Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 1/3/18 3:08pm Hoboken Jack:

Hey Irwin, Ron, Stevel, Ken, Bronwyn in advance! Happy new year! I'm back in Hoboken where some would say I belong.
  Wed. 1/3/18 3:09pm Dean:

Hollie Cook has a nice cover of that Rachel Sweet tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 1/3/18 3:10pm rrg:

Good day and HNY, Jack. Stay indoors where we all belong, at least for now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 1/3/18 3:11pm Parq:

I heard there was an alternate take of that song that made it about a "love that dare not speak its name." It was called "Ode to Bill and Joe."
  Wed. 1/3/18 3:11pm Laura L:

Is that a standard-form Terrifying Graph 1 to be filled in by the Top Secret user or did you receive it from your Top Secret connections and redact sensitive information for circulation to your listeners?

Now that Irwin's posted it, there's nothing to stop us from using that handy form anytime we need it. What was he thinking?
  Wed. 1/3/18 3:19pm Dean:

Kapt. Kopter sounds suspiciously like Led Zeppelin...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 1/3/18 3:20pm Irwin:

Dean: Someone should sue!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 1/3/18 3:20pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@Hoboken Jack - Happy New Year! You'll also feel at home in Hoboken, Alabama or Georgia, or possibly the one in Belgium, too.
  Wed. 1/3/18 3:28pm berbo:

Wouldn't that last one make him Hoboken Jaques?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 1/3/18 3:29pm rrg:

Winter Weather Advisory. This radio station needs to tell us about it. It's the law.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 1/3/18 3:29pm Hoboken Jack:

Sacre bleu! Maybe I'll start w/ Georgia.
Avatar Wed. 1/3/18 3:30pm Jack:

Back when albums were $5, I bought that Kaptain Kopter album for $13. I felt like I got ripped off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 1/3/18 3:34pm zopa:

I blame the French.
  Wed. 1/3/18 3:35pm Dean:

"Back when albums were $5..." IIRC, my first day at work at a record store in Southern California, early '78, was the day the store (a small chain) increased its regular one LP album price from $2.99 to $3.99. My first chore was to relabel the inventory.

Can that be right? A 33% increase overnight?
  Wed. 1/3/18 3:36pm Dean:

Or let's say you're hungry, and you stumble into a vacant home with three bowls of porridge on the table. The first one is too hot, the second is too cold. Should you try the third? What about taking a nap in one of the three beds?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 1/3/18 3:37pm rrg:

Could be. In the 1960s comic books jumped overnight from 10 cents to 12 cents (20%), and then from 12 to 15 (25%), and then from 15 to 20 (33%).
Avatar Wed. 1/3/18 3:37pm glenn:

why not? the price of gas probably went up 6 or 7 times pvernight. same raw material.
  Wed. 1/3/18 3:39pm Dean:

At the time, I believe the MSRP for LPs was closer to five bucks, but the chain was competing with another, more well known chain at the time, as well as a number of department stores with record departments, hence the discount.
Avatar Wed. 1/3/18 3:40pm glenn:

okay, maybe not 6 or 7 times, but probably at least a 60% increase.
Avatar Wed. 1/3/18 3:40pm Jack:

When comics went from a dime to 12 cents, it fucked my life up so bad, I'm still haven't recovered.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 1/3/18 3:40pm rrg:

I never worked in a record store but I sometimes went into them. In the early 1970s the groovy record store in my town had two prices for single-LP albums: $3.77 and $4.44. Depending on, I don't know, the label or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 1/3/18 3:42pm crateslinger:

They probably were losing money at $2.99 but were going for market share, then BAM!
Avatar Wed. 1/3/18 3:43pm Jack:

I got Blue Cheer, Temptations, Beach Boy albums and others in the discount bins for under a dollar.
  Wed. 1/3/18 3:43pm gekko hopman:

Bonjour from Rouen, Normandy, France. AWESOME PLAYLIST!
  Wed. 1/3/18 3:44pm Dean:

Yeah, the bargain label classical stuff (which I adored) generally ran $1.99, even post price-hike. But imports--mostly prog--imposed heftier demands.
Avatar Wed. 1/3/18 3:44pm Jack:

And root beer was a nickel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 1/3/18 3:45pm rrg:

Bubble-gum packs, with cards in them, also a nickel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 1/3/18 3:45pm Hoboken Jack:

The Spires have a Courtney Barnett feel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 1/3/18 3:45pm rrg:

And s penny for a piece of Bazooka Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 1/3/18 3:46pm rrg:

Not Joel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 1/3/18 3:46pm Ken From Hyde Park:

This one from The Spires is quite catchy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 1/3/18 3:46pm Irwin:

The Spires are like Courtney Barnett without Courtney Barnett.
  Wed. 1/3/18 3:48pm Dean:

I've heard the same said of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 1/3/18 3:50pm Hoboken Jack:

Did not know till quite recently that the Professor is Rockwood of the Music Hall. He should record again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 1/3/18 3:52pm Irwin:

Yep, Ken's a great guy. And he really was a prof at some college, but I forget where. Very sartorially elegant, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 1/3/18 4:01pm Irwin:

Wow, did I just kill the comments thread?
  Wed. 1/3/18 4:05pm Dean:

No. Had something to do at the top of the hour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 1/3/18 4:05pm crateslinger:

I'm doing estimates. Still here.

Michael Jeffery, Hendrix's manager, co-hosted an episode of The Music Factory one week in 1968 when Tom Wilson was away.

In 2009 a roadie for the Animals (whom Jeffery also managed) published a book in which he claimed that Jeffery murdered Hendrix--literally--for financial reasons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 1/3/18 5:46pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@rrg: Jeffrey claimed to be former MI5 - Brit equivalent of CIA - & is characterized as shunning exposure - so that's interesting!
