Greetings, all! Today's edition of guess-the-LP-underneath-the cassettes should be an easy one.
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 12:02pm βrian:

Just popped above zero F on the isthmus. That's a slight relief.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/2/18 12:02pm listener james from westwood:

Good Tuesday and happy 2018, Tony and all!
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 12:03pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, hey, hey, Listener J and βrian! Happy 2018 to yerz too!

Greets, left coast Tony, from Atlantic shore-bound ears. Hey, βrian, ljfw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 12:03pm steveo:

Happy Tuesday, Tony. I'm a bad guesser but a willing listener.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 12:04pm Jeff Golick:

2018, already better. Hiya, Tony & Tonyettes.
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 12:04pm Yvang:

hIYA! Happy peanut butter and 2018!
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 12:05pm Yvang:

For the first time I know what the LP is, but I won't tell.
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 12:07pm Tony Coulter:

Hola hey hello, Sem, Steveo, Jeff G, & Yvang!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 12:08pm Rich in Washington:

Love that Wolverton art on the cover.
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 12:09pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Rich! Wuz just going to say: The cassette on now is the one on the left, with the Basil Wolverton freakout fellow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 12:09pm Rich in Washington:

Basil's from my hometown Vancouver Washington. That there isn't a Lena Hyena statue on Main Street in his honor is a disgrace.
Tue. 1/2/18 12:10pm Tiago from Portugal:

Hi Tony, Happy New Year!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 12:11pm Rich in Washington:

I mean, there's a Willie Nelson mural in town, commemorating the couple of years he was a radio DJ on Vancouver radio, but no love for Basil.
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 12:11pm Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: Wow! Didn't know Wolverton was from Vancouver! That should make you swell with civic pride.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 12:11pm Rich in Washington:

This is great. An early example of someone collecting those wonderfully trashy garage singles.
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 12:11pm Tony Coulter:

Greetings, Tiago!!
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 12:12pm Yvang:

Wolverton is great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 12:12pm Rich in Washington:

It does.
Also, Monte, his son, also lives in nearby Battle Ground Washington, and he's also an illustrator, painter, sculptor. He's a syndicated editorial cartoonist.
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 12:15pm Tony Coulter:

This side of this tape features lots of songs about bugs. The second side has lots of Japanese stuff.
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 12:18pm Tony Coulter:

No guesses re today's LP jacket? Yvang was gentlemanly enough to recuse himself, but that doesn't mean everyone else should abstain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/2/18 12:20pm listener james from westwood:

This was used to good effect in Hairspray.
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 12:21pm Tony Coulter:

Can't help wondering how many of the tracks I'm playing today are in heavy rotation on the Ichiban stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 12:23pm Jeff Golick:

All (I think) I recognize is a still from Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, in the middle (?).
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 12:24pm Tony Coulter:

Yeah, I think you could be right -- looks familiar to me too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/2/18 12:25pm listener james from westwood:

LOL, this does have all the makings of a Rex set!
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 12:26pm Yvang:

Not Iron Butterfly, not Talk Talk, not House of Love...
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 12:26pm Tony Coulter:

@ Listener James: I know, I feel like I'm turning into someone else -- maybe even a fly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 12:28pm Sem:

Duckduckgo's best guess is Valley of the Dolls.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 12:28pm steveo:

i am surprised I can't find the butterfly cover via google search...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 12:29pm steveo:

I found the BtVotD image though: www.moviestillsdb.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 12:30pm Jeff Golick:

Well done, @steveo.
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 12:32pm Tony Coulter:

Yes, well done, Steveo. The "Butterfly Cover" LP is a common dollar bin item to this day, despite the fact that it came out 50 years ago. The artistes are very toothy and have high-pitched , tremulous voices.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 12:34pm steveo:

well done, Google, really. their reverse image search is pretty good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 12:37pm Jeff Golick:

I'm sort of fascinated by that actor on the left, ID'd as Stan Ross on that movie still page. Memorable face. I see he played "weirdo in the schoolyard" on a Welcome Back, Kotter episode, per IMDB, which seems about right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 12:38pm steveo:

that's fun/funny jeff
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 12:39pm Rich in Washington:

Every household needs those Kogar the Swinging Ape compiled Lux and Ivy's Favorites compilations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 12:40pm steveo:

i did finally find the butterfly's identity , by taking a screen shot of the uncovered rectangle where the head, antenna and part of the wings are, and feeding that to google. I won't give it away, though, because that's cheating.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 12:42pm Rich in Washington:

This is a great comp!

The Moons where also known as The Sounds of Lane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 12:51pm Sem:

Plenty o' fun on this comp, lovin' it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 12:54pm Jeff Golick:

Ok, found that butterfly, though @steveo's method didn't work for me. I did the brute force method of scrolling through this extensive RYM list: rateyourmusic.com...

(Yes, I am at work. Why do you ask?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 12:54pm steveo:

Haha. Good detective work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 12:57pm steveo:

I apologize for mispelling "antennae". And "misspelling".
  Tue. 1/2/18 12:57pm Dean:

Wow, @Jeff G. One of the album covers depicted there is Solution's Cordon Bleu, a not half bad jazzy/proggy/poppy record on Elton John's Rocket label.
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 12:57pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Dean!
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 12:58pm Tony Coulter:

If no one IDs the cover in the next 5 minutes, I will let the butterfly out of the bag.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 12:58pm steveo:

I hope it's a mesh bag, at least.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 1:00pm steveo:

I like the twangy portion of this tape.
  Tue. 1/2/18 1:01pm Dean:

I think Jeff ID'd it. Bee Gees' comp, no?

My son spent the week up through Christmas Eve in PDX, @Tony. Got stranded on the tarmac at PDX for a few hours due to snow. For the first half hour or so he was mighty frustrated, then he realized what fun it was to watch heavy snowfall for the first time.
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 1:02pm Tony Coulter:

Yes ... today's mystery LP is ... The Bee Gees: "Rare, Precious & Beautiful" www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 1:06pm Jeff Golick:

Ahem: "Pressed By – Monarch Record Mfg. Co."
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 1:06pm Tony Coulter:

Monarch Butterly?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 1:10pm Jeff Golick:

Heya, @Dean. That Solution cover was designed by Hipgnosis, I see.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 1:16pm steveo:

Not a monarch, Tony, according to Jeff's page: "One of the best lepidoptera covers IMO showing a Chimaera birdwing (Ornithoptera chimaera) from Indonesia. Definitely rare, precious and beautiful."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 1:19pm Jeff Golick:

Great tape.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/2/18 1:22pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Tony and all
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 1:22pm Tony Coulter:

Greets, coelacanth∅!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 1:24pm Jeff Golick:

Donna Loren was Mrs. Lenny Waronker, I've learned.
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 1:26pm Tony Coulter:

Hmm -- the track two tunes back ("Do the Snackypoo" or whatever he was saying), was left off the tape's tracklist. So, I don't know who it was....
  Tue. 1/2/18 1:30pm Dean:

Right, @Jeff G. I'd forgotten. Foolishly, I unloaded my Solution records many years ago. Wish I'd retained them...
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 1:31pm Tony Coulter:

The song on now is from the soundtrack for that all-time cinematic epic "The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 1:34pm Rich in Washington:

Wow. That got issued on 45. It was credited to REL Recording Company.
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 1:36pm Tony Coulter:

I really like that film, actually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 1:40pm Stanley:

Tuesday-yay.
Happy New One Tony
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 1:40pm Rich in Washington:

Me too. I'd loved to have seen one of the live participation screenings, where director/star Ray Dennis Steckler (aka Cash Flagg) would emerge from the shadows and seemingly off the screen to menace audience members.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 1:41pm Jeff Golick:

Life can be so strange(love): "The title was originally going to be The Incredibly Strange Creature: Or Why I stopped Living and Became a Mixed-up Zombie, but Columbia Pictures threatened writer/director/star Ray Dennis Steckler with a massive lawsuit, thinking that the title was too similar to their upcoming Stanley Kubrick film, Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964). Steckler was amazed that Columbia would feel so threatened by his little $38,000 film. He phoned the studio to straighten things out, but couldn't make any progress until he demanded that Kubrick get on the line. Then Steckler simply suggested the new title - Kubrick accepted, and the whole thing was dropped."
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 1:41pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Stanley! Happy Newness to you too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 1:45pm Jeff Golick:

Sorry to be Johnny-Facts-A-Lot today. Just discovered that Sheila B. had Donna Loren on her show last September: wfmu.org...

What I don't know could fill the internet.
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 1:48pm Tony Coulter:

Interesting! Will have to check that later....
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 1:49pm Tony Coulter:

For one thing, I want to learn if anyone really ever did do the Zonk.
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 1:52pm Yvang:

There's also a documentary called "How I learned to overcome my fear and Love Ariel Sharon" that I am pretty sure Kubrick didn't lawsuited. I love these japanese Suki sukies.

Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 2:16pm Tony Coulter:

Apologies to all Ungauans for mispronouncing "Ungaua." It's misspelled on the Wowsville cassette, which threw me off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 2:19pm Rich in Washington:

That's OK. It's a 90s cassette. There wasn't an internet to A: check things out and B: no one had the ability to immediately give one grief over spelling, grammar, etc..
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 2:19pm Rich in Washington:

Remember before the internet? Where we just did stuff and no one could immediately tell us we were wrong?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 2:20pm northguineahills:

Thanks for the proper pronunciation of Moog!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 2:20pm Rich in Washington:

Or am I wrong..?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 2:25pm steveo:

Rich: "..?" is not a proper punctuational construct. Hope that helps.
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 2:26pm Tony Coulter:

I worked for an NPR station for a few years, and the rule there was, never admit you don't know how to pronounce something -- just make up a pronunciation and stick with it, no matter what.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 2:26pm Rich in Washington:

@steveo: Thank you! I was getting lost in the pre-internet world and feeling uncomfortable!
  Tue. 1/2/18 2:26pm Dean:

Also, Rich, strictly speaking I think you mean "before the Web" or "before the rise of social networks," but otherwise you're right, mostly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 2:28pm Rich in Washington:

I kinda love this cassette. I suppose I'm a bit weird.
  Tue. 1/2/18 2:28pm Dean:

Then I hope, Tony, you pronounced it "Notional Pubic Radio" and stuck to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 2:29pm steveo:

My pleasure, Rich. Tony, this may be the most anodyne use of a Moog imaginable! LOL at/with Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 2:30pm Rich in Washington:

Melvoin played keyboards on Tom Waits' Nighthawks At The Diner (sorry for my hard title casing. It's what is deemed correct on Discogs.com).
Avatar Tue. 1/2/18 2:30pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, VP! Glad you and Stanley are both digging this tape. Found it in a Seattle thrift store recently for 19 cents

@ TC - I call that a bargain...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/2/18 2:32pm Rich in Washington:

I like how the bass Moog track and guitar are panned hard right and left, respectively. No one takes full advantage of stereo separation anymore.
