Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:01pm Jeff Ash:

Season's greetings from Green Bay, Larry!
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:02pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Jeff!
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:02pm Jeff Ash:

Seeing Darlene Love sing this live a couple of years ago in Milwaukee was tremendous!
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:03pm Funky16Corners:

Yeah, what a voice!
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:07pm Parq:

Ass-kicking opener. (Okay, technically, Darlene was the opener, but still.)
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:07pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Parq!
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:08pm Parq:

The Darlene is an old favorite but the Mavis/Blind cut is a revelation.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:09pm Funky16Corners:

Yeah, one of my favorite Christmas songs from the gospel tradition
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:11pm Funky16Corners:

Mavis Staples recordings, 40 years apart
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:16pm Funky16Corners:

This is various and sundry Turtles, Gram Parsons and Linda Ronstadt (among others)
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:20pm Parq:

I bought an album almost 15 years ago with the Monkees version of "Christmas is My", and never heard the Turtles Etc. version until this year, and now I've heard it twice.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:21pm Funky16Corners:

It's a great 45. I'll play the other side later in the show
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:23pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Larry and all
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:23pm JtotheK:

hi F16C, hi everyone.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:23pm Parq:

Oh man, I just *love* this Honey and the Bees.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:24pm Funky16Corners:

Hey C, J!
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:24pm Funky16Corners:

@Parq, a great Christmas record that's also a great soul record
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:24pm JtotheK:

@Jeff Ash -- green bay, huh? are there still record shows there are few times a year - and if so, are they decent for soul 45s?
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:27pm Jeff Ash:

We have two record shows, in the spring and the fall. Not many soul records turn up here.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:28pm coelacanth∅:

I was out of the room...is that "merry christmas baby" the Charles Brown song?
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:28pm northguineahills:

2017 has been the worst, and possibly one of the best years of my life. I have optimism personally, and limited optimism worldly.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:28pm Uncle Michael:

I'm heading to bed, but I wanted to pop into the comments to wish you happy holidays, Larry.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:31pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Unk!
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:31pm JtotheK:

thanks for the info, jeff.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:31pm Funky16Corners:

Hey NGH, I feel you. This year has been unrelenting. Hard to stay positive, but stay positive we must
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:32pm northguineahills:

UM, you're back a few time zones, yet, you go to sleep early some nights (and others are out as late as I am).
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:33pm Uncle Michael:

I'm one time zone away and I crash anywhere from 9:30 to 11:00...but I start heading that way earlier. I also keep the usic playing.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:34pm Funky16Corners:

If I wasn't on the air I'd be relaxing in bed, too
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:34pm still b/p:

So McKean and Lander of Credibility Gap became....Lenny and Squiggy. That familiar odd story & journey....people with a presumably sharp satirical sense shift over to the worst lowbrow whitebread kind of entertainment. Yes, I know McKean went on to other smarter material later.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:35pm Funky16Corners:

I hope Lenny and Squiggy fattened their bank accounts
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:36pm Uncle Michael:

The Lenny & the Squigtones album had a long life in the cutout bins.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:37pm Funky16Corners:

Featuring a young Nigel Tufnel?
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:38pm Uncle Michael:

In his teddy boy period.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:38pm northguineahills:

Surprisingly G rated for Clarence Carter!
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:40pm Funky16Corners:

Not if you have a dirty enough mind!
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:40pm JtotheK:

@NGH, yeah - for some reason "strokin" never took off as a holiday airplay tune...
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:40pm Jeff Ash:

Amen, brother. "Back Door Santa" is filthy.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:40pm Funky16Corners:

I'll be there's a spicy live version out there somewhere
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:41pm JtotheK:

i have a treacherous 3 holiday 45, recommended.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:41pm Jeff Ash:

Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:41pm Funky16Corners:

I'll have to look for that!
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:41pm Jeff Ash:

"Christmas In Hollis" has become a classic over the last 30 years.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:42pm Funky16Corners:

It certainly has. I still remember the video
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:42pm Uncle Michael:

ok, I'm outta here...
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:43pm Funky16Corners:

Nite UM!
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:49pm coelacanth∅:

back door Santa is pretty thinly veiled, even by Clarence's standards.
...my 2 possibly favorite Clarence Carter songs are both rated g. (road of love; I'd rather go blind)
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:49pm coelacanth∅:

night UM
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:49pm Funky16Corners:

Clarence is underrated
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:51pm DJ Pat K:

Testify!! Great show tonight!
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:51pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks Pat!
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 10:52pm coelacanth∅:

not in my world. i've done my little bit to help - in the pub, via jukebox.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:00pm Funky16Corners:

Then you are doing good work!
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:06pm Funky16Corners:

That's no brownie! That's the Attorney General!!
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:11pm still b/p:

Oh, we listened to this Allan Sherman when it was newish. The Japanese transistor radio is the only listed gift I actually remembered though.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:11pm Funky16Corners:

I love Allan Sherman.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:13pm Funky16Corners:

My 4th Grade teacher Mrs Teller used to play his records for us
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:13pm still b/p:

Last week I watched a clip of him doing a medley of his stuff with Dean Martin and Vic Damone.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:15pm Funky16Corners:

He was hilarious, especially so if you grew up around Jewish people. You get a lot more of the jokes.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:20pm still b/p:

In a different version of the path I was talking about earlier, the suits wanted him to go for broader appeal and be less....ethnic.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:21pm Funky16Corners:

That's a shame. His NY/Jewish flavor was one of the reasons he was so good. His medley of Irish songs turned Jewish is one of the best things he ever did (Switching out HARRIGAN for HOROWITZ)
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:26pm Jeff Ash:

Satchmo. Yesssssssss.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:27pm Parq:

Larry, you are KILLING it! What a great mix of my faves (you shoulda seen me drunkenly tagging key words to the Stan Frieberg track) and stuff I don't know. If Mrs. Funky 16 and the kiddums ever head to the inlaws and leave you behind, you are *so* welcome at our house for Christmas. You would fit *right* in.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:27pm Funky16Corners:

I love the way he does this
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:28pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks Parq! High praise indeed!
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:28pm still b/p:

If Thurl Ravenscroft hadn't been available for that iconic rendition of You're a Mean One, Mister Grinch, it's fun to imagine a Louis take on it.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:28pm Funky16Corners:

Louis gets extra credit for saying DONDER and not DONNER!
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:29pm Parq:

It's worth adding that I *had* one of those Japanese transistor radios. One of the best Christmas presents I've had in my whole sexagenarian life.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:29pm Funky16Corners:

I wonder if there are other recordings of the Grinch out there that predate the TV special?
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:30pm Parq:

Oh, Still, I'm going to be up all night imagining that.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:30pm Funky16Corners:

I was recently regaling my son with tales of my multi-band portable radio that I got as a gift when I was 10 or 11. HUGELY important to my musical development
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:31pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:32pm northguineahills:

Thanks for this Satchmo!
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:32pm Parq:

Larry, there's an extra on the Grinch DVD in which Thurl explains that he showed up to do the job on the "Welcome Christmas" session and then the composer approached him and asked him to try his hand at another song he wrote for the production The rest, as they say, is --- well, you know.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:33pm Funky16Corners:

Thurl is such a part of our childhood, but I'd bet most people never heard his name.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:33pm Funky16Corners:

Tony the Tiger!
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:34pm Parq:

Speaking of Thurl, for those of you who don't know about it:

Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:34pm still b/p:

A photo line-up of every transistor radio I owned as a kid would be great. One was the Sunoco gas pump model, which a friend gave me for a birthday (11th?), and he discourteously told me before presenting it, like it was a grudging sacrifice he'd made, "I paid four bucks for it."
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:34pm Funky16Corners:

@NGH - My Pleasure!
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:36pm Funky16Corners:

SBP - In our house we have the legend of my Pop's Montgomery Ward model that got left on the dashboard one hot, summer day. The back of teh case melted over the insides, yet it continued to work for years
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:44pm coelacanth∅:

Santa somebody apparently put a little transistor radio in each of our stockings when I was maybe 7-8. that was big. I remember doing a lot more walking around with no destination after that, just to walk around with that radio.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:44pm Jeff Ash:

Touching all the bases tonight! John Fahey. Sweet.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:45pm Funky16Corners:

This is a great album
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:45pm Funky16Corners:

@C - Kids today (cough, cough...) have no idea how important those things were
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:46pm northguineahills:

John Fahey (jumps an awkward happy dance). I have Fahey xmas albums, but not this one, Yes, happy laddy am I. Going to hit the hay after midnight, thanks LD and all of our fine folks! (uggh, I sound like I live in the South)
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:47pm Funky16Corners:

Fahey was such a brilliant guitarist, and almost as troubled as he was gifted
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:48pm northguineahills:

In one of Christian Marclay's Xmas parties (where DJ Olive was a guest), I saw Christian scratch up (in a good way) a Fahey Xmas record. It was a good night.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:49pm northguineahills:

Yeah, Fahey is finger pickin' good!
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:49pm coelacanth∅:

Larry @11.45 ugh, don't get me started! (take liberties adding an accent to that)
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:50pm Funky16Corners:

Did you read his biography?
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:51pm northguineahills:

(which [fahey] one?)
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:51pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:52pm Funky16Corners:

Yes, Fahey
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:53pm northguineahills:

Crap, most of my books are still boxed.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:54pm Funky16Corners:

It was interesting, and well written, but so much of his later life was an utter disaster that it was a little painful to read
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:55pm still b/p:

Make the day after Christmas unBoxing Day.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:57pm Funky16Corners:

Good idea!
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:57pm JtotheK:

thanks for the tunes, Larry - all the best to you and yours! i hope to be around for your fill in tomorrow, cheers everyone!
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:57pm coelacanth∅:

at the pub, about a month ago already, somehow the charlie brown christmas special came on, instead of the usual horribleness. i hadn't seen that in years, and it was a huge thing in our household. others were enjoying it too.
then someone (a friend) who's always sneaking behind the bar to change the station to some sports thing, did that -right at the climax near the end, and people started yelling! fucking funny! I got right up and grabbed the remote to change it back, but nobody knew what station it was on. so we missed the end.

Night J!
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:58pm Funky16Corners:

@C - That is a good story. I hope he wasn't beaten too badly by the crowd.
Avatar Wed. 12/20/17 11:58pm Funky16Corners:

@Dean - Thanks, that's the one
Avatar Thu. 12/21/17 12:00am coelacanth∅:
