

Just retweeted a heavy but needed thread about the acceptance of Dr. King by whites of later decades as long as he is the “safe King, the inoffensive King.” It quoted a stat that he had, at the time of his death, a 32% approval rating.
The top tweet in the thread: https://twitter.com/themattpoppe/status/952295088645902336
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:17am Uncle Michael:

I am not optimistic that human tribalism can be "fixed." Evolutionarily speaking, it was a feature, not a bug. Societally, it's proving a bitch to move past.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:18am Jeff Golick:

Good thread, @ljfw; thanks for sharing that. I've been to the Lorraine Hotel museum; it is a heavy place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:21am Brian in UK:

Nothing changes. What I find pathetic is when people apologise; sniveling cowards.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:23am Jeff Golick:

I hear you, @UM. I think a lot of the difficulty in choosing empathy/commonality over antipathy/your-side-sucks-ism is a feeling of limited resources, a sense that one barely has enough, is at risk of "losing" -- this is pretty much the main vibe of late capitalism.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:23am fred:

@james: good thread indeed. There was a militant side to Dr King that is often conveniently forgotten, especially about poverty
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:24am listener james from westwood:

It was striking to see the color photo. So much of that era, even as late as '68, is made up of black-and-white news photos and coverage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:24am duke:

Good morning all
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:25am listener james from westwood:

We're at a point where asking "Cui bono?"—"Who benefits?"—on these attitudes and the inequities they fuel is less option than duty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:25am Andrew Waterloo:

Good morning
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:27am Jeff Golick:

What is up, @duke! Greetings, Andrew Waterloo! Welcome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:27am fred:

@Jeff: "a feeling of limited resources, a sense that one barely has enough, is at risk of losing" isn't a bug or a feature, it's the OS of capitalism (for the low 99%, that is)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:27am Jeff Golick:

@fred: yes, King's Poor People's Movement was a much harder sell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:29am Uncle Michael:

I fear that our little lizard brains are wired to define commonality in the most facile and (increasingly) most toxic way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:30am Uncle Michael:

But, we also evolved the capacity to reason, and it's our only means of becoming more...reasonable...than our terrified, tribal selves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:31am Uncle Michael:

And make no mistake, in my book, the more tribal your behavior, the more cowardly I believe you are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:32am Uncle Michael:

I'm constantly asking myself of gun-toting, racist, "patriots," what are they so fucking scared of?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:33am Jeff Golick:

That fear is palpable, and real, @UM. I don't rightly know, but think at base the answer is in the vicinity of "existential dread."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:38am Brian in UK:

Whilst we have devisive leaders people will never be able to talk in a rational and friendly manner. The best way to resolve differences is by starting to talk to each other. We will find we have more in common than we realised.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:39am Jeff Golick:

@Brian: re the UKIP story, how does one "suspend" the girlfriend?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:40am Brian in UK:

I had a pair of existential trousers once. Could not get them to fit properly.

Jeff she is a party member so open the door and kick her arse out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:41am Uncle Michael:

I think we have a fear-based community and a hope-based community and the fear-based are in power.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:41am Uncle Michael:

And being led by their best and brightest, I might add.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:43am Brian in UK:

It comes back to a needy, thin-skinned man at the top but he did not invent racism. He sure knows how to keep the fire stoked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:45am Jeff Golick:

Yah. Good on the UK for demonstrating such a lack of enthusiasm for the guy that he cancelled his trip over.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:50am Brian in UK:

Jeff, even then to invoke the playground mentality, how the building could have been sold for more etc. Always ready to criticise others in his own country and make himself look better. Not a team player. SAD.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 9:52am Andrew Waterloo:

Hi, @Andrew! I see you there.

Good morning, @doctorjazz.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 10:12am fred:

I saw a dance show based on A Love Supreme this week
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 10:13am Jeff Golick:

How was that, @fred?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 10:18am fred:

Pretty good: each of the four dancers was related to an instrument, but that was only blatant for solo parts. It was not having a dancer mimicking the part; for instance, when the sax part was most melodic, all dancers tended to do the same thing. It was more about the musical structure than individual parts
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 10:19am sberger:

Good morning all from chilly Oakland, CA. Wonderful to tune in and listen to all of this uplifting, beautiful music and read some highly intelligent, thoughtful comments. Nice place to be on a Sunday morn.

@sberger: Welcome and good morning to you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 10:23am Jeff Golick:

@fred: sounds interesting. I've found dance to be the one artform that I have a hard time getting into. Too body-focused for me, probably. (I am from New England, after all.)
Avatar Sun. 1/14/18 10:23am glenn:

highly intelligent, thoughtful comments? huh.

you can't have read too many of mine, that's for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 10:29am fred:

@glenn: Trump does have a point about "other" countries sending their scum to the US though: Canada did get rid of Ted Cruz
Avatar Sun. 1/14/18 10:32am glenn:

yep. but then again, ted went to texas, and most of the time, texas might as well be on another planet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 10:35am fred:

@glenn: wishful thinking
Avatar Sun. 1/14/18 10:36am glenn:

i wonder if anybody thought to ask trump "why exactly would any norwegian, who already has probably the best standard of living in the world, who has universal healthcare, free university tuition, a social safety net without compare, very few guntoting lunatics, WANT to emigrate to the u.s.a.? what possible benefit could there be for that person?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 10:39am listener james from westwood:

Uniting those within Texas who are finally disgusted with the extremes of the right would be a good task for the Dems right now. Grassroots groups are doing it, but I distrust the DNC's ability to fan these flames rather than co-opting and neutering them while trying to appeal to older white leftish folks.

@glenn: There's no asking him for nuance. He's a spoiled bigot with no object permanence who's daily reliving his 1980s heyday in a bubble of sycophants.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 10:41am Jeff Golick:

  Sun. 1/14/18 10:46am Dean:

For a countervailing perspective, I refer all to James Fallows' series of posts at The Atlantic about goings-on across America at the local level. Not everything betokens the apocalypse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 10:48am Jeff Golick:

Hi, @Dean. Thanks for that. (But tell it to Hawaii.)
  Sun. 1/14/18 10:48am Dean:

One morning my 6YO (then 5 or 4, it's been a while) awoke and announced, "Daddy, I had a dream," to which I replied, "Yeah, you and Dr. Martin Luther King." My son thought that was hilarious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 10:48am fred:

@james: I can't imagine why someone would want to relive to 80s. Maybe because I was in high school at the time
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 10:49am doctorjazz:

Ahhh, Hemphill's expansion of the WSQ, great stuff!
  Sun. 1/14/18 10:50am Listener Gregory:

Jeff, do you know the Max Roach Quartet's mash-up of the "I have a dream" speech and Roach's "It's Time"? That's a great MLK tribute (on the album Chattahoochee Red).
Avatar Sun. 1/14/18 10:50am glenn:

in my opinion, america as a whole will survive trump, and be better off for having suffered this crap. i can't see the republicans making it out unscathed.

Same in Oregon, or Portland, at least.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 11:11am Jeff Golick:

The answer is in your question, @glenn. Rhymes with "shmersey."

@fred: that is indeed unsurprising. There's no way these people would preside over such a change.
  Sun. 1/14/18 11:12am Dean:

Wouldn't it be cool if you couldn't pump your own gas, but could pump somebody else's?

  Sun. 1/14/18 11:35am Dean:

A blur not due to artificial alteration of consciousness, but to the fact that my attendance was always at the tail end of a long trip that started with Victo. But I do remember having a beer at a "bar" in the basement of a church with Peter Brotzmann.

No noise like Euro noise, @fred.

@Brian: the question I asked myself is, would I choose to make less money so that my wife would make more -- assuming there's these only so much to go around. Parity would mean we all meet in the middle (of course, bringing women's salaries up to men's would be the ideal).

We have really screwed up, not only have we not eliminated poverty we now have stress as well.

Jeff, thanks for the show. In case of emergency retrieve bottle opener and put it to use.

Not much to tell. I said something insightful like, "I really like your music," and he nodded graciously.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 11:55am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @Brian.

@Jeff: I don't think that's the right way to frame the issue. From what I've seen firsthand, women are not paid less because "there's only so much to go around" but because "we can get away with it". Also a lot of BS about women's abilities, but I think it comes second to the getting-away-with-it factor

@fred aka boys club.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 11:59am Jeff Golick:

@fred: that may be so. And I generally agree. But I think change means we all have to deal with a certain level of discomfort, and possible "giving something up" in the short term.

Thanks, Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 1/14/18 12:01pm fred:

Thanks for the show Jeff. And sign me up for discomfort if it helps level the field
  Sun. 1/14/18 12:03pm Dean:

They/we get away with it due to legacy expectations, e.g., BS about abilities and about the physical and intellectual rigors demanded by job X. The something we give up might be our chains.

(I'm wearing my "fascist media pigs" WFMU t-shirt.)

Thanks, @ljfw1 @fred! @Dean! Love it. See y'all next time.
