MAX_CALI; shite, cheers to this elkhorn. Jeff were you at this show?
  12:10am

I’ve been told “Cali” is not the preffered nomenclature
  12:12am
ohbears:

Whoever told you that doesn't know what nomenclature means ;p
Avatar 12:12am

It's actually just what people say when they don't want to sound tired they have to get up at 4 am. To afford the price of "Cali".
Avatar 12:12am
Jeff Conklin:

I was at the gig.. I "DJd" and by "DJ'd" I mean I played live Dead jams off my laptop
  12:13am
ohbears:

the lack of apostrophe the second go round threw me for a loop there
  12:13am

When a DJ plays Dead jams, do people start twirling?

or vis versace, whatever, I'm tired and Cali is awesome.
Avatar 12:14am
Jeff Conklin:

When I play Dead someone hangs around trying to guess the date. And they never do.
  12:16am
ohbears:

if you did phish I would totally guess that
  12:17am
zenkoan:

That reminds me, Jeff--I've been meaning to ask: how did someone of your relatively tender age first develop an appreciation for the Dead that grew into the degree of expertise you now have? If you don 't mind my asking. : )
Avatar 12:22am
Jeff Conklin:

Hmm, well I'm getting dangerously close to 40 but thanks for assuming I'm tender ;). I loved 'Touch of Grey' when I was kid. In middle school found my dad's records and he set up a stereo for me in the basement and I listened to Skull & Roses a lot. Couple years later at lacrosse camp the cool older guys had Dead stickers on their helmets and asked my dad what Dead album was good, he took me to the record store and I bought American Beauty on tape. That summer I also discovered marijuana and Black Sabbath and soon thereafter a friend lent me Live/Dead and then some live tapes. Kept trading tapes through college and so on and so forth...

Avatar 12:26am

@ohbears: No shame. Still hold my school's record for most saves in a game/season :P
Avatar 12:26am
blankemon:

Lacrosse camp is not surprising if one grows up on the north shore of nassau county....and in my high school, the lax dudes were among the first deadheads I knew
  12:27am
ohbears:

:D :D that's rad
Avatar 12:27am
AdamFromOldeKenzo:

I was all about protestant bible camp when I was a teen, managed to blow some doje there...lacrosse camp would have been more fun though, imo
Avatar 12:29am
blankemon:

I never did play lacrosse, but I did go to summer camp up in the Adirondacks with a whole lotta Deadhead counselors. That was probably my introduction.

  12:33am
Jeff Conklin:

Franny. I don’t get you. But that’s ok. Glad yr here.
  12:34am
zenkoan:

Almost 40 sounds pretty damn tender for such a Dead authority as yourself. Let's just say all the others I've run into--the kind that actually are able to accurately identify the dates of the live shows from a quick listen to the tapes--had more than a touch of grey!
  12:35am
ohbears:

There was an age(d) hipster that both Jeff and I knew on the Internet who both had excellent taste in music and thought Sonic Youth was for "aging hipsters" when he was 24 years old(8 years ago?). I think he likes Sonic Youth.

So I got all my friends into them and found out they were playing MSG (Fall of 1993). My "friend" had his mom "score" us tickets. The night before the show this "friend" calls and says he "had to sell my ticket" to some other kid. I had no idea what the scene was like and that you could just roll up (plus I was 14) so I didn't go. To this day, this "friend" tries to add me on Facebook and I refuse to accept.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56am

Saw them several times after, but my favorite sorta Dead related story(sorta) is seeing the Dream Syndicate at CB's in '84, walking in just as they were opening their set. With Morning Dew. Freaked me out, and I'm standing there gibbering to the folks I'm with "Hey they're covering the Dead!!! and I'm just getting blank stares, and worse. Later I went back stage and found out that Steve Wynn was/is a big Dead fan.

Great comments tonight. Glad I got to see the Dead many times in the 80's. I don't think their live sound has ever been matched. I would;dn't say I have seen as many shows as some of you here but none of them could match the Dead and their clarity.
