Greetings, all! Today's edition of guess-the-LP-underneath-the cassettes should be an easy one. |

Greets, left coast Tony, from Atlantic shore-bound ears. Hey, βrian, ljfw. |

![]() Happy Tuesday, Tony. I'm a bad guesser but a willing listener. |

![]() 2018, already better. Hiya, Tony & Tonyettes. |

Tony Coulter:
Hey, Rich! Wuz just going to say: The cassette on now is the one on the left, with the Basil Wolverton freakout fellow. |
![]() |
![]() Basil's from my hometown Vancouver Washington. That there isn't a Lena Hyena statue on Main Street in his honor is a disgrace. |
![]() Hi Tony, Happy New Year!
![]() |
![]() I mean, there's a Willie Nelson mural in town, commemorating the couple of years he was a radio DJ on Vancouver radio, but no love for Basil. |
![]() |
Tue. 1/2/18 12:11pm
Tony Coulter:
@ Rich: Wow! Didn't know Wolverton was from Vancouver! That should make you swell with civic pride. |
![]() |
![]() This is great. An early example of someone collecting those wonderfully trashy garage singles. |

Greetings, Tiago!! |
![]() |
![]() Wolverton is great. |
![]() |
![]() It does. Also, Monte, his son, also lives in nearby Battle Ground Washington, and he's also an illustrator, painter, sculptor. He's a syndicated editorial cartoonist. |

This side of this tape features lots of songs about bugs. The second side has lots of Japanese stuff. |

No guesses re today's LP jacket? Yvang was gentlemanly enough to recuse himself, but that doesn't mean everyone else should abstain. |

Can't help wondering how many of the tracks I'm playing today are in heavy rotation on the Ichiban stream. |

![]() i am surprised I can't find the butterfly cover via google search... |
![]() |
![]() I found the BtVotD image though: www.moviestillsdb.com... |
![]() |
![]() Well done, @steveo. |
![]() |
Tue. 1/2/18 12:32pm
Tony Coulter:
Yes, well done, Steveo. The "Butterfly Cover" LP is a common dollar bin item to this day, despite the fact that it came out 50 years ago. The artistes are very toothy and have high-pitched , tremulous voices. |
![]() |
![]() well done, Google, really. their reverse image search is pretty good. |
![]() |
![]() I'm sort of fascinated by that actor on the left, ID'd as Stan Ross on that movie still page. Memorable face. I see he played "weirdo in the schoolyard" on a Welcome Back, Kotter episode, per IMDB, which seems about right. |
![]() |
![]() that's fun/funny jeff |
![]() |
![]() Every household needs those Kogar the Swinging Ape compiled Lux and Ivy's Favorites compilations. |
![]() |
![]() i did finally find the butterfly's identity , by taking a screen shot of the uncovered rectangle where the head, antenna and part of the wings are, and feeding that to google. I won't give it away, though, because that's cheating. |
![]() |
![]() This is a great comp! |

Plenty o' fun on this comp, lovin' it. |
![]() |
![]() Ok, found that butterfly, though @steveo's method didn't work for me. I did the brute force method of scrolling through this extensive RYM list: rateyourmusic.com... (Yes, I am at work. Why do you ask?) |
![]() |
![]() Haha. Good detective work. |
![]() |
![]() I apologize for mispelling "antennae". And "misspelling". |
Tue. 1/2/18 12:57pm
Dean:
Wow, @Jeff G. One of the album covers depicted there is Solution's Cordon Bleu, a not half bad jazzy/proggy/poppy record on Elton John's Rocket label.

Tony Coulter:
Hey, Dean! |
![]() |
Tue. 1/2/18 12:58pm
Tony Coulter:
If no one IDs the cover in the next 5 minutes, I will let the butterfly out of the bag. |
![]() |
![]() I hope it's a mesh bag, at least. |
![]() |
![]() I like the twangy portion of this tape. |
Tue. 1/2/18 1:01pm
Dean:
I think Jeff ID'd it. Bee Gees' comp, no? My son spent the week up through Christmas Eve in PDX, @Tony. Got stranded on the tarmac at PDX for a few hours due to snow. For the first half hour or so he was mighty frustrated, then he realized what fun it was to watch heavy snowfall for the first time.

Tony Coulter:
Yes ... today's mystery LP is ... The Bee Gees: "Rare, Precious & Beautiful" www.discogs.com... |
![]() |
![]() Ahem: "Pressed By – Monarch Record Mfg. Co." |

Tue. 1/2/18 1:06pm
Tony Coulter:
Monarch Butterly?! |
![]() |
![]() Heya, @Dean. That Solution cover was designed by Hipgnosis, I see. |
![]() |
![]() Not a monarch, Tony, according to Jeff's page: "One of the best lepidoptera covers IMO showing a Chimaera birdwing (Ornithoptera chimaera) from Indonesia. Definitely rare, precious and beautiful." |
![]() |

Hmm -- the track two tunes back ("Do the Snackypoo" or whatever he was saying), was left off the tape's tracklist. So, I don't know who it was.... |
Tue. 1/2/18 1:30pm
Dean:
Right, @Jeff G. I'd forgotten. Foolishly, I unloaded my Solution records many years ago. Wish I'd retained them...

Tony Coulter:
The song on now is from the soundtrack for that all-time cinematic epic "The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies." |
![]() |
![]() Wow. That got issued on 45. It was credited to REL Recording Company. |
![]() |
Tue. 1/2/18 1:36pm
Tony Coulter:
I really like that film, actually. |
![]() |
![]() Tuesday-yay. Happy New One Tony |
![]() |
![]() Me too. I'd loved to have seen one of the live participation screenings, where director/star Ray Dennis Steckler (aka Cash Flagg) would emerge from the shadows and seemingly off the screen to menace audience members. |
![]() |
![]() Life can be so strange(love): "The title was originally going to be The Incredibly Strange Creature: Or Why I stopped Living and Became a Mixed-up Zombie, but Columbia Pictures threatened writer/director/star Ray Dennis Steckler with a massive lawsuit, thinking that the title was too similar to their upcoming Stanley Kubrick film, Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964). Steckler was amazed that Columbia would feel so threatened by his little $38,000 film. He phoned the studio to straighten things out, but couldn't make any progress until he demanded that Kubrick get on the line. Then Steckler simply suggested the new title - Kubrick accepted, and the whole thing was dropped." |

![]() There's also a documentary called "How I learned to overcome my fear and Love Ariel Sharon" that I am pretty sure Kubrick didn't lawsuited. I love these japanese Suki sukies. |

Tony Coulter:
Apologies to all Ungauans for mispronouncing "Ungaua." It's misspelled on the Wowsville cassette, which threw me off. |
![]() |
![]() That's OK. It's a 90s cassette. There wasn't an internet to A: check things out and B: no one had the ability to immediately give one grief over spelling, grammar, etc.. |
![]() |
![]() Remember before the internet? Where we just did stuff and no one could immediately tell us we were wrong? |
![]() |
Tue. 1/2/18 2:20pm
northguineahills:
Thanks for the proper pronunciation of Moog! |
![]() |
![]() Or am I wrong..? |
![]() |
![]() Rich: "..?" is not a proper punctuational construct. Hope that helps. |
![]() |
Tue. 1/2/18 2:26pm
Tony Coulter:
I worked for an NPR station for a few years, and the rule there was, never admit you don't know how to pronounce something -- just make up a pronunciation and stick with it, no matter what. |
![]() |
![]() @steveo: Thank you! I was getting lost in the pre-internet world and feeling uncomfortable! |
Tue. 1/2/18 2:26pm
Dean:
Also, Rich, strictly speaking I think you mean "before the Web" or "before the rise of social networks," but otherwise you're right, mostly.

![]() I kinda love this cassette. I suppose I'm a bit weird. |
Tue. 1/2/18 2:28pm
Dean:
Then I hope, Tony, you pronounced it "Notional Pubic Radio" and stuck to it.
![]() |
![]() My pleasure, Rich. Tony, this may be the most anodyne use of a Moog imaginable! LOL at/with Dean. |
![]() |
![]() Melvoin played keyboards on Tom Waits' Nighthawks At The Diner (sorry for my hard title casing. It's what is deemed correct on Discogs.com). |
